taxijim 11 Report post Posted July 16, 2010 Its the middle of the month & Helmer still isn't signed. Whats the deal....is he holding out for more money than the offer he got.....is Kenny using him as trade bait......or all they all just waiting for things to unfold with salary cap? They seem more interested in signing the likes of Meech & Maltby....I don't get it!

redwingmachine 189 Report post Posted July 16, 2010 I agree, I'm getting a little worried myself. I don't want to lose a youngster with his speed and work ethic. There were times last season that I thought he was the only one giving it 100%. I would hate to seem him go. Trade bait is an interesting thought...

There were times last season that I thought he was the only one giving it 100%. I would hate to seem him go. Trade bait is an interesting thought... There is no way Holland would trade Helm or Abdelkader... We are talking about young guys with speed and grit, and they are pretty cheap. Detroit has no cap ($$$) so why would you trade these guys when you CAN'T anything better (at the same price)... They are going to be signed - multi year deals after this "soap opera" Dynasty II with PriMadona thing...
HankthaTank 1,100 Report post Posted July 16, 2010 Yeah, I am thinking maybe August 1st is a likely deadline for a lot of things to take place. But shiiiiitttt it would be nice to hear something.

hooon 1,089 Report post Posted July 16, 2010 No arbitration. Offers have been sent out, theres no rush. We aren't losing Helm, no need to worry.
zettie85 106 Report post Posted July 16, 2010 They are expecting to sign him and Abby to several year deals after they find out what Madono is doing. If that is the case then I say screw Modano. He is a decent enough player but really he should jump at the chance to play here. We shouldn't have to wait on him. There is obviously plenty of time left but I'm sick of guys holding out with no decisions. Maybe it will be another Sundin and Neidermyer situation. If it is I hope the Wings cut off talks with him. Sign our future now. I don't like waiting on people. Just make a god damn decision. 1 redwingfan19 reacted to this

GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted July 16, 2010 Yeah, Madonna is taking way too long, and I hope it doesn't screw anything else up. I can't believe there's all this commotion for some old man who's going to play on the 3rd line. 4 HankthaTank, Dominator2005, Namingway and 1 other reacted to this
Dominator2005 558 Report post Posted July 16, 2010 Huh? When team has cap space they can afford to move young (cheap) player in order to get someone better (more expensive), to get a better exemple for you - if Detroit had some space thay could go after Gagné (who is available for prospects/draft picks)... wingsdiehard13 33 Report post Posted July 16, 2010 (edited) This is about the 7th thread on our RFA's. Does anyone remember when Filppula was a Restricted Free Agent in 2008? It was until July 30th when Val re-signed. Relax, Helm and Abdelkader will be back, RFA's take more time to sign. Especially when they file for arbitration, although neither of those two did. Edit: Modano will not cost us Helm, no chance. Edited July 16, 2010 by wingsdiehard13

Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted July 17, 2010 I'm sure it's just about ironing out things for longer term deals. There's no way that Detroit loses two guys who are going to be staples on the PK in the coming years. I can see each guy getting around 900K or so for 3-4 year deals maybe. At least I hope so. That being said, if Modano comes here, someone will have to go to get that 500K in extra space that Holland wants for injury call-ups.
miller76 463 Report post Posted July 17, 2010 Early on, even before July 1st, I remember Holland being quoted that Abby and Helm wouldn't be signed til sometime in August, due to longer term deals. Patience, and hopefully both sides get what they want. 1 13dangledangle reacted to this

Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted July 17, 2010 If we somehow lose Helm because of Modano signing, I wonder how all the pro-Modano slappies around here will feel? I wouldn't call myself a pro-Modano slappy. I do want him here, because I think he'll bolster our 3rd line. That being said I would be furious if it's at the expense of Helm. Same with Abdelkader as well, as I think that at very least he's going to be a very solid PK for years to come. I'm fine with losing Miller or Ritola, though. Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted July 17, 2010 (edited) There's no need to worry. Holland is seeking mult-year deals on Abdelkader and Helm which means the bargaining process is more drawn out. Furthermore, because neither has arbitration rights or is a likely target for another team to steal Holland has time to take it slower and try to solidify the financial picture more carefully. Edit: spelling Edited July 17, 2010 by Drake_Marcus

There's been absolutely zero indication that Helm will play elsewhere next season, and it's been assumed that he wasn't going to be one of the first players re-signed. Just going through the motions like normal right now. No need to pull any hair out.

Edit: spelling The only thing I'm worried about is that if we wait to long to sign them, the market gets thinner and thinner. Thus making it easier for teams with more space to write offer sheets that we can't or will refuse to match. A team that needs that PK improved plus have plenty of cap space probably wouldn't mind offering more than he is worth at this point in time.
