Sheahan

Seems like its only Konnan, Aussie wing and myself ever in the prospects section so Ill post this here because its definitely worth people knowing.

After being called a bust he put up around a ppg at the end of last season and dominated the world junior camp

In 10 games this y ear he has 12 points and 4 goals. Last year he had 5 goals total and only 22 points.

At this rate, he should be going to the AHL this upcoming season. He has unreal defense and the offense has finally turned a corner. With no size or toughness in the top lines with Tardif gone in grand rapids, Sheahan should be able to see ice time there, especially with Nyquist and Tatar probably leaving for the NHL after this season. Hes starting to really solidify himself as a top prospect since last christmas. Personally I like him more than Pulkkinen now actually.

Anyways, its good to see a kid who a lot of people were already writing off as a third or 4th liner absolutely killing it this year offensively

I wish the prospects section of LGW was more visited as well. I check it out from time to time but the conversations are usually fairly slow paced. Hopefully more posters hop over there more often.

I don't think Sheahan is/was a bust. I think some assumed he had better offensive tools than he did. I don't think he's one of the Wings' top prospects I definitely think he has a great shot at being in the NHL one day. I want to see him go pro and focus all of his time on hockey before I fully judge him one way or the other.

The point totals are nice, and are probably increasing because he's getting PP time, but I just don't see the offensive abilities to be a top-6 NHLer. He still doesn't stand out offensively when I watch him, and his style of play screams 3rd-line shutdown center. I'm no expert, but I would be very surprised if he ever put up big points in a top-6 role in the NHL. Bust? Not at all. A quality 3rd line center is very valuable.

Powerforward tpyes usually take longr to develop their skills though. It seems they are finally starting to come together.

Have you seen him play at all this year? Just curious

Yeah, twice. The games I saw he picked up secondary assists on the powerplay and wasn't very noticeable 5-on-5. Still plenty of time to develop considering he's probably the youngest junior in college hockey.

I took a new position about 2 mths ago and haven't been able to post as much lately :-(

I usually just read the prospects section, as it usually has good info on players across the pond that I'm not able to follow as closely here...

Thanks for the update!

I have season tickets to Notre Dame this year and have been impressed with him (2 goals last game) but haven't noticed him much on the offensive end. Solid two way player, impressed with him on the defensive end.

I have always liked Sheahan, and am not surprised by his recent play, but you know who I am very disappointed in? Landon Ferraro. I thought for sure he was something a lot more than what he has been so far. Maybe he will be a slow developer, but he is on the way down the Prospects list. Doesn't look good...

Ferraro shouldn't be written off. True, he'll never be a scorer in the NHL, but he could certainly still make it as a bottom 6 forward due to his incredible speed. He can really fly out there, and he's also not afraid of playing physical.

I barely have enough time to watch the Wings these days, but wanted to say it's great that you guys who get to see these kids play come here and bring an informed opinion to the site about future Red Wings.

Hockey's Future tries to do that, but I've found some of their opinions extremely suspect.

Yeah I try my best.

As a University student I get a lot of free time for weeks at a time in between assignments and what not so I try to dig up some streams and watch the young guys play. Go to the local OHL games when I can and Sportsnet is starting to cover the CHL as well.

I'm not going to pretend I'm some talent scout but I'll comment on the guys I've seen and hope others would do the same if they get to watch players that I dont.

I havent seen Sheahan yet this season, but rfom what I saw last season the only thing lacking was offense. This season he has it so I'm sure he looks pretty damn good out there

And yeah HF's converage of prospects is a joke really. They just go off scoutinr reports on the internet (most of which go off others from the net) and write like theyre professionals.

Their grading system is pretty bad too.

Theres some guys over there who really follow the prospects and get to watch games though, the posters are worht reading, not the writers lol

Part of the issue is related to the system and league he's in. You don't see the crazy 80's style action of the Q on a ND team. Sheahan's team emphasizes defensive accountability and relies on him in every situation. He's getting PP, PK, 5-on-5 time, OT time, every situation possible. In the times I've seen him play he's looked really well rounded but never stood out with extremely flashy plays. I will say that he looked to be reaaallly strong and filled out compared to the other guys in his league. It seems like Sheahan's already got a man's body and that definitely gives him an advantage against college competition (Nyquist, by comparison hasn't filled out enough). Now, if I remember correctly Sheahan's been this physically ahead of the curve since the combine. I haven't had a chance to watch Sheahan this season, though, but I plan to watch the ND game tonight.

I listened to the ND game last night while doing some school work. Sheahan was in on the 2nd goal (primary assist) and made some good defensive plays. Based on the radio crew's reactions he seems to have made a few great defensive plays on the PK. I wish I could have watched the game but listening to it was the next best thing. Another thing I noticed was that Sheahan was taking the key face-offs and winning most of them.

I thought he was outstanding last night. His size/speed combo is really impressive, but the most impressive thing to me is how refined his game is. He's really smart and responsible defensively, and uses his size to completely dominate in his own zone. Excellent on faceoffs and, like you said, was out there in key situations late in the game and overtime. His assist was a very nice setup on the rush and, based on that play, I can see why he's over a point-per-game and 4th in the CCHA in scoring. I'm officially excited (if you couldn't already tell).

I'm not quite sure if he'll ever be a top 6 guy but I'm startign to think even if he isnt, we could still have the best third line, selke potential third line shut down center in the league in a few years.

That would still be awesome if he were to hit the level of like Dave Bolland or Jordan Staal. Could be OK second line cetners and get the job done but are amazing third liners

I think he could be a Franzen type of guy. Someone who enters as a big banger with untapped offensive potential but finds their power game as they get older. The big difference is Franzen flew under a lot of radars and a 1st round pick certainly won't.

Yeah its easy to forget how good defensively Franzen was when he first came into the league. He threw a lot of big hits too. Too bad he couldnt play like that still while scoring, he would be a force.

Its rare powerforwards jump into the league right away, small speedy guys usually produce around the age of 23 24 25.

I find that powerforwards really come into their own around 26 or so. Once they put on about as much muscle as possible, as well as getting experience.

Corey Perry is a good example of this last year, Ryane Clowe as well. If Sheahan could become like CLowe I would be ecstatic

he's playing like he has something to prove...playing with hunger. he got cut from a WJC team he should have been on. wouldn't that piss you off? i hope he goes on a tear and wins the scoring race. kids got talent, that's for sure.

First off, I hope Sheahan does well, just like every Red Wings prospect. When he initially came around, I was disappointed the Red Wings didn't draft a d-man at the time, as that's what I felt their most pressing need was. It's good to see Sheahan do well at ND, considering how many people consider it to be a defensive team, unable to put up offensive numbers.

Second, that's completely wrong. It's not all going off just scouting reports on the internet, though, sometimes they have to be used. Be kind of impossible to get around to see all the prospects personally. What does happen is there are contacts who DO see these players in person, and so some of the information is second hand. You have to trust these others writers in Europe and such and take their opinions at face value.

The grading system has always been a frustration of mine, personally. It sends things out of whack on the depth page, because some guys are potential 3rd liners, but are sure to hit that potential. They end up being "ranked" higher up. But it is what it is.

I admit, the fall edition of the top 20 had to be rushed. I'd just jumped on as the Red Wings writer again three days prior, and things were a little bit messed up. I received some poor information on several European players (which I paid for dearly when I was accused of being anti-Euro by "changing their weights") and a few college guys. Now that I've had time to get back into the swing of things, I have a more clear picture of where guys fit in our system. For my money I still like Pulkkinen more than Sheahan in terms of pure, top 6 talent. Sheahan will be accustomed to North American hockey, but that's the only obstacle I can see Teemu facing on the road to becoming a high end player.

A lot of the info put out by the writers is solid, and we have a lot of good writers who really care about and pay attention the work they do. Like I said, things were rushed... I have to live with ranking Ben Marshall at number 10 for the foreseeable future. This does not please me.

Edit: I also wish people posted in the prospects forums more. I had a revamped list of our prospects, ranking them positionally without any letter grades. I was going to bounce it off some of the posters here, but I noticed nobody really posts there. The spring edition of the top 20 isn't out for awhile, so it was just for discussion and feedback... but if no one posts there, kind of difficult to get the discussion going.

Your writing is usually pretty solid and I dont disagree much with your rankings BUT there are a tonne of writers who are clueless on that website.

Joke wasnt the right word to use at all but thats my point, a lot of it isnt first hand information which it sometimes seems like that site tries to come off as.

And to add, I've never seen it done on this site but I would be curious to see if this site had a vote who would be the top ranked prospects

For my money, Smith retains. He's looked very solid to me with his time with the team. Nyquist is right there though. It's hard to put guys over others for me, especially when it's such a small sample size of strong play. I'd tempted to put Nyquist over Tatar, but Tatar has been solid for two years.

And honestly, the top 20 article wasn't my best effort. I admit that. Prospect ranking isn't an exact science, but I did make a few choices that I'd like to re-evaluate, especially on defense. I'm going to post a topic in the prospects forums with how I'd rank our players positionally at the moment. Maybe we can get some discussion going there.
