Pick any random season during Vernon's career. Make a list of the top 5 goalies in the NHL at that time. If Vernon isn't there (and he wouldn't be) he doesn't belong in the HOF.

So pick a year during V-dog's prime and give us you're totally unbiased list of "top 5 goalies" then.

Fromm 89 to 95 only Roy and Brodeur were better. Barrasso and Vernon were equals. Richter was a half-step below, Hasek and Belfour were ascending. All these guys are now in the HOF and deservingly so. Including Vernon.

Good on Vernon. I think he deserves to be in. People forget that it's the Hall of FAME and not the Hall of Really Great Careers. As the starting goalie for two very memorable Cup runs, plus the Roy fight, and a really solid career on top of that, I think he fits the bill.

I've said it before - until now there's been a different set of standards when it comes to goalies elected into the HoF...When you think of HoF netminders - guys instantly pop into your head like Roy, Brodeur, Hasek, and Belfour...But keep in mind guys like Ciccarelli, Andreychuk, and Gartner had also been elected.

Many may not realize it, but from 1993 Billy Smith to 2003 Grant Fuhr there were not any goalies elected into the HoF..

All that said - I'm hoping Ozzie gets his due; while not having the Vezina/Selke awards to help his case he certainly has the wins, longevity.  and Stanley Cups.

People always knock Osgood by saying "he played behind a dynasty team" but I think that's even more true of Smith and Fuhr and nobody seems to think they don't belong in the HoF

Indeed.

How many 'bad' teams did Roy, Belfour, Brodeur, and Hasek play on?

Osgood had played well while on the Isles and Blues...Just not any personal hardware unlike others mentioned above.

Hasek played on quite a few mid Sabres teams

I want Ozzy to get in as much as the next guy... but Howard could have replicated what Ozzy did under the same circumstances.

If you wouldnt HOF Howie you shouldnt HOF Ozzy. And thats why its about the hardware.

Computer... simulate goalie flame war circa 2007. And computer, turn all foul language prohibitors... off

Goalies have up and down years. Several goalies most people have never heard of have Vezinas. Vernon was a good, but not elite goalie. Only elite goalies should get in. Putting him at the same level as Roy, Brodeur, Hasek is a joke. He was never that good.

Vernon's 2 Cups were with a President's Trophy winner in 89 and a 97 Wings team who. despite being a 3 seed, were a more rounded team than their previous 2 1 seeds.

Goalies make up a greater percentage of Hall of Famers than they do NHL rosters. They are well represented.

The HoF is just not for NHL'ers - it's for the entire sport including women and Euro league players.

Vernon, Barrasso, and others such as Osgood, and Cujo are the Pierre Turgeon, Andreychuk, Ciccarrelli, Recchi, Iginla, Sundin, Gartner, etc.

No greater hardware than the three Stanley Cup rings Osgood has on his mantle.
