Wildcard Race, Detroit vs. Everybody (literally)

It's essentially a make-or-break situation for Detroit. This race is incredibly close and they have wasted 10 points in the last 5 games—games that were within their reach. Can Smith and Mrazek provide the necessary depth and experience? Or will they simply be press box warmers who indulge in hoagie snacks? I don't care if we lose in the first round; I want to make the playoffs. I am exhausted by lottery picks and the disappointment of missing the playoffs.

I think if we lose this one it's almost time to fold the tents of this circus of a season.

Bring up kids get them some experience and start looking at dropping to get a better pick.  I don't understand its about the same time the last 3 years we have a meltdown.

Two different coaches, different players etc is there something happening to the water in Detroit causing the issue?

Thing is, if this is the game to decide the season they should've sold all the vets Friday and let more of the kids play now. They already had a 4 game skid before the TDL, Washington would've been a tough game even if they were on a 4 game win streak.

Mrazek is good depth and Smith is probably better and has more experience than Veleno. I'm hoping they just decide to "play ******* hockey" again and fight hard until it's over. There's 38 points available until the end of the season. Other than Ottawa, those other teams really didn't do much to be "in" for the playoffs. We have to hope that we can heat up again and Columbus and Montreal cool hit a snag like we're in. My thing is, you acquired players to see if they can help get you into the playoffs. They better play until we know if that answer is yes or no. If they're going to sit out, why acquire them at all? They aren't helping them from the stands. Yzerman obviously thought this could help, or he would've sold off players for only picks, and not depth, so they better damn play.

Don't perceive my "depression" over this skid as giving totally up but the storm clouds are gathering on the horizon. I wouldn't expect Mrazek and Smith to pull us across the line be happy to be wrong but.... I am more disappointed at the players that have been here done that said the same things the last couple of years. Then go out and have the same blah performance or zero fire after things go south like against the Caps.

No, no, no, I am not saying you are wrong, I am saying that if they lose tonight and decide to pull the plug, they may as well have pulled the plug on Friday instead of waiting only 2 more games. It's too late to sell, so they really can't just bring up more kids to play instead of the vets because there are roster limits. They could totally afford to bring up a couple kids, but the roster is full and they'd have to waive players to make room. That is why we lost Fischer for free. I would be fine if we could still trade a player for at least a pick, but I don't want to lose anyone for free via waivers. We sit at 23/23 right now. Anybody left on our team right now, who would have to clear waivers, probably wouldn't...except for maybe Holl and Lagesson. I wouldn't mind giving Wallinder or Buium a shot if we waived one of those two back to GR.

Aaah gotcha! Consider my brain damage from the time change...LOL

Exposing Holl on waivers and bringing someone from GR is that all bad? Wouldn't we shed cap and perhaps get a look at both the guys you mentioned

A few teams close to us conceded their seasons just before the TDL.   Bruins, Islanders and Rangers.   We're in a different place ATM.

Ownership is not fully on board and SY is probably hearing about lost playoff revenue while trying to hold the owners hand regarding the build vs silly decisions that help the now and hurt the later.

Even if we tank now, we can't get a better pick since other teams have already embraced it.   Cheers?

We wouldn't need to shed cap, they'd both fit under the current available, but we'd definitely have to make a spot available for one or both of them. Holl and Lagesson are good choices if Yzerman wants to see if either of those guys can play with the adults.

Steve Dangle. STEVE ******* DANGLE. Said today on his podcast that he hopes Yzerman remains the Wings GM for a long time... bc of what a s*** job he's done.

This front office has become exhausting.

Any Wings GM not named Yzerman would have been fired by now. Seriously digest that.

He's so conservative and risk adverse it's hurting us. 2 guys he passed on that Ottawa took on won the game the other night... Cozens and Ullmark

Tampa was like fun money for him. Now that he's back with "sacred" Detroit he's fully adopted the Holland method.

At first glance, Cozens looks pretty good with the Sens.   I just can't come up with any comparable deal that I would be happy with, acquiring him.    Norris is a really good player with injury  concerns that were obviously taken into account in this deal.

Wasted thoughts on what price we would have had to pay?
