Those lines are pretty good. I'd have Helm on the 3rd line and Abby centering the 4th though, since Helm is easily the better hockey player right now. Can't wait for the new season to begin, it feels like it's been forever since I watched a Wings game.

Abdelkader has better offensive potential than Helm, let's not waste it on the 4th line.

Love it!

I would prefer a few changes. I think Helm would make a better 3rd line center than Abby, and that Abby is a better 4th line grinder than Helm. Also I'd throw Hudler up on the second line.

What I would love to see given our cap space (obviously dependent on what these players want on the market and what our RFAs/Potential 6th D end up getting).

Option 1 (defensive-minded):

- Sign Evgeny Artyukhin (RW, right-handed, Previous Cap Hit: 1 million)

- Affordable, huge, fast skater who throws some huge hits and will drop gloves on occasion. Not neccesarily defensively-responsible, but adds a ton of energy to an already speedy, energetic 4th line. Also, allows Cleary to stay on the 3rd line, who is more defensively-responsible than most UFA's that would take his spot.

Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Holmstrom

Franzen - Filppula - Hudler

Bertuzzi - Abdelkader - Cleary

Eaves - Helm - Artyukhin

*I am fully aware that Hudler does not play right wing, just a hypothetical situation where I'd like to see him getting second line minutes (either on his off wing or someone else having to do that).

Option 2 (offensive-minded):

- Sign Marek Svatos (RW, right-handed, Previous Cap Hit: 2.05 million)

- Should probably have a lower cap-hit due to injuries, lack of production last year... but he's about a point per every other game type player with a great shot and some offensive potential that has been seen at times).

Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Holmstrom

Franzen - Filppula - Bertuzzi

Hudler - Abdelkader - Svatos

Eaves - Helm - Cleary

Add a player with goal scoring potential to the third line, making the top 3 lines all legitimate scoring threats. Svatos could be a nice option on the second PP unit, as well. If he has Jason Williams syndrome half way through the season: Promote Cleary and dress Riotla.

Maybe a little more power on the 2nd line, but less size. Flip needs some size to buy him room. He's a great player, when he's not being shut down going into the zone every single rush. Putting a small player on his right wing, leaves only Franzen to fight into the zone. Like it or not, Bert can muscle his way into a zone. What he does from there is where it gets questionable, but he can certainly still get into the zone with a little force.

Helm is tenacious, but no where near ready to center anything but a fourth line. And with Bert and Cleary as Wingers to Helm.....well, I guess you liked the outcome of 2010 if this is what you propose. You're lineup basically promotes top 6 scoring, and leaves us with nothing bottom 6. Helm cannot center Cleary, and Bert would just be a mess on that line.

"Whoever" will be Draper. And they won't have Draper play wing. He's a faceoff guy. Again, to me a worthless line.

I think....And I dunno....I'm no pro here....but I think somehow Babcocks' ideas are better. I get the feeling he is a bit more qualified at this.

Wow, Abby is going to be centering the highest scoring 3rd line in the NHL. Hudler, who Babcock has said publicly he expects 70 points from and a healthy Dan Cleary, who makes the same money so should be expected to put up the same numbers.....I'll buy Cleary's jersey if he even hits 60 points, and trust me when I say I'm not too worried about having to spend that $100.00.

How familiar are you with the concept of logic?

They've been trying this for years. It's a chance to see if Filppula can be a consistent 2nd line centre. This is the 3rd season they've tried it (4th if you count the start of 07-08). The past two seasons they had to abandon the plan because Filppula couldn't carry the 2nd line offensively. Hopefully this year will be different.

This. That was the first thing I thought when I saw those lines. I like Hudler up on the second line over Bert.

Mule provides the size that you described. To me Bert on the other wing just seems redundant.

Helm is far more NHL qualified than Abby is at the moment. His speed alone makes him a better option to create chances for Bert, Cleary, Hudler or whomever.

Also "whoever" probably won't be Draper, but will be a signing as Holland has constantly hinted at. Also Draper is no longer a faceoff man, he played on the wing for nearly all of last year. But again, I don't think he will crack the lineup most nights.

Dude what world are you living in? 07-08 was his second season, how much more could you expect out of him than doubling his point total from his rookie year? 08-09 he never had a semblance of a chance on the 2nd line until the second half of the playoffs and last year he still played with 3rd/4th liners for half the year yet still put up 12 points in 15 games after he came back from his injury playing with Ritola/Abds/Williams/Cleary. I could call that carrying his line.

If Flip spends the year on the second line and gets adequate PP time and gets under 60 points/60 point pace I'll never post on this board again. And you can quote me on that one year from now. (I won't actually stop posting, but I'm willing to risk taking the reputational sacrifice)

He couldn't do it in 08-09 either. It's ok man. I want Filppula to be a star. I'm a Wings fan-- of course I do. But that doesn't change that fact that next season we'll be talking about his potential "break out year" like we have every year. Hopefully it will happen this year. No excuses. No "he needs x or y and he didn't get it so it doesn't count this time". We need Filppula to be a legit 2nd line centre who can put up points accordingly. And if he does break 50pts this year (and I sincerely hope he does because it will make the Wings a better team and he's a good player who deserves success) you don't get to gloat because you've been promising it for years now-- even a broken clock is correct twice a day.

Helm has probably come close to his offensive potential, while Abby is still growing into his. Other than speed, I fail to see how Helm is more qualified right now. Last year Abby played most of his NHL games with May and Maltby, while Helm was playing with Eaves and Drapes. Therefore, you cannot judge his offensive skills from his numbers with the Wings. I would agree with you if we had a grinding third line, but I think Abby's play is better suited for a scoring line than Helm's play.

I'm a little surprised this hasn't been mentioned...BUT...there's nothing wrong with a little hank/pav double-shifting in a close game. either would look great in between hudler and cleary.

You're right, there are no more excuses for Filppula. He's going to have the chance, the linemates and (he better have) the PP time. 50 points is a given, if you have any doubt he won't get 50 points you are a fool. That's just the way it is. He had a 50 point pace despite playing half his games with third liners. If Flip gets 60 points (which I know he will, but other can have their doubts, and they'd be reasonable) then I'll just be telling gcom I told you so. If he gets 70, which I think he is very capable of if he plays 2nd line center all year with the PP time, you can damn well bet I'll be gloating.
