Jordan Owens (F) acquired for Kris Newbury (F)

I would imagine he's marginally more effective than Kris Newbury, which isn't saying a ton. It's not like we're swapping all-stars here.

I just hope he has a mustache, too.

Sigh. No mustache. I would imagine the trade has everything to do with this, though:

Griffins' Newbury suspended indefinitely by AHL

GRAND RAPIDS -- Kris Newbury's role as an agitator mostly has served both him and the Grand Rapids Griffins well this season.

The American Hockey League, however, said he took things too far recently.

The league has suspended Newbury indefinitely pending a review of his ejection less than 4 minutes into the Griffins' 7-3 loss to the Hamilton Bulldogs on Thursday night.

per MLIVE

This was months ago, I know - but I have a hard time not believing that Wings brass was less than thrilled by this. Obviously, the Rangers could care less about a player's conduct on or off the ice.

Dude, that was months ago. He only ended up being suspended for a couple of games.

In all honesty, Holland just traded a 28 year old for a 23 year old.

That is a good trade anyway you look at it when neither player is a true NHL player.

I would like to point out that we actually used Newburry for a couple of games this year, perhaps this means that a deal is on a way to reinforce the depth at forward.

I know, I appended my post after you quoted but before I realized anyone had. I wasn't clear in my post, but Newbury has yet to really show much aside from being an agitator - not really the style of play conducive with our squad (obviously).

Apparently some fans find it insulting that Holland would make a move at the deadline without it being a big move. Apparently those fans would rather that he had done nothing if it wasn't something significant.

Entitlement and agitation, anyone?

If people really believe there is going to be any moves other than ones like this they really don't know anything. At best Wings get a depth forward but even that might a stretch. They have $200k in cap space. A lot of value with players that make that?

He brought some much needed leadership to a Grand Rapids team with very few leaders, and was actually one of the few consistant performers in the AHL. He's scored more goals than this Owens guy. Dont get this move at all.

Living near Avs fans has seemingly made you very defensive.

I think that deadline deals, as fun as they are to follow (and especially from the perspective of a Wings fan circa 1994 to 2002) are significantly overrated. It seems like the best moves are the Brad Stuart and Hal Gill-type moves that add depth without completely altering the chemistry of a roster 20 games before the playoffs.

But it is a little frustrating that the Wings need to "stand pat" because of cap concerns while a team like Chicago (which has MAJOR cap issues and signed Hossa after we declined--due to cap issues) made two pretty nice moves in swapping Barker for Johnsson and now picking up Boynton. No, I don't want us dangling the Tomas Tatars and valuable draft picks for stopgap upgrades, but I'm also not sure I buy that our hands are completely tied. And it's not like don't have NEEDS this year.

The problem though it's hard to say what the needs exactly are when they've lost around 300 man games already this year. Franzen, Filppula and Williams healthy all year I think changes things a lot. You have to trade players off to bring guys in. Lebda or Meech would be traded but how much would you really get back though? something that is for sure better and will help?

An expiring contract and picks are valuable assets to teams in financial trouble looking to dump salary and get in the black next season. s*** happens in the NBA all the time. In our situation you just gotta match salary for salary sending an expiring salary to the team we trade with.

I guess they were going to let Newbury go in the summer anyway, whereas this Owens dude has another year on his contract and would be a RFA even then. He's supposed to be a hard worker and a good two-way player who lit up the OHL.

It doesn't seem like a bad move to me.

Bad move.

Newbury could actually drop the gloves and that's all I really care about.

Owens is a willing fighter too, fights about once every 10 games he dresses for, that's good for 8 a year if he'd ever play a full season - more than any current Red Wing.

Although Owens is small and weak at 180lbs and sucks at fighting, he's willing. That tells me the kid has heart and I hope he makes it. This team could stand to have a guy in the locker room who doesn't turtle everytime a big meanie wants to take it beyond facewashing. It ain't about winning fights - or even fighting per se - it's about showing up and not being afraid of your opposition. I'm still a bit embarassed from when Franzen dove to the ice in such a cowardly fashion that even the linesman was laughing at him. I mean yeah, Ryan Getzlaf would kick the crap out of Fran, but you don't have to be such a disgrace to the sweater on national TV.

Yeah, not much exciting. 6'0", 180, shoots left, 23 years old. Had 12 goals in 67 AHL games last year.

That's a good move in my eyes.

Newbury is a 28 year old garbage pick-up Holland made solely for depth purposes. The Leafs were happy to let him go. He's been disappointing in GR and if he honestly wants to be an NHL player he better prove himself more useful than he has. I wish him all the best in NY but he was never a Wings prospect.

Owens is a 23 year old kid who's purely a prospect. He hasn't impressed but he still could. He has good size and the advantage of youth. Hopefully he pans out but if he doesn't it's no loss to the Wings-- they gave up a 28 year old minor league kid who they signed as a UFA the previous season for him.

This is a smart move by Holland. He's just giving the Wings more youth and potentially a shot at an NHL forward in a few years. And he did it for free. Obviously this isn't a dazzling move but Newbury was going to leave this summer anyway so this young kid gets added for free. How could Holland say no? :)

Reading Rangers boards -- They don't like it

Younger kid with decent promise (to play on a lower line in the NHL) - plays with a ton of heart and has speed.

Was actually voted "fan favorite" on his AHL team.
