Injured wings coming back

So Lilja to GR for conditioning first I'm assuming? He can't be much better than Meech or Lebda having been out for almost a year now...

wrong... because of what he is - a big, stay at home d-man

I'd take a rusty Lils over Ledba any day of the week, especially because it affords Ericsson to play a more offensively d-man role...

You could probably send him down on a conditioning stint while the Olympics are on. I would rather see that then him come back before the Olympics and then take the break.

With Forsberg on the shelf for the Sweeds, I bet that they are waiting to see if Franzen will be ok. Personally, I would like him to take a 2 day conditioning stint during the olympic break. Still, if he comes back sooner I will be happy.

Yea, I'm sure the coaching staff will agree with you and put Lilja right back into the lineup after having not played a single NHL game in 12 months, totally plausible

And I wouldn't throw around that "Big" in reference to Lilja so offhandedly, he certainly doesn't play a big man's game.

http://www.freep.com/article/20100125/SPOR...-lineup-Tuesday

“It’s huge,†Dan Cleary said today. “Words can’t describe how important he is to our team.â€

Kronwall is a top-four defenseman who logs minutes in every situation, including quarterbacking the second power-play unit, makes bit hits and contributes offensively. In 21 games this season, Kronwall has five goals and eight assists and is plus-3.

"It’ll be nice to have Kronwall back,†coach Mike Babcock said. "We need a boost right now. It gives you a dynamic guy on the back end, whether that be physical, whether that be defending, whether that be in the rush offensively, whether that be on the power play, whether that be on the penalty kill."

If anything it seems like having Kronner back will provide at least a spark as it already has in the locker room.

Don't mean to be a downer here but how long will it takes these guys to get back into game shape and how many losses will the Wings rack up while they get up to speed?

A "still getting up to speed" Kronwall/Lilja is MUCH better than Meech. And a getting up to speed Williams/Holmstrom is better than Leino. So I expect an immediate impact.

btw, Lilja has been working out/skating and practicing with the team for quite some time, so he will be rusty, but it's not like he's been totally away from hockey for the last year.

My thoughts exactly. How good will the team look when a good portion of the players have recently returned from extended absence? I'm not too sure.

I posted this in the other thread.

Awesome just awesome!!

I really hope they don't trade Leino. I'd like to keep him around at least till next year.

I really see May being waived or sent down instead of Meech or Lenio like the MLive reports speculates.

I hope to God not.

bull - the SECOND he is back from a reconditioning stint and on the active roster, he will play over Meech or Lebda without a doubt...

cleared from doctors does not mean on active roster...

and Lilja most certainly plays a big mans game, he hits, blocks shots and clears guys out from in front of the net... AND he's a PK gem to boot...

Lilja hits? I know he was improving his game at the time of the injury...but that's news to me. Lilja is by no means a physical force.

you need to go back, re-watch some games and re-check your stats - he led the team in hits in 07 and was damn close last year too... (I think Datsyuk, then Stuart may have actually led last year) and may have finished atop last year too if not for the injury...

You don't have to be taking heads off and fighting every game to be a "physical force" - he clears guys out from in front of the net and ALWAYS takes the body - that wears people out and that IS being a "physical force"

You know who else led the team in hits? Kopecky. 'Nuff Said. Lilja is not Kronwall or Stuart.

no, not "nuff" said... once again, hitting does not mean laying someone out on every play... it's about wearing them down... which he does.

learn the game.

I'm not going to continue going back and forth. Lilja is not going to make an impact this season if he even plays at all (again, you're talking about a player who hasn't played a single game of hockey in nearly 12 months). You're giving him a ridiculous amount of credit for what amounted to half a respectable season in his entire career with the Red Wings.

this is the happiest day of my life.... this week.

but still, i was not expecting kronner back tomorrow, and I for sure didnt expect the lilja news

so the whole lilja thing was true then. it wasn't a mistake.

Im pumped that franzen might be back before the olympic break cause im going to the game on the weekend before the break against ottawa and i might get to see the mule out there.

well, we clearly don't see eye to eye on the quality of his play prior to his injury... as he had 2 solid years here before he went down with injury...

I'm not saying he will be a Norris candidate upon return, but within 4 weeks of playing time, he will be far more valuable than Lebda and a DAMN solid number 6 d-man...

honestly, i just read that article, and it said lebda was still paired with ericsson.... not good. we've seen the self distructive chemistry there. lilja will most definetly be an improvement on lebda in that pairing. I would like to see meech in instead of lebda, but i never see babcock doing that,

I think Meech has outplayed Lebda by leaps and bounds since the injuries(which doesn't say a whole lot) - Lebda needs to go and is our most glaring weakness...
