It's time for payback from 2002!

I don't recollect why, but I don't remember there being so much hype 8 years ago.

The hype this time around is unreal.

I've never seen anything like it in my time living in America. People who don't know s*** about hockey are talking about it everywhere. For some reason, no one seemed to care back in 2002.

To be honest, we were only 5 months removed from 9/11 at that point, I doubt very seriously anyone cared too much about the Olympics, as much of a welcome distraction as they were.

I would caution people against being overconfident and arrogant.....you'll find yourself wishing you had shown some restraint.

I dont know. At that time it was all about flag-waving and loving everything America. What happened was awful, but the months following were some of the best times to be an American in a way. People going out of their way for each other, liberals and conservatives getting along. Another discussion for a different place I suppose.

I also agree this matchup is getting more hype. Seems like the hockey outsiders are a little more invested this time.

I agree - seems as though there's alot more interest/hype...Maybe it's due to the fact that we were looked upon as longshots to medal?

Either way... :usaflag: :patriot: :usaflag:

I doubt most casual fans know who was or wasn't favored to win the Gold.

Maybe it was becuase of 9/11 like Electrophile said.

Or maybe it's because of our budding war with Canada. :P

I agree with you, it definitely was one of those galvanizing moments, similar to probably only the months following Pearl Harbor. I think what I was more getting at, was while there was a lot of "ra-ra USA" going on, it was mostly just general rooting for our Olympians rather than a focused interest in any particular sport or event. I watched the gold medal game that year because I wanted to see Steve get a medal, but there wasn't this insane amount of "ZOMG YOU MUST WATCH THIS OR YOU'LL DIE!!!" going on.

Actually "years" following the attack on Pearl Harbor. We had longer memories and patience then. Or rather, our grandparents/great-grandparents did. (Our Greatest Generation)

Or maybe there's just a lot of people who really hate Sidney Crosby.

I like how this tournament is showing that Cindy is among 1 of 20 great Canadian born players. It's been a collection of guys that have led Canada to the Gold Medal Game, it's not just one player. I hope the media and Bettman clue in, but I doubt it.

I'm ok either way Sunday, I like both Canada and the USA, so I don't have a preference on who wins. It's just like at sporting events, I sing both National Anthems.

Huh? It's all in fun. For most of us at least. They put up pictures of our President as a retarded wrestler, we put up pictures of their Prime Minister as a moose.

I'm just hyper-sensitive to the lack of discourse of any issue in my country anymore. Everything is reduced to sound-bites and jpegs. These are the tool of Ideologues who can't think their way out of a paper bag. It's all very tedious, but my bad...I guess its all in good fun and I'm well beyond 20 something.

I know, at least in my wife's case, that some non-hockey fans are rooting against Canada because they are sick of hearing about how good Sidney Crosby is. Case in point--even a person such as my wife, who never paid attention before last year, would say things like "Why are they making such a big deal about him? That Ovechkin guy is so much more exciting. Doesn't he score more, too?"

The only people who like Crosby and his antics are people in Canada (some) and people in Pittsburgh (bandwagon). I wouldn't be surprised, though, if Bettman ends NHLer Olympics if Crosby wins. Then, his little quest would be complete. Then again, if he loses, Crosby might whine to get a shot in Sochi. Who knows.

BTW, I hate Sidney Crosby.

I just post stupid jpegs to save time. I wish I had this luxury at work. I spend all day finding faults and trouble shooting. The constant arguing and banter tends to wear on me. People tend to take it personally and get very defensive about their work performance. So, as I said I just find a stupid pic that relates and post it. Nothing here is personal. I don't hate Canada, I don't hate people who differ in opinions other than my own. I do find it comical to see some of the replies to a stupid picture though.
