Worst Hockey Game Experience

The only thing I don't mind out of that is the swearing, even with children around. I'm a fairly vulgar person because I just like using those words, and I think people need to chill out and just accept them. They probably wouldn't even be a big deal if people just realized they're words (as long as they're not used in an obviously inappropriate sentence, if you catch my drift).

That's how every douchebag feels though - "I don't mind the classless things I like to do, it's all those other people who do those other classless things that drive me nuts..."

Using vulgar children in the presence of children, or even strangers, is offensive to many. As a parent who takes his kids to quite a few games, I ask you to please consider cleaning it up. Ask yourself, "what would Steve Yzerman do?"

And of course they're just words. I know. Getting drunk and loud and obnoxious in public (in and of itself) doesn't hurt anyone else. Booing the national anthem (anyone's national anthem) doesn't hurt anyone. Laughing at handicapped kids doesn't make their handicap worse. Still, there are things that people don't do when they're mindful of their suroundings and respectful of their neighbors. I ask you to be mindful of your suroundings and respectful of your neighbors. Thanks.

this is really funny too because i wish people would be more vulgar at wings games. I go to MSU games all the time and in the student section we swear and cuss at the other team all the time same with football and the other team's fans. My only protest to my argument is that wings games are more of a family atmosphere and not an adult audience. I clean it up for wings games but let it all out for State. I know in reality people are cleaner at the Joe and it will always be that way as much as i want to say f*** off to the other team's fans you just can't for everyone's sake. Its just respect for everyone younger than you and just to set an example for younger fans.

OP, why didn't you just move? There were plenty of other seats available..

Are you referring to the corporate seats that bigwigs don't take? Maybe the seats that were vacated when Detroit took a two goal lead with under five minutes left in order to beat the traffic getting home? Or do years have having 10,000 plus empty seats at the UC still live in your head?

This.

Time and place, people.

Sure, there's going to be swearing from the players on the ice, and yelling, "s***" or "f***" after either of the last 2 of the Yotes' goals last night would be perfectly understandable, but people who think that they can say anything at any time are just rude.

I don't know how many times I've been addressed as "*****" at the convenience store where I work, or been cussed at by customers because they couldn't find the "******* bathrooms in this ******* s***hole".

Why? What's the point? Do you have no other vocabulary? Are you that intellectually limited that you can't find any other words? I have no problem swearing around my friends who swear, and I keep it clean around my friends who don't. If you're at a game with kids or very old people, it's better to err on the side of caution and assume that some of those people don't wish to hear a constant stream of swear words.

The world would be a better place if people had more compassion and empathy. Rudeness is neither.

As to the topic- I've only had good experiences (only gone to Wild games as they are the closest), but even in my Wings gear, people have been great there.

I did want to kill the guys behind me at "Revenge of the Sith". I took my Godson, who is a SW freak, and the guys behind us had seen it before and spent the whole movie going, "Watch this! This is cool!" etc.

Fascinating sentiment, lad. 1) How can anyone condone leaving a game early. Except emergencies, obviously. 2) I bet the wings were a real hot ticket in "the d" during the dead wang era.

To each his own. I'm not trying to be rude. And I don't just swear for the hell of it. But I could see myself letting a few go at a hockey game in the spur of a moment (haven't yet). I guess I just like the Constitution over people's opinions....

I would have went to an usher. The little video before the game says you cannot be standing up all the time and that you cannot scream and yell constantly.

Same, I would have gone to the usher.

Edit: On second thought, I would have just moved.

Occasional swearing in times of elation or anger is understandable, and I'm glad that you don't go about randomly cussing at people.

I'm all for Freedom of Speech and the free exchange of ideas, but if it is not done in a civil manner, it becomes a mere shouting match and does nothing to promote whatever ideas are put forth.

The Constitution gives one the right. Wisdom gives one the right decision.

I agree. But maybe if we stop caring so much about swearing, d-bags won't feel so high and mighty when they use them obsessively? I dunno.

Micah, I know we have our disagreements about some issues but couldn't agree with you more on this issue. It is well stated and succinctly put, thanks for the insight and the opinion.

Why are people offended by "swear words"?

Who cares? Why do people still feel the need to constantly use them in public knowing many others are offended by them... if they are only words, surely it's no big deal to not use them, or to use an alternative word.

meh. its a hockey game. It is what it is. It ain't no disney movie.

I was at a griffins game last friday (college night) so you get in for $10 and its dollar beers. ITS COLLEGE NIGHT WITH DOLLAR BEERS. So they place gets crazy on college night. Us college kids love hockey and love dollar beer even more. I personally don't get belligerent at games but I do yell and get my thoughts out. Get some beers in me and I will do it more. As long as you aren't fighting with people and spilling s*** on them, its fine.

Well this last friday there was these two women in a row a few in front and to the left of me. She kept going to the usher and finally the usher came down and shes like "those ones right there! They are yelling!" The guys were yelling that the Toronto Marlies goalie sucked. I mean cmon. The usher proceeded to escort the guys out. These ladies continued to be the police and told the usher every little thing.

Is that the right thing to do? Don't go to a game on college night and expect it to be like Toy Story.

I have said it about the league and say it about fans. THIS IS HOCKEY. If you don't like it, watch some golf instead.

My worst experience would have to be last year. Went to the Flames/Wings game in October/November as I usually do, the group of guys around me and my friend were plastered and littering beer all over the whole section. We were just enjoying the game because up until the Halloween game this year I hadnt seen the Wings win in Calgary, and finally they were. But of course, the drunk idiots are still going wild and one of them bumps his beer on my head after I get up to celebrate the Wings scoring. Safe to say I didnt really like that, and neither did my buddy who's a bit of a hothead as he hit the guy almost as soon as he saw it. We fought with them until the ushers came along and broke it up and escorted us out. Not my main reason for hating Flames fans, but it certainly helps.

Not all bad though, there have been some funny moments. The halloween game this year getting "Nice Halloween Costume" anytime I'd be walking around because I was wearing my Howe jersey :D And in 08, year we won the Cup, early in the year at the Flames/Wings game, having this obnoxious guy behind me talking out of his ass and how he knows so much about hockey. He dropped a few gems: "Wings wont last, their goaltending is too weak", "Zetterberg is a poor defensive player", "Drake should've retired already" and my favorite "Lidstrom is great, but Phaneuf at this point in both careers is superior". Actually come to think about it, Flames fans arent even that bad, they provide quality entertainment

My worst experience was when I was 14 at a game in Chicago with my dad and grandpa. Wings won 5-0 and during the game several fights broke out around us. One guy told my 80 year old grandpa that if he stood up to cheer again, he'd push him over the edge of the upper level. The ushers did nothing to help out and I eventually had tail end of a beer poured on me. However, at the Winter Classic I had a totally different experience and the worst thing that happened was a few people talking s***.

wow, this is very rude i think.

i agree i cant stand young teens, lots of time it is guys going to hockey games (ihl- icehawks game couple months ago) and talking loudly to friends, or on the phone, not even paying attention to the game at all. very rude. half the time i feel like yelling at them to leave.

i was at the wings game new years eve, and there was a colorado fan in front of me, the whole game he was playing games on his ipod..

Self-proclaimed hockey town.

1. Perhaps you're unaware that people work in the morning. Getting a head start on the traffic, which leaving the Joe after a hockey game can be a nightmare, is not a bad idea.

2. I'm not sure what a "dead wang" era is. I'm aware of what the "Dead Wings" were, but if wangs are all Chicago fans can think about, then talk about it on your board.

3. As has been discussed several times, Hockeytown isn't referring to the city of Detroit, but rather the entire Detroit fan base. Why is it that Chicago can't singlehandedly sell out an opposing arena?

That's a new one, I've never heard that one before.

Worst for me was game three against the Flames in '04. It was the first game in Calgary since they beat Vancouver and the fans were obviously jacked (to this day I have never heard a louder crowd, and the reaction to Kiprusoff was literally deafening).

Anyway, this was the first year of the SportChek zone so people were extra rowdy. Just to illustrate, a guy behind me tells me Stevie is his idol but he was too scared to show his allegiance. As soon as I walk in, the entire section boos. Wings score first and I am pelted with garbage and beer, with expletives and threats flying. Flames tie it and this guy is literally screaming in my face to the point the ushers come to me and ask if I want them to step in but I decline. Flames end up winning of course.

It has gotten tamer and tamer to the point that most people don't even care anymore but that's Flames fans for you.
