in watching Anthony Manta play live I think we have a pretty good prospect. I would compare his play style allot to Jeff carter of the LAK. his puck skills are similar to T.J Oshie of the Blues. My only complaint is that he tends to float allot, when away from the puck he looks like a below average player in the Q. I guess time will tell if he can fix that issue but all and all looks like a good prospect

True. To take an analogy from another sport, its like Dimitar Berbatov at Man Utd. A tall, unbelievably skilled player, with a very languid style. Unfortunately he played alongside Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez, two small energizer bunnies who were all over the pitch and make him look lazy because he wasn't chasing down players in the left back position.

Someone has already beat me to the Corey Perry analogy, there are plenty of other examples.

BTW, what do you guys think of leaving him in Junior for another year? The kid has already scored 50 goals, other than bad habits, what more can he learn there?

He would have to make the Wings, he would be ineligible to play for the Griffs. Hopefully he makes team Canada for the World Jrs.

A co-worker of mine--a former Flyer draft pick, and current Red Line Report scout--had this to say about Mantha:

"...we really don’t like Mantha but more because of his compete level.

He is a big kid with good hands. He can find the net – 6’3/200lbs 50 goals this year.

He’ll help out once he learns what it takes from the vets. We had him ranked 33rd overall – early 2nd round."

He mostly scouts the OHL however, and had this to say about our OHL picks:

"Zack Nastasiuk is not very fast and doesn’t make real quick reads/decisions but he is a gamer!

We had him ranked 4rth rd at 106. Wings picked him 2nd rd at 48. Think this was a bit early as he probably

would have still been there next rd. Can help offensively 20g 20a in 62games. Bit soft only 32pim.

Tyler Burtuzzi left me shaking my head. 2nd round at 58th. He has a heart the size of Texas but he plays

a big mans game in an average sized body. Willing to drop the mitts but got pummelled by a heavyweight last year

Was concussed and missed 1/3 of the season. Too early to choose this type of talent. We had him ranked 172 – 6th rd.

Think having his uncle Todd there might have helped sway some public relation votes.

Overall as RLR thinks, Detroit had their poorest draft in 10 plus years. But…it remains to be seen how the “prospects” develop."

Yeah, I'll go with the red wing scouts on there drafting abilities vs. wannabe scouts at any network. They should have earned the ability to make unpopular picks without scrutiny. Funny how he backslides "worst draft in 10 years, blah blah blah. But we will see how they develop." In 5 years he will be singing the praises of our prospects. We have all watched this movie before....

An interesting comment I read of Holland's during camp were, and I'm paraphrasing, "Everyone looked like prospects except for Mantha." I wonder if we'll see him called up if there's some injuries at the wing this season.

Unless he suddenly turns into Yzerman 2.0 during the prospect tourney or camp, I seriously doubt that. He'll spend at least another year in the Q before turning pro.

Another year? I'm mistaken, I thought he was done there for some reason. That's fine though, he'll have plenty of time to fill out his frame then.

At 18 & with his frame, I doubt he's ready to step up and play against men in the AHL, let alone make the jump all the way up to the bigs. He'll still have one more year at least in juniors & if he does manage to add some bulk and consistent complete level, he'll might be in GR starting in 2014-15 as a 19-20 year old.

Agreed, and then I think we're in for a treat.

Trade everyone over the age of 30 and bring all the kids up. I want to be like the Oilers.

Yah! Me too. Excep Dats, Z, and Kronkowski
