Draper to miss an additional 4-6 weeks

Long Term IR and a little salary cap relief. Get well soon, #33.

No salary cap relief, his number still counts against the team... it's just that the Wings can go over the cap slightly should they need to call someone up.

I guess I'll be the first to post that I wish they had known this weeks ago so that the Wings didn't have to lose Ritola for nothing...

Indeed. We would have had the Stanley Cup locked up for sure. Ritola is easily a 15-goal scorer in the playoffs.

Note: we'd still have had to lose Ritola for nothing when Draper came back.

Even if Draper was healthy he wouldn't be playing. Abdelkader doesn't even have a spot right now.

Really this injury only changes one thing-- the blow to Draper's ego when he's dining with the Mr and Mrs I in the owner's box instead of sitting on the bench.

Cap question I guess.

So Tick Tock says no LTIR for Drapes as he doesn't need the cap space. I understand why we don't need the space to bring anyone up from GR right now, with Abby coming back and becoming the extra forward . But don't we save cash against the cap for the time Drapes is on LTIR? I thought the portion of his salary paid while on LTIR wouldn't count against the cap. So that would be money we have overall against the cap and would be leeway for later in the season...

Why wouldn't we put someone on LTIR if they are out 4-6 weeks????

"SURGERY FOR DRAPER: General manager Ken Holland said Kris Draper will undergo surgery for a sports hernia today, and will be out four to six weeks. The Wings aren't putting Draper on long-term injury reserve because they don't need the room."

I don't think it works like that. We only get cap relief while he is out.

Which begs another question. What happens if for what ever reason we do need to call someone up while he is out and can't do it because he wasn't put on LTIR? I mean didn't we just play a game with 17 skaters because of this problem?

LTIR doesn't give cap space.

We have the same cap figure if someone is on LTIR or not. The CBA allows for a team to exceed the cap by the LTIR's combined (if multiple) salary. There is no benefit to placing Draper on LTIR unless we need to call someone up, and that can be done retroactively when needed.
