I'm willing to bet this will be Lidstrom's last season. He probably wants to spend more time with his family. The older a guy gets the more he wants to spend time with his family usually, and he's already considered a hockey legend so I would think he wouldn't be disappointed with his career ending after this season. Just my thoughts on the matter. I think Homer will stick around Detroit for awhile longer though.

That's good that he made that known now, so that his future isn't as much of a distraction this year.

LeftWinger 5,153 Report post Posted January 21, 2010 Draper STILL has 1 more year on his contract. Homer for less than $1M... Maltby has to go Lids needs to hang em up, we need the cap space. (or sign for $2M and we know that wont happen)

(or sign for $2M and we know that wont happen) It looks like it could go either way,as far as Holmstrom goes. He's very effective when healthy, but the injuries are obviously becoming a problem. We need to get rid of Rafalski as well.he's nowhere near what he once was.he makes me wanna pull my hair out every single game. (or sign for $2M and we know that wont happen) Homer will be at least $1m; it's unrealistic to think otherwise. We'll probably see a front-loaded 2 year deal for him, around $3m: $2m next year, $1m the year after. Lids will probably re-sign for around $4-5m if he comes back (and I think he will; the team needs him), single-year deal. Maltby will probably retire, and Draper will probably retire after next year. Guest Howard He Do It?! Report post Posted January 22, 2010 I think Lidstrom takes a nice hometown discount and stays on for another year. Draper has another year, so he will stay. Homer will come back for another year and I think Maltby hangs them up. The Wings have a lot of young grinder type players that can slide in for Maltby. Lidstrom for life 20 Report post Posted January 22, 2010 Everyone seems to think that if Homer comes back he is going to take a big pay cut and I really don't understand why. He is leading the team in goals, why would we expect him to be willing to resign for less than half what he is making now? Draper will definately be back as he has one more year on his contract and he is still an effective player. Maltby is almost certainly done after this year. Lidstrom better come back, he may not be the player he was a few years ago but he is still great top 4 guy hopefully we can get him back for 1-2 years in the 4-5 million range. This year's injury was very freak. Damn you Lebda! Homer was looking very strong this season, his team lead in goals a testament to that.
gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted January 22, 2010 Draper's got a year left and he signed his deal after he turned 35 so we have his cap no matter what. He's going nowhere most likely. I think Maltby, Lidstrom and Holmstrom will likely sign up for one more year. Holmstrom might end it if the injuries continue to haunt him towards seasons end and/or if we were to win a Cup. As much as people dog on Maltby, he's a good guy to have around at his price point. I doubt he'll be a "first priority" guy and we might not have the money, but if we've got space available and spots open (more possible than some think...) he'll definitely get signed for $750k. Bottom line, I could see these guys all wanting to give it another year considering Osgood and Draper will still be around and the team will likely be as good (which I still think is GREAT down the stretch) or better next year. I do think it would mean something for that crew to go out together as they are the last of the '90's Wings.
TheOwl 77 Report post Posted January 22, 2010 Homer deserves what he's making, no point in gippin him an extra 1 mill/yr. I'd like to see Maltby and Draper retire together after next season, their good mentors to Helm and Abby. Lidstrom is a toss up. If he retires, we get 7.5 million in cap space. If he doesn't, we still have basically the same team together that won the Cup in 2008. Personally I hope he retires or takes a huge pay cut, that money could be spent on some much needed scoring. Would the team be better? Maybe not, but I don't think it would be any worse.
AtomicPunk 296 Report post Posted January 22, 2010 Have we been eliminated from the playoffs already? What's all this "next year" speculation? Last I checked there were guys playing a game tonight and trying to make the playoffs. Or is that not "fantasy" enough?
