Getting a Kopitar at 11 happens just as often as getting a McDavid at 1. Your logic makes no sense. But I've been talking about this for years now. You (and others like you) get soooo caught up in the hype of the draft that you're completely blind to the fact that those consensus #1 picks are RARELY that much better (or better at all) than guys you could get later in the draft. When all is said and done Alexis Lafreniere isn't going to be any better than Tim Stutzle. Jack Hughes won't be any better than Trevor Zegras. Rasmus Dahlin won't be any better than Quinn Hughes. You've bought into this idea that we need to tank to get these guys that are SOOOO much more "elite" and the reality is that they aren't really better at all.

Makes no sense except next two drafts are highly touted as having mcdavid level prospects ... no ones talking about 21 draft

you and others like you lmao ... im talking about extraordinary draft years not every single draft yr and we have back to back ones coming up ... was anyone better than mcdavid his year? Matthews? Kane? This is what im talking about not a nico hischier draft year or yakupov , get real man

If it was that easy finding top guys later we’d have drafted them already and not landing guys like rasmussen ... we could just as easily stay in limbo forever doing it your way

Again your bringing up draft years that fit your narrative im talking about generational talent in upcoming drafts ... we’ll see what happens i know we’ll be in the lottery mix next season so this is all pointless

Teams fall off the face of the earth all the time.

Bernier himself said he loves it in Detroit. Not far fetched to think he might stick around.

You seem to have a lot of faith in Laine carrying Columbus.

Yes. Detroit plays more good teams next season. They also play more bad teams. It balances out. We're in a division where the top 3 teams are top 5 in the entire league. Yet here we are, not in the bottom 5.

We’ll see

i have faith in laine’s abilities im sorry its that far fetched for you to think laine could get back in the 40 goal ballpark under a different coach + they cbj have a better roster than us plain and simple we dont have a d duo like they do ... theyre missing nyquist all yr , foligno is gone and likely will return

They play better teams alot more than bottom teams thats for sure.... and you dont think top 5 in the league cause they play the likes of detroit? Florida is not a top nhl club sorry buddy its an off season for them and reality will hit them  next season

yet here we are not in the bottom 5 ... yet 4 pts behind 2nd last having played more games ..k

They say this EVERY year. Rasmus Dahlin was supposedly the "Connor McDavid of Defensemen". Jack Hughes was "generational". So was Alexis Lafreniere. "Highly touted" doesn't mean anything at all. It's just a marketing strategy used to get dummies to watch the draft. Literally EVERY SINGLE YEAR we find out that a guy who was "highly touted" isn't as good as a guy taken 4 or 5 picks later. How "highly touted" was Elias Petersson? Or David Pastrnak? Or Nikita Kucherov? Hell, Connor McDavid was the most "highly touted" prospect since Crosby and he's not even the best center on his own team.

Some of those guys will be traded, but some won't. Either way, you're falling into the same logic trap as the other guy, which is that Yzerman's only way to make the team competitive is to keep cycling through guys year after year looking for upgrades via the draft. I don't see that as the case. At a certain point we'll have enough picks and good prospects to make impact trades. Similarly as we continue to improve our chances of landing free agents improves as well.

My guess is that Yzerman didn't give Larkin the "C" just to trade him. I just don't see it. I think he plans to build around Larkin, Seider, Raymond and probably whomever else he takes this year. I doubt he's looking to the draft  2 or 3 seasons from now as building blocks considering by the time those players hit the NHL guys like Seider will be as much older to them as Larkin is to him. The rest of the guys on your list will be trade bait or depth. If we land a top talent later in the first round (a la Kopitar or Necas or Pasternak or Kuznetsov etc. etc. etc.) great, if one becomes available for trade (a la Seguin or PLD) we'll go that route.

Either way I just don't see him pursuing a strategy of losing as much as possible each year with his fingers crossed hoping to land the next Auston Mathews.

The other guy lmao

most of the guys on this team wont be here in 3-4 yrs sorry to burst your bubble man ... fabbri is gone next deadline and vrana is next

only guys currently on the team that have a shot of being here in 3-4 yrs are larkin/bertuzzi/hronek/zadina/glendening ... thats it .... you cant see that, not my problem

i do personally think larkin will be dealt eventuallu and seider will be named captain , whether that happens or not time will tell . If he stays or goes wouldnt shock me either way

Lemme guess, you have faith in Laine because he was "highly touted"? Something tells me that if Laine had the EXACT same career, but was drafted 35th overall you wouldn't have so much faith in him.

Yes they say this EVERY year .... yakupov was the enxy mcdavid , hischier was highly touted ... whos the next mdavid this year?

why you s***ting on dahlin? Kids been putting up 45 pts as a kid on the sabres for yrs ...dmen dont put up 70-85 pts

already giving up on lafraniere i see .....your hilarious your cherry picking guys who got picked in  later rounds who became stars as if its easy to get those guys . How about all the countless guys who got drafted and became nothing? Its alot more likely we end up in that scenario

Now your gonna s*** on mcdavid and try to argue draisaitl is better to make your points? Lmao ok man

ok this was fun ... this topic is getting completely off subject , might as well close it since we’re clearly not gonna agree with anyones posts ... regardless what anyone thinks about the draft the redwings wont make the post season next year and will be near the bottom

Sure Laine can score 40 again. But not with the support he currently has (or lack thereof).

If you have paid attention this season, you'd see Detroit has played the top teams in the division very well. They are like .500 against Carolina. Beat Tampa a couple times after having not done so in years. So no, these teams aren't at the top from "beating up on Detroit". If anything, they'd have even BETTER records if they didn't lose games to a team like Detroit.

You're also ignoring the fact that the team went on a 8 game losing streak early in the season when a bunch of guys were out with Covid. Other teams had games postponed when that happened. Still not bottom 5.

Once again, I'm not saying they absolutely will not finish bottom 5 next year. I just think it's more likely that they improve upon this season than regress.

Because getting 36 and 44 goals in his first few seasons means jack s*** now right? Something tells me your just spewing any bs out of your ass

I don't disagree. But that's why I highlighted our "timeline". I agree we will certainly hit critical mass at some point, when we can start to add large free agents and make impact trades for needs. But I think most on the board would just disagree with me on when that point will come. I hear within 2-3 seasons. I tend to think 3-5 will be the very earliest. And in the meantime I'm content to make low risk low impact moves and build upon our draft fortunes by selling players.

In 5 seasons the next crop of draft picks (the first round of Yzer picks) will all be 23-26. With Seider and Berggren at the older end, and this years picks at the low end. I'm more or less looking at that general point in time to start radically shifting team build strategy. By that time Guys like Vrana/Bertuzzi/Fabbri will be entering their 30s. I think it's only inevitable that most are traded within this 3-5 season window if I'm sticking with my projection for the teams window.

All that is being said here is that you're just as likely to get an impact player at #10 than you are to get a McDavid level prospect at #1, and that more often than not, a player drafted 5-10 ends up being better than the hyped #1.

You know florida isnt a top team right? Doesnt matter if we played some good games against rb and carolina thats bound to happen when you play eachother 10 times in a season .... next season we’ll have to face the likes of toronto, boston again etc..

we’ll see what happens next season

They're certainly better than you make them out to be.

The way you analyze who the Wings have to play and who they can and cannot beat makes me wonder why they bother to play the games at all.

Dude in most years years but shane wright is being highly touted as the next big star and bedard is 15 and dominating the league already ...im not talking about a regular draft year i dont know why this is hard to understand

dont know why you’d to draft 10 next year when a generational talent is there at the top along with lambert and savoie

anyways man this conversation is pointless

Draisaitl IS better than McDavid. It takes about 10 seconds of critical thinking to figure that out. He's a point per game center who's one of the top defensive centers in the league, one of the top faceoff centers in the league (and WAY better than McDavid), and doesn't get sheltered minutes (unlike McDavid). McDavid starts in the offensive zone 63% of the time (Draisaitl 53%), that's Jakub Kindl levels of sheltering.

McDavid scores marginally more, Draisaitl does EVERYTHING else better and still has elite offense.

I'm glad you focused in on this though because it's a perfect example of everything I'm saying. You're already so convinced that McDavid is better that you don't even bother to figure out whether or not it's true.

Yes your right draisaitl is better than mcdavid

31 gm’s would rather have draisaitl over mcdavid if given the choice cause kipwinger on letsgowings.com says so

LOL

Ok

How are these big stars working out for the Oilers? You also realize there is a draft lottery, right? Yzerman isn't gonna tank in hopes to have a small, and I do mean small chance at getting a Wright or Bedard calibre player. He's gonna make the best choice he can with the pick he does get, which is the right move. No GM can choose to pick first. Nor do they choose to pick 10th. 31 other teams plus a lottery have a say in that. Did you forget last year already? Historically bad season. Gets 4th pick.

If discussing hockey on a hockey forum is pointless, why are you here?

Lol, Florida is top 10 in both team offense and team defense and they're tied for second in the NHL in total points with Carolina. Both teams are in our division. Do you even bother verifying the things you say?

Obviously you need to draft good as well after your 1st rd pick and ive stated this numerous times ... just said if you want that franchise changing player itll likely have to be us depending on our first pick

Yes im aware theres a draft lottery did i say we’d win it? I just said we’ll be at the bottom of the league ... theyve changed the rules so hypothetically if we finish dead last next season we’re guaranteed savoie , if we drop 1 spot lambert ... i dont think yzerman will vastly try to improve our club and youll see kids being delayed again . We’ll see

Meant the topic posted here has gone way off the topic it was intended for

Jesus christ do you?i said it multiple times ... this seasons a mirage you keep playing the same team 10 times how the f*** do you take anything this season seriously? You think florida will be top 3 next year? Ill bet you right now they wont

If anything Florida is BETTER than advertised because of that. Three of the top five teams in the league are in our division. Six of the teams in our division would currently be in the playoffs based on points. Florida is the top team in the top division in the NHL right now. No other teams in the NHL play as many good teams, as often, as the teams in our division do and Florida is the top of that division.

One of the league's best coaches, stud goaltending, a D that can still f*** without Ekblad, and the league's most underrated center.

Yeah, a division with 3 powerhouse teams certainly can't be the top of the league. Not to mention containing a team, while underperforming now, just made the Stanley Cup Finals last year. The team expected to be last in Chicago playing way above expectations. Yup, garbage division.

You just dont get it , its not your fault

there’s a better chance of florida not gettng in the playoffs next season than getting back in the top 4 teams of the league

boston/toronto/tb can all surpass them and theres a good shot 5 teams in the metropolitan division can make the playoffs leaving them out . Have the panthers have a good season? Yes , but lets not pretend the new division formats and playing the same teams over and over had no bearing on this
