Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 I think everyone here knows Niemi does blow and he isn't worth that much. But Turco is continually the Wings *****, and he is now the division rival. Not to mention he has gone downhill and won't nearly have the support that Neimi had while he was net. Basically no matter whether they signed Turco or Neimi there goaltending is going to blow. Turco= back up on great, tandem on good, and starter on lower. Plus he didn't have the best year on a below-average Stars team, and was all but replaced for stretches with freaking Alex Auld.

Guest Crymson Report post Posted August 2, 2010 (edited) From Second City Hockey: The fact of the matter is that the Hawks are indeed holding to form to the Detroit model of success, which largely takes the goalie out of the equation provided the skaters in front of him are skilled enough, and Niemi's success coming from seemingly out of nowhere as far as the general public is concerned only drove that point home. LOL. Nice try, dude. Sure, in the salary cap era we've always had a great team and paid the goalie a low salary, that doesn't mean that the goalies have sucked. For example, look at last year; Howard played INCREDIBLY, behind an oft-injured team. Idiots. At least the article makes reference to the fact that Hawks fans are now, at long last, panicking. NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 An average goalie who got a hot streak replaced with an aging average goalie who sucks in the playoffs. Fixed it for you. 2 Original-Six and Jamessss reacted to this

Guest EZBAKETHAGANGSTA Report post Posted August 2, 2010 Fixed it for you. Turco actually has had more good playoff runs then bad ones (3-2). His lack of playoff wins really isn't his fault as much as Dallas'. In 2006-2007 he had 3 shutouts, yet the Stars still managed to lose the series. His playoff numbers are better than Nabokov's just to name one "high-tier" goalie.
DangleDangleBeach 16 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 turco is going to benifit hard from a strong chicago defense... but he still has a losing playoff record and is known for being a choker but at 1.5 per year thats a good deal for the hawks especially with their cap issues. Guest Crymson Report post Posted August 2, 2010 Why do you guys not understand that Niemi was an average goalie? Oh he won the CUp, so he must be great. Turco @ 1.3 m >>>>>>>>>>>>> Niemi at 2.75 and it's not even close at all. We replaced an average goalie with another average one. What devastation. Wiiiishful thiiiiinking! Niemi has the potential for very significant improvement. Turco, meanwhile, has sucked since '08. His last good performance was against the Sharks in the '08 playoffs. Grim 5 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 Turco is serviceable.... but he's also a playoff-underachiever at 35 years old. the Hawks are rolling the dice on some pretty bleak odds.
RedWingedKitten 9 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 (edited) Just to clarify Huet will NOT be with the Hawks. They had to downgrade the goalies even without Huets cap hit. Corey Crawford will back up Turco. (I'm pretty sure) [edit] it could be Toivonen as back up. I think we are now the legitimate favorites to win the Central. His playoff numbers are better than Nabokov's just to name one "high-tier" goalie. 3-2 isn't exactly stellar numbers for any goalie worth his salt. Comparing him to Nabokov's doesn't strengthen the argument either, rather it just lumps him in with another playoff underachiever. The 06/07 playoffs were his only decent run. Any *solid* playoff goalie raises their level of play and their numbers somewhat significantly come postseason. Marty doesn't fall into that category. Guest Heaten Report post Posted August 2, 2010 curious... why are so many in glee over the Hawks troubles?? its San-freakin- Jose that ousted/embarassed the Wings in the last playoffs. Kenny needs to shore up the defense and PK. Couldn't disagree more. 1. NHL embarrassed itself for hiring such imbeciles to referee games in the playoffs. 2. Red Wings played more games than any team in the entire NHL since lockout. The 2006 roster wasn't much different from the 2010 roster. Of course this will start wearing on players as they play more games than all other players in the world... despite how "professional athletes", they are still human beings. 3. Red Wings suffered from one of the worst injury riddled regular season than most can remember from the history of the franchise. No way these players were healthy going into the post season. 4. Despite all odds, Red Wings still made it to the 2nd round and played well enough to win against the #1 team in the West... Just couldn't get over the hump (See: injuries, phantom calls / 5-on3s). I may be the minority here, but I am completely satisfied with the Red Wings and appreciate their efforts with all things considered. Red Wings are, without a doubt, the best team since lockout. Why can't others appreciate all this teams success and accomplishments? 11 F2B&G, Hockeytown0001, Namingway and 8 others reacted to this
