P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted July 2, 2013 The Detroit Red Wings had high hopes for big goaltender Tom McCollum when they drafted him in the first round, with the 30th overall pick, in 2008. McCollum didn't pan out, however, and now he will be moving on. The Red Wings will not tender the restricted free agent a qualifying offer, relinquishing his rights. MLive No surprise here. Pity it didn't work.

P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted July 2, 2013 They way he played I think he needs to get much better to make the NHL.
Wings4Life19 150 Report post Posted July 2, 2013 One of the few times the wings dont trade their first round pick and this is what happens.
akustyk 84 Report post Posted July 2, 2013 He ripened and ripened, but just couldnt over ripen. never know. at some point (around 2008 AFAIR) it all looked like Howard was a bust and was given too much time in minors to eventually not reach the NHL quality. and fans lost their patience. then he came in and... you know the rest. McCollum might yet make it, you never know.
AtomicPunk 296 Report post Posted July 2, 2013 Shoulda traded that pick. Like I always say, I will trade picks for proven NHL talent every day. If 1 or 2 out of 10 picks make it to the NHL, it's a good draft.
nuts2u 22 Report post Posted July 2, 2013 Oh well, Chet Pickard the goalie selected @ #18 in the same draft never made the NHL either. Currently playing in Sweden.
NorwegianWing 24 Report post Posted July 2, 2013 I feel like saying "good luck, kid" but he's older than me so I'll say "good luck, dude".
FlashyG 1,799 Report post Posted July 2, 2013 He ripened and ripened, but just couldnt over ripen. I must have missed when he ripened. IMO He arrived rotten. When you're average to below average in the ECHL your hopes of becoming an NHL goalie are pretty slim.

turbowhistle86 155 Report post Posted July 3, 2013 Sorry to see a pick not come through as we had hoped, but hey, Pat Kane is always looking for a driver.
unsaddleddonald 357 Report post Posted July 3, 2013 Does anyone recall him like, crying or something, just being really disappointed when the Wings drafted him?!?!? I remember him being quoted saying something to that effect...
ToledoWingsFan 8 Report post Posted July 3, 2013 I must have missed when he ripened. IMO He arrived rotten. When you're average to below average in the ECHL your hopes of becoming an NHL goalie are pretty slim. I can't say Toledo has had a good team to play in front of him during any of his time down here. I'm not saying he could be good, but I think his numbers would be improved had we iced a decent team, for obvious reasons.
Richdg 267 Report post Posted July 3, 2013 Not true. last night the RW did give him a qualifying offer. So T mac may still be ripening........ here is the link: http://network.yardbarker.com/all_sports/article_external/red_wings_overnight_report_fil_gone_colaiacovo_bought_out_det_unlikely_to_pursue_big_ticket_ufas/13962730
LeftWinger 4,963 Report post Posted July 3, 2013 No brainer....with the likes of Mrazek, Patterson and Coreau under contract, there is just no room for him...One of those three will be Jimmy's backup at some point this season with Monster's injury history... Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted July 3, 2013 Just to add to what Richdg said, per Twitter:"The #RedWings have released GK Jordan Pearce, and made a qualifying offer on Tuesday to GK Tom McCollum, the team's 2008 first-round pick."Head scratcher with Mrazek, Paterson and Coreau in the pipeline. StormJH1 231 Report post Posted July 3, 2013 Yeah, George Malik had a write-up about this, really bizarre. He hinted at some type of internal shake-up as to how this information could have come from the organization. Maybe now that his hockey career officially "died" on Twitter, he'll be free to perform without pressure! Or not.
Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted July 3, 2013 I really don't see him even hanging onto the back-up spot over Coreau... so this essentially feels like adding a body in Toledo,
