king_malice 17 Report post Posted February 26, 2010 Last night i had a dream that the Wings traded Filppula and Lebda with a 3rd round pick to the Kings for Jack Johnson. Just a dream but with Lidstrom and Rafalski getting up there in age, do you think the Wings would make a move for Johnson (23yrs old-1.425mill contract). There are rumors the Kings would be willing to move him for a top six forward. I think Johnson is a awsome D but i like Flip not to sure if i would trade him. There are rumors the Kings would be willing to move him for a top six forward. I think Johnson is a awsome D but i like Flip not to sure if i would trade him. I'm not sure I'd make that trade. Johnson's struggled quite a bit at the NHL level. He's yet to show why they drafted him so high. Yes Filppula is older and has a lower theoretical potential to be an impact player, but he's a much better forward than Jack is a defenseman right now and Johnson's shown very little improvement over his NHL seasons. That'd be a huge gamble for the Wings. If Filppula wasn't showing signs of improvement the trade would make more sense but we still haven't seen what Val's upper limit is. Put it this way: Filppula's a top 6 forward right now who plays great defensively, is strong in the circle and has all the tools to be an impact player except finishing ability. If Filppula never gets better he's still a good NHL player. If he can improve his finishing skill or at least learn to take tons of shots he can be a 60pt or if we're lucky a 70pt player. Johnson is a bottom pairing d-man who plays piss poorly defensively, doesn't see the game well, appears to be difficult to coach, but he has great offensive ability/potential and all the physical tools to be good. Right now he could still be a huge bust. If he pulls his s*** together he'll be a top pairing d-man. If not he'll flounder and be a #5 or 6 d-man. I'm inclined to make the safe choice unless I had scouts telling me otherwise.
cupforwings 138 Report post Posted February 26, 2010 They would never trade Filpula for Jack Johnson... If they are going to trade him at all, which they won't, it would be for a better defensemen than Jack Johnson.

I agree that's why i said i wouldn't trade Flip for him, The potential is there with Johnson and he has talent now but maybe a season or to with guys like Lidstrom and Rafalski could help turn him into a top D. But defintly not for the price of Flip.
mmamolo 287 Report post Posted February 26, 2010 I'd have to agree with Drake. My personal preference is not to move Filppula period. However, if we were to move him I would think we would be able to get a better return than Jack Johnson. That being said, I am a fan of Johnson's and hope that he develops into the player a lot of ppl think he can become. Although, the notion of moving Lebda is appealing..... Guest Crymson Report post Posted February 27, 2010 Jack Johnson gets undue attention and preference here because he is from Michigan. I think this makes people forget that he is an average defenseman right now, and one with attitude and work-ethic issues to boot.
SweWings 45 Report post Posted February 27, 2010 The big thing for Detroit fans right now is getting some kind of a replacement for Lidström and in a lesser sense Rafalski but looking for a miracle fix like this is definitely not the answer.
titanium2 867 Report post Posted February 27, 2010 I'm thinking that they'll probably "replace" Lidstrom with the usual quality top-3 dmen and then better forwards. Or better goaltenders.
Carman 387 Report post Posted February 27, 2010 Jack Johnson is American, and Flippula is Finnish. Johnson is already 10x the player Flippula could ever hope to become.

Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted February 27, 2010 Damn you, and your solid/logical reasoning Though I must say Jack Johnson has been looking sharp these Olympics. Yes he has.

We all know you're trying to be a troll, and it's a cute gimmick. However, you're doing a piss-poor job here; you're making it very obvious what you're trying to accomplish. JJ and Shea Weber are the 2 young stud d-men to build a d-corp off of. Take another hit, before you post trades again, though.

Yeah. You whine about Ericsson being bad defensively. JJ is no better after playing 200 NHL games. Edit: And you pick JJ over Doughty as one of your two d-men to build around? Shea Weber >>> Jack Johnson Many other defensemen lie in between (and a couple of others before Weber).
