Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 With May and Maltby gone... I believe that means we will have one spot on the player cap open at forward. So if we had the money, we could add someone. I still hope Lebda is moved. If even for a pick. Ima pray for Maxim for Brett and a pick.
Guest Howard He Do It?! Report post Posted February 12, 2010 (edited) I am afraid about this for one reason. It is too perfect. I think there will be an NHL investigation into the timing of this chornic shoulder issue. It has been a nagging injury since June and Maltby was told that he would need to have surgery in the off season even though he should have had it sooner. The pain has simply become too great to continue playing. That solves any investigation. Edited February 12, 2010 by Howard He Do It?!
Vladifan 680 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 Maltby seemed to be really energized lately too This to me is the frustrating part of all this. Not only do I love him to pieces, but he's been playing very well lately. He's been especially helpful on the PK. Bah. Humbug. Whatever...

Icesurfer 75 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 (edited) If Maltby decides on the surgery he could be back by May... if the Wing are still in the playoffs. Maltby on LTIR for the rest of the year gives the Wings cap relief not cap space. A player can take Maltby's place but his salary has to be 883,000 or less. Lilja's salary is 1.25 mil. I guess they can "designate" Lebda as the replacement for Maltby which would then make the Wings cap compliant once Lilja comes back but that gives the Wings ZERO cap space in case of other injuries... especially if it a short term injury to a goalie.... Wings then would have to waive someone. Wings will have only 12 forwards for the month of March. It looks like Meech will be playing forward position..... because you know there will be injuries!!!!! This is not good. Edited February 12, 2010 by Icesurfer
Icesurfer 75 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 May's + Lebda's salary = 1.15 mil ..... which is JUST above the EXACT number needed to clear for Lilja to come back.
Icesurfer 75 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 DON'T DISH MALTBY FOR PETE'S SAKE!!!! Maltby is taking one for team!!!! AND he provided the Wings will very very very valuable and indispensable service for a long time!
Guest Howard He Do It?! Report post Posted February 12, 2010 May's + Lebda's salary = 1.15 mil ..... which is JUST above the EXACT number needed to clear for Lilja to come back. Lilja has a listed cap hit of $1,250,000.
Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 (edited) Lilja has a listed cap hit of $1,250,000. Ok, but either way 500K (Brad May being waived) of that money is cleared. In the same article it says that the team only need to clear roughly 700K now. So Maltby going on LTIR would solve it by himself. EDIT: Also, I know Maltby has been rough for periods of time, but his play of late has been solid if you ask me. At the same time, this could be a blessing in disguise. Guest mindfly Report post Posted February 12, 2010 Isn't his contract over after this season.. so season-ending surgery and then too old/bad to get a new contract... last we've seen on maltby i take it?

RedFlag85 33 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 I fail to see the logic in this. We all seem to be making Lilja out to be our savior on Defense. He's not a good defenseman, and the only place he shines is on the PK. Take that last sentence and replace d-man with forward, and you've got Maltby. Why trade one sub-par player whoms decent on the PKer for another?

deetroit dario 27 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 Should have waived Lebda instead of May much as i want lebda gone, we can still get a pick for him. sure, its probably a guitar pick, but its still better than nothin'

Datsyerberger 279 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 (edited) Ouch, not really the way I'd want to see Malts go out, but given that he knows he's a spare forward at best, and if the surgery's important, it's probably the best option for both him and the Wings. However, he WOULD be back for the playoffs, provided the Wings make it, so he COULD go out on a high note in that case. Guest Howard He Do It?! Report post Posted February 12, 2010 How much cap space do the Wings have with May now gone and with Maltby still on the roster? In other words, what is the Wings' cap number right now at this very moment?

Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 That doesn't work. "An LTIR can be covered by replacement players, as long as the replacement salaries do not exceed the salary of the injured player. " Maltby's salary is $883,333. Ok, but unless I'm missing something here, Lilja is not a replacement for Maltby? They're two separate issues. There wouldn't be an article by Ansar Khan saying, "Red Wings' Kirk Maltby might need shoulder surgery, which would clear cap room for Andreas Lilja" unless it was a viable option. Guest Howard He Do It?! Report post Posted February 12, 2010 I think I have it figured out. The Wings currently have a 22 man roster. That includes May to waivers and Lilja still on LTIR. The Wings have $1,677,599 in cap space with the current roster. Bringing Lilja back from LTIR would reduce the cap number to $427,599. Now Lebda is on the outside looking in and has a salary of $650,000. Having him on the roster would put the Wings over the cap. Maltby going to LTIR would allow the Wings to field a replacement with a salary of less than $883,333. Lebda would fit in here. Tell me if anything is wrong. Lilja is replacing no one. Lebda would be replacing Maltby. Or whoever makes less than Maltby.
