Before this gets any further, you do know that ice hockey was invented by the English in England, right?
Yeah, and the first Americans were also originally from England (not counting native American's here). The human race was born in Africa. Gretzky's ancestors are probably Africans. He should've take the Cup there when he won it. Santa Claus is Finnish. Who cares?

I know that hockey was invented in England, but that doesn't mean in today's hockey.

I am absolutely loving your posts lately, for real.

And Leino's shootout move was not "full of fail," it was a good move that didn't miss by much. It happens.

No, today's hockey wasn't invented in England. If you use the NHL as "today's hockey" it was technically invented in the United States.

If you define ice hockey as a game between two teams played on ice using skates, sticks curved at the end to form a blade, a puck or stone, and nets, then it was invented by the English in England. Rules, team sizes, etc. have varied over the years but the basics of the game have remained the same. If you want to go with the "today's version" argument, then Dr. James Naismith didn't invent today's basketball. The version his students played could either shoot or pass when they had the ball; they could not move their feet or dribble the ball. Fouls, scoring, etc. were also handled considerably differently. Look it up.

Origins of sport does not mean "the exact sport we play today by the exact rules" unless you want to say the origin is where the most recent rule change occurred for the most dominant body of that sport.

Actually I was under the impression that hockey was derived from bandy, which was definitely popular in England, but apparently there are records of bandy predecessors being played in early Russia as well. Although you can find records of playing a sport where you guide a ballish thing into a net with a stick all throughout the world dating back thousands of years.

Well, I guess Leino could be traded soon..

DETROIT NEWS: Chris McCosky reports not to be surprised if the Red Wings trade forward Ville Leino to get under the salary cap once the remainder of their injured players return, noting Leino at 26 hasn't reached the level of development expected of him plus if he were demoted he'd have to pass through waivers where another club might grab him.

Trade him? For what?

If we do get rid of him it will be via the waivers.

Who would be foolish enough to sign him? :D.

to get under the 23 man roster size Id imagine ... and dump a small bit of salary?

besides the way we scout players any pick is GOLD!!! :) trade for a pick? low low low pick...

Good point. If we do get rid of him it could be a mistake. He may be a late bloomer and who knows how he would preform in the future. He has the raw skill but is weak on the puck and needs to become more obliged to go into the corners and dig pucks out. It is actually a tricky decision for Wings Brass.

If he was putting up better numbers Im sure he'd stay.. but being on the hook for another year for 800,000 might not be such a good idea....seeing as how you dont wanna let Miller or Eaves go.. they make less and are contributing ALOT more than Leino.. Let him go....

I was hoping hed be better because he's one of the reasons we let Hudler walk cause he was spose to take up some slack...... well -10 is not picking anything up....

If he gets better in another system...then this one was not for him.

Miller works his butt off every shift and has shown flashes of skill. Ville who I have no doubt has more talent seems like he's really floating most nights. Which is a real shame with what we saw last season. I've been pulling for him, but its getting tougher.

Someone in a GDT the other day mentioned that maybe they were playing Leino more as well as putting him in the shoot-out early to try and promote him for a trade. That may have been a good assumption after reading that Spectors article.
