LeftWinger 4,963 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 Miller...he is already signed past this season, Eaves is expendable and I highly doubt will be re-signed, unless Holland moves a couple of prospects out of options... thing is, Callahan and Ferraro, who we all know will be out of exemptions, haven't even sniffed a cameo appearance in Detroit this season, and we have been injured more this year then almost ever. Are they just not good enough for the NHL? Not good enough to make it here? Maybe BOTH will get dealt to make room for Eaves and Alfie to come back? I do not like just throwing away prospects, but if they can be packaged to get us a need, then I guess it would be ok...add Almqvist to that trade list as well, because I highly doubt Holland will go into next season with the same D lineup minus Q and add only Almqvist... Miller and Eaves are pretty close to the same player. Eaves has a better shot, Miller is a bit better skater. The big difference is Eaves' medical history, which is why I think Miller was signed to taht 3 year contract in the first place. Ferraro hasn't been called up because he's basically the same player as Eaves and Miller, without the NHL experience, and has seen his production take a step back this year. Since he's been drafted, he's had one relatively productive year in either juniors or GR. He may be a solid defensive role player someday, but from what I've seen he doesn't have a whole lot of grit to his game, and very well could end up as the second coming of Emmerton. His future with the organization is in jeopardy and probably depends on how many free agents they sign this offseason. If they only sign one, I think he'll be back. If not, he's probably gone unless they trade some roster players. Callahan hasn't been called up because they've needed centers and he can't play center. He has a real good chance of being a good 4th line role agitator with a little bit of scoring touch. I'd be very surprised if he wasn't on the roster. I think the only way he doesn't make the team, barring trade, is if he completely craps the bed in camp.
Wheelchairsuperhero 1,453 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 I think one of the more overlooked bonehead moves that Holland made over the summer was signing Miller to a long term deal. With the roster and cap issues we had, it made no sense. We already had Eaves under contract this year and for cheap. I like Miller just fine and I wouldn't mind having both of them if the cap/roster allowed, but re-signing him to a long term deal just didn't make sense. I agree with this totally. Unnecessary contract. That said I like them both fine but would choose Eaves. Miller has absolutely no scoring touch.
GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 People act like Miller is the second coming of Kirk Maltby or Mike Keane. Penalty killing my ass. Eaves can do all the things he can, but he's right handed and has an occasional shot. 2 BadgerBob and Detroit \# 1 Fan reacted to this
TheDetroitRedWings 286 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 Tough choice here... Before this season started I would've said Miller hands down. But so far this season Eaves has seemed to step his game up (almost to where he was pre jaw injury). So I gotta give the slight edge to Eaves on this one. Dabura 12,207 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 Gotta go with Miller for his body of work and reliability with the Wings. He's been flat-out our best penalty killer for years. Eaves is eligible for waivers now and I don't think he would clear at this time if exposed. Besides, lots up players raise their game in their contract year. Miller has been consistent for years. Pretty much this. Miller is our best PKer. That counts for a lot.

I have a hard time seeing either on the roster out of camp. Maybe as extras.
dirtydangles 1,328 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 Ferraro will be lucky if he's the 14th forward and Callahan will be a reserve. Either Sheahan or Andersson will be 4C and the other or Abdelkader will be the other wing with Miller. We shall see. I think if Holland truly clears house with Cleary, Bert, Sammy, Tootoo then there will be one open spot on the 4th line. It could be Glendening/Callahan/Ferraro as they all have RH shots and would fit nicely there. I see Sheahan being 4th line C and then Andersson being shipped out at some point as Sheahan has more upside and we would be smart to keep him as he is showing 3C as his absolute bottom potential. I like that we have SPEED everywhere on that roster. Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Nyquist Franzen - Weiss - Alfredsson (Jurco the year after) Tatar - Helm - Abdelkader Miller - Sheahan - Glendening/Ferraro/Callahan (13,14th forward rotating in) If we keep Eaves over Miller then I guess you bump Eaves to the 3rd line and Abby to 4th line LW? Otherwise you end up with too many RW's on the 4th line. Just seems to make sense with the Miller being under contract and our plethora of RW bottom line players that we keep Miller (who also is an ironman). GoalieManPat 1,007 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 They are basically the same player. You can say Eaves has the better offensive potential but he hasnt really cashed in on that potential in 7+ years since his 20 goal rookie season. Since then they are both equal points wise. I see Miller as a slightly better defender. The big monkey on Eaves is that head injury. Once someone has a major one like that the chances of the smallest hit getting him again is far larger than that of Miller. I think Holland made a decision between the two when he resigned Miller. Either way I dont see either of them having a role with the team in two years.
DickieDunn 2,571 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 Arrange them how you want, but going into next year they have 7 legit top 9 forwards, 2 guys who have shown the ability to at least be complimentary players on a scoring line, and 4 guys who are 4th liners or haven't played in the NHL who would have to clear waivers to be sent to GR. Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Abdelakder Franzen-Weiss-Nyquist Tatar-Helm-Sheahan Miller-Andersson-Callahan Ferraro One free agent, be it Alfredsson or whoever, bumps Callahan out of the regular lineup. Two free agents bump Callahan and either Miller or Sheahan out, and someone off the roster. Neither Callahan or Ferraro have seen NHL time, Sheahan has and has played well enough to earn a spot next year. Between Callahan and Ferraro Callahan has been better and has taken a step forward every year. Ferraro struggled for most of the time since being drafted, mostly due to injuries, took a step forward last year, but now he's falling back this year. Unless he significantly outplays Callahan I think Ferraro is going to lose the battle for that last spot. I also think that he'd clear waivers.
Kira 451 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 I can't decide. Drew has been reliable and steady (and available for every game), but Patrick has been a lifesaver at times. Both of them are a bonus on the PK, and Patrick has been very lucky in the last two shootouts. Don't make me choose!
TheDetroitRedWings 286 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 I gotta say, almost all these players mentioned in this thread I like more than Andersson. I'll be shocked if he's a regular for us next season.

I'll be shocked if he's a regular for us next season.Hell be a regular somewhere.I doubt he would clear waivers, and he's awesome in the faceoff circle, and an awesome penalty killer. But i also don't see where he fits on this team going forward.
DickieDunn 2,571 Report post Posted February 7, 2014 The only way Andersson isn't on the roster next year is if he's included in a trade. He's a better player in every way than Glendening except for grit. He skates, passes, shoots, and wins faceoffs better and he's more aware offensively. Regardless of who Glendening has with him, he should have at least a little more offense than he's had. 1 Son of a Wing reacted to this
