Why is nobody mad at May?

Ott has been doing his thing in this league for what, 6 years? 7? No fighters with May's rep have ever goaded Ott into agreeing to a fight yet, please explain how you think the deal would have "went down right" and May not recieved a 2-5-10? May's only course of action would have been to grab Ott and start punching - something Eric Carins, Jody Shelley and Chris Neil did in the past - but not in close games that mattered.

I've got Aaron Downey in mind. The second that Ott would have tried to fight Stuart, Downey would have jumped on the next shift and put him on notice. And that's more than May did. I don't know if/why you have a boner for May, but he's been pretty useless IMO.

Downey was for the most part pretty good at not taking stupid penalties, I doubt he would have jumped Ott either. How do you "put a guy on notice" when the game is close and your team needs points? What we saw yesterday was an example of why there tends to be less fighting in the playoffs. while fighting and enforcing are important parts of the game, they are not cure alls and there is not room for them in every situation. I would have been mighty pissed if May took an instigator penalty in that game.

Again, write Babs and let him know that you think May should have attacked Ott. Maybe next time Babs will tell him to. He could have given that order - or at least suggested it, but we have no reason to believe that he did. The fact that May is in today suggests that he didn't directly disobey an order from Babs.

LOL - "put him on notice". Is that like when Perry threatened Pavs?

Did you notice that Cleary was put on that line in place of May? I don't know what the reason was, but I've got a feeling that it was because he hasn't been effective in his role.

If May's role is enforcing, and he isn't doing it, We would be looking for an enforcer. we aren't looking for an enforcer.

Cleary was in because Cleary is significantly more lkikely to create offence than May is. 2 points are up for grabs.

If May takes a bad penalty and costs us the game, he'll never play. It amuses me when people get mad at our tough guys. Should May have done something? Yes. Do you think he wanted too? Yepp. Do you think if he takes a 2, 5 and a 10 that Babs wont bench him next game? Of course he will, that's how Mike is. May's done a fine job, I honestly think that Downey was more physical, but May is alot smarter and better behind the net.

I thought his last two performances were kinda weak.

I actually agreed with most of your posts in this thread. I wish May would have been able to do something but that is the instigator rule having the effect they intended. The post above however is incredibly flawed logic. Basically what you come down to is May must be doing his job because we aren't looking for an enforcer? In the first place you have no idea what Kenny and Co. are shopping around for as the trade deadline gets nearer. In the second place, whether Kenny is or is not looking for an enforcer does not necessarily mean May is or is not fulfilling his role. It is a bad assumption that you then act as if its a fact.

Josh Harding just took matters into his own hands with Ott in the Minny-Dallas game tonight. Gave him a couple punches to his ugly face with his glove and blocker still on! Then a Minnesota player jumped in when Ott started returning the favor. That's some good hockey right there and that's how you deal with that bastard. I'd love to see Ericsson treat Ott like he was Corey Perry and bash his douchey face in until he gets syphilis in the eye.

Ott is a knuckle dragging buffoon. I wish our knuckle dragger would have knocked the stupid look off his face.

Ott is a pretty good player, and plays a smart game.

Was that point we got for staying diciplined not worth it to you? It was worth it to me. There will be plenty of chances to get at Ott - we needed that point.

There is no way Ott is ever going to fight May.

We should be mad at Bertuzzi, it looked like Ott wanted to go with him, but nothing ever came of it. When is Bert going to scrap? He should have stepped up today, and gone for the Gordie Howe hat trick.

Does anyone ever expect Bert to go again? I don't.

May does more than Leino does out there.

Lets not get carried away. May really does do very little albeit slightly more than Downey did. He's not a liability, but he's pretty damn close as far as skating and playing hockey goes. That's not to say he shouldn't dress for some games. However, I agree if he isn't enforcing at every opportunity, then he shouldn't be playing.

So in other words, he does one more thing out there than Leino can do?

I am afraid May will be gone when everyone is healthy... to keep Miller Wngs have to let someone who was on the opening day roster go. Leino has another year on his contract. LIke last year Wings won't need a tough guy for the playoffs.... need someone who can offer more than a one dimensional game... someone like Miller.... who can play on any line and in any situation. And Abby wasn't on the opening day roster.... so he will down in Grand Rapids also when everyone is back. At any rate Wings will have depth... which is good ..... because they will not be able to acquire anyone at the trade deadline, unless of course someone else is traded away.

lol... Well, I'm not exactly a Leino fan either, but I do think he is a better player on both ends of the ice. Minus any sense of toughness of course.

The Leino fascination here still hasn't ended? He has no business in the NHL, period. Lets end this science experiment of mixing potions to create a superstar. Also, May provides one thing Leino doesn't; beyond goalscoring, plus/minus, points, or even fights. ENTERTAINMENT, and last I checked that's what fans expect when they spend their hard earned money.

First off, Aaron Downey was useless to this team -- that's why he never played, that's why he's no longer here. Why you would want to bring a far more useless player than May here I have no idea, but maybe that logic coincides with the ridiculous notion that beating someone's ass for being a pest and getting the team into penalty trouble is a viable solution. Secondly, yes, micah has a boner for May, and really this is proof in the pudding that enforcers don't prevent jack s***, but you suggesting that we should bring in Downey is really laughable. I can think of a good handful of grinders or skill players who would easily replace May but it is what it is, May has not been worthless, and only an idiot would think that a player jumping to fight someone being physical in a hockey game would somehow solve anything other than testing the opposing team's power play ability.

To be fair, I have a boner for Downey too.

Also, Mike Babcock does not agree with you that enforcers "don't prevent jack s***". You should have your mom help you type up a resume, I bet the Wings would be happy to get someone with a better understanding of the game behind the bench.

I've said this to simpletons before and I don't mind repeating it. Enforcers are like seatbelts or motorcycle helmets. Smart people use them because they prevent some injuries. They do not prevent all injuries. Only a fool would say "I know people who still got hurt in an accident even though they had a seatbelt on, therefor seatbelts do not prevent injury and it is stupid to wear one."

Babs gets it. Some here aren't so quick as Babs.

I'm assuming you mean May and fighting are the entertainment, and I won't argue fighting is entertaining. However, there's a point where hockey and entertainment conflict. At the point where fights take precedence over the game going on and is a constant interruption to it, that's where the conflict occurs, since I'm sure people swinging hockey sticks and being utterly brutal to one another is entertaining too, but pointless to the bottom line of winning and losing in a hockey game. If you were to say the Wings are boring because they can't put the puck in the damn net, there's an obvious notion there which I cannot argue with. The Devils, for example, won their championships with empty seats because they played a horrendously defensive-oriented and boring game. They were always in the middle of the pack if not amongst the leaders in fighting, a lot like the Ducks, and that obviously wasn't enough to draw fans. What's clear is the real draw of entertainment is 1. scoring and having superstars, and 2. winning. Those also coincide with the bottom line of a hockey game, which is winning. Fighting does not, which is why, while it is indeed entertaining, it is not that important over most other aspects of the game.

To be fair, I have a boner for Downey too.

Regardless of who says it -- Babs, you, God, Allah, Spaghetti Monster, if something isn't true it isn't true no matter who says it. Of course, the only reason you are pointing this out is because Babs said something you agree with -- I'm sure you wouldn't be quoting Wing players who said otherwise. Pointing him out does not make your argument stronger nor does it erase what just happened with an enforcer not stopping what people were suggesting is "running at opposing team's players" -- and it never did, as iterated countless times. Logically, a statement of this nature of prevention is true when it, in some consistent fashion (not some lame vague ass "some" which is an admission of lack of prevention if anything), actually prevents something. What did it prevent here? Nothing. May could have even fought Ott and it would have only prevented him for 5 minutes from being Ott, then it would have went right back to the same thing again. Of course, being a slappy religious nut about fighting above all else in hockey makes you try and rationalize nonsense like the above.

I'll always be his fan, just from this...

It was cool and entertaining and I'd be lying if I didn't say I enjoyed that, but what's the reason for being a fan of a player over that? Maybe if he did more than commit penalties I might be a fan too, and he might also still be a Wing.

Absolutely not the most important. Intrinsically vital and important though - yes indeed.
