king_malice 17 Report post Posted February 19, 2010 so long as he is also thinking a $2MM contract, if he doesn't then he will handcuff the Wings from getting ANYBODY of significance signed.... In other words he'll "Hasek" the Wings... I think the only reason he comes back is to take another run at the cup, knowing how tight the wings are to the cap this year and knowing he can help them out next season, at the chance to come back and make the run at another cup i can defintly see him taking a big pay cut in order to get back to the top. mmamolo 287 Report post Posted February 19, 2010 Wasn't that the talk before one of the last contracts though, because of his kids and school, etc... I think they're all pretty locked into the US with college, etc... I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up becoming a full time citizen, unless he does end up wanting to run for office in Sweden (don't laugh, the man is a genius and could very well become Prime Minister over there over time after some smaller offices first) Stevkrause I generally see eye-to-eye with you so I probably wont be making fun of you. It's not like your Carman or someone. Either way, I dont know how old his kids are but I feel like they're probably not in college yet. But ya you might be right - by now they may be locked in. Lidstrom for PM - he's got my vote f*** this. Every year that he stays on the team, he hinders Lebda's growth as a player. Retire already, Nick! That is the funniest thing I have ever read on this site - you may be my new favourite poster

stuck in socal 56 Report post Posted February 20, 2010 He could think it tomorrow though. It will really come down to how He feels the team is doing for the next couple of years. My bet is, if the Wings miss the playoffs and he sees them struggling for the next few years, he will retire.
clutchngrab 12 Report post Posted February 20, 2010 Lidstrom can play for the next couple years. Consider the calming prescence the guy has. He never panics. This team needs that influence during this transition period. ... Agreed, though I wonder if he is best suited to be captain during the upcoming transitional period. I think this team is missing a twenty-something potential leader to build off of.
clutchngrab 12 Report post Posted February 20, 2010 As sad as the day will be when he does retire that would really be amazing if that happened. Sadly, I sincerely doubt that he'd want that. There's always been talk of him wanting to go home to Sweden and all of that. That being said, I'm all for the idea. I think Lidstrom could become one of the best D coaches around Lidstrom doesn't strike me as the type who would need to hang around the NHL. I could see him coaching in Sweden, but having said that, his kids are all essentially North American's now.

Doc Holliday 1,888 Report post Posted February 20, 2010 Agreed, though I wonder if he is best suited to be captain during the upcoming transitional period. I think this team is missing a twenty-something potential leader to build off of. I don't see why not. He is the veteran and the only way he should lose his captaincy is if he is off the team. Nobody else on the team (save Osgood, Draper, and Malts who don't have even close to the same talent and affect on the team) has been through as much as he has with the Detroit Red Wings. He is the Captain till his nameplate is removed from his locker. Also considering everyone and their mothers knows that Zetterberg is being groomed for the part anyways it's not like the team is having questions who is going to lead them next. Unless there are other, younger, options that would be better suited for the position (personally I don't think Wings management is ready to step down from the "seniority" ideal considering the last time they had such a young captain the team was scraping lottery picks). king_malice 17 Report post Posted February 20, 2010 does his son play hockey? Lidstrom excited for son’s outdoor game EmailWritten by hockeynut on Jan-15-10 3:22pm From: 1hockeytownnation.info DETROIT – After this weekend, Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom won’t be the only member of his family to play in a highly-publicized outdoor hockey game. Lidstrom’s son Kevin, a sophomore defenseman on the junior varsity team at Novi Detroit Catholic Central High School, will play in the Outdoor Classic on Sunday, a four-game series at Clark Park in southwest Detroit. He will play in the first game of the day that pits Catholic Central against instate rival from Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood. The JV game will be followed by two alumni games, then the marquee varsity match-up at 2 p.m. EST. Lidstrom said his son is excited to participate in the event, and that Kevin can draw on the experience of watching his dad in the 2009 Winter Classic at Chicago’s Wrigley Field. “He went to Chicago when we played there last year,†Lidstrom said, “so he knows the atmosphere and feeling. They had practice over at the rink at Clark Park the other day, and I took him over to it. He’s looking forward to it.†The proud father said that his son is still learning how to play defense, after deciding to follow in his footsteps, instead of in Chris Osgood’s. “People say he’s similar to me,†Lidstrom said. “Kevin was a goalie for four years, so he’s still catching up with his footwork, but I think he’s getting better and better. He’s having a blast, and really enjoying it.†Lidstrom will be unable to attend the outdoor contest, since the Red Wings host the Chicago Blackhawks at 12:30 p.m. the same day. Lidstrom said he would have liked to watch his son play, and to see the set-up at Clark Park. “It would have been fun, just to see the game,†he said.

It would be like the Wings signing Ovechkin in the off-season and you bitching because Mario Lemieux was better. So what if Lidstrom is not playing like a Top 5 defenseman of all-time? He's still amongst the best in the world today. Edited February 20, 2010 by egroen

We only have around $16MM available next season without Lidstrom, if he gets top dollar he will handcuff the Wings by taking up most of thier money, thus hindering them from changing this team. You cannot tell me you want to see this exact same team next season... I never said Lidstrom sucks or isnt playing like a top 5 d-man OR the best in the world.... Hmmmmm..... Your earlier comment was anything over $2m and Lidstrom was "handcuffing" the team, which you are justifiably backpedaling from. "Top dollar" is of course a far cry from $2m. ShanahanMan 473 Report post Posted February 21, 2010 Its time for Lids to realize he isn't a 7.5/mil a year player anymore. While he is still an elite player, for us to improve upon our team in the off season requires Lids to make a BIG cut. I'd say down to maybe 1.5-2/mil a year for two years. If he's willing to sign for that amount, then I'd love to have him back.

Not to mention Rafs (and we can prolly agree he's overpaid, but still worth at least $2m/yr), Kronner, and Stuart. You're saying our captain, who is still a top 10 d-man in the league, should be the 4th highest paid d-man on his team and the 9th highest (pending free agent signings) player. That's ******* dumb. king_malice 17 Report post Posted February 21, 2010 (edited) Lidstrom if he comes back will be in the 2-5 mill a year range no lower no higher ! I agree Lidstrom could get top dollar still somewhere else, but then again he probably could have left years ago and got more then the 7.5 he got from the wings. Lidstrom seems like a loyal ungreedy guy and if he knows by taking the big pay cut could help out the team, get some more players and potentially get the team and Lidstrom another cup i have a feeling he would do it. RF/UFA cap hits Maltby (883,000) Lebda (650,000) Holmstrom (2,250,000) Lilja (1,250,000) Bertuzzi (1,500,000) Eaves (500,000) Williams(1,500,000) Helm (600,000) Abdelkader (850,000) Meech (480,000) $10,463,000 with Lidstrom $17,913,000 Edited February 21, 2010 by king_malice

Perhaps I exaggerated my numbers a bit, but you have to remember he's turning 40. 40.....thats a big freakin number and no doubt, we should assume his play will decline a bit. Perhaps a one year 3/3.5 mil then.
