LeftWinger 5,191 Report post Posted January 12 Not sure who is watching, but this was so long coming! I never ONCE felt ANY ill will towards Sergei. He, along with Probert will always be my favorite Detroit Red Wings! Congrats Sergei! 4 Dabura, Rick D, town123 and 1 other reacted to this
kipwinger 8,818 Report post Posted January 13 It was a really cool moment for the team, organization, fans, and Sergei too. I think it went well overall and didn’t drag on too long. Sergei was the man, and for a few years there was the best player on earth. He’s got all the accolades and awards. He’s got the Cups. It was always coming and it’s cool they finally did it. He’s an indelible part of the history of the organization. 4 Dabura, Rick D, Motor City Mullets and 1 other reacted to this
Rick D 404 Report post Posted January 13 I was 9 when Sergei was drafted, and I was just starting to really get into hockey; he was the coolest player to me. I met him a few years later at an autograph signing at Gibraltar trade center and I can still remember how excited I was to meet him while I was waiting in line. Essentially for me, this is where it all started. I'm really excited his number is finally in the rafters where it belongs. 3 town123, kipwinger and Dabura reacted to this

White skates instead of yellow laces and a visor, but he was a rockstar and the dude every kid wanted to look/play like. 2 Dabura and Rick D reacted to this

Yeah well I met Yzerman at Carl's Golf Land when I was like 8, and now he's like king of the red wings, so stick that in your pipe and smoke it 1 1 Rick D and Dabura reacted to this
Dabura 12,238 Report post Posted January 13 Arguably the most complete player to ever play the game. I get crap from all sides every time I say that, but the only thing the dude didn't do was throw hands twice a week. And you know what? He probably would've excelled at that too! Sergei made hockey cool. He's why I started playing hockey. I was never a particularly good hockey player, but I could skate like nobody's business. Why? Because I wanted to skate like Sergei Fedorov. Talk about "selling the sport" and "growing the game"! Anyway, this was long overdue and it's nice to get some closure, for lack of a better word. Long live the good old days! 2 hours ago, Jimmybigrigs69 said: Yeah well I met Yzerman at Carl's Golf Land when I was like 8, and now he's like king of the red wings, so stick that in your pipe and smoke it I randomly met Dino Ciccarelli at a golf thing. Wasn't even in Detroit. I was like "Are you Dino Ciccarelli?" And he was like "Yeh." Profound. 5 Rick D, Jimmybigrigs69, Motor City Mullets and 2 others reacted to this

One time me n a buddy were walking in downtown Grand Rapids early in the morning. There's a guy like an entire block away from us. Friend: I think that's Dan Clearly Me: that's not Dan Clearly Friend: HEY CLEARY! *Man turns and looks at us* (It's clearly Dan Clearly) *Awkward pause* Friend: ...FUCQ YOU! *Man turns away and continues walking* Profound Edited January 14 by Jimmybigrigs69 1 Dabura reacted to this

As a kid in metro Detroit in the 90s the coolest thing you could own was a Fedorov jersey. Equipping that gave your character like +75 charisma with other child NPCs. I found a Lidstrom jersey in my loot box. So I will always be bitter towards Fedorov and how much cooler his jersey made you then lamewad Lidstroms did. 2 Rick D and Dabura reacted to this

Shanny thought he was gonna leap frog managing and become the big dick exec of the biggest team, now he can't find a job and has to ask his captain permission to enter the suite and scout for free. What Toronto does to folks. Anyway since we're sharing player stories. My buddies mom sold Shannys home in Detroit. She said he had a large unfinished basement to store the mountains of Shanahan trading cards he had, and a single cot in that basement, which is where he would sleep alone on the nights before games. 1 Rick D reacted to this

Cot? Was he some sort of superstitious type, felt he needed to be punished by sleeping downstairs in a rather meager way, or was that for his Vietnamese side puzzy? Was there a jug for urine and feces too? 2 hours ago, Jimmybigrigs69 said: Anyone else notice Jimmy D failed to attend or even do a prerecorded message...? Was there a jug for urine and feces too? I assume it's just a mental prep thing. Sleeping on an uncomfortable cot in a cold dark basement alone makes you tougher, want it more. You earn going back to your California king and hot babe wife by enduring and winning. Athletes are weird, but that's what makes them good. Psychology in sports is huge. Often the mentally tougher, more confident, more determined man, wins when ur at that high of a level. Anything you can do to gain that edge, however weird, you do. Jimmybigrigs69 572 Report post Posted January 15 (edited) 4 hours ago, Motor City Mullets said: Strange - he was a primary reason for getting here. Well Mike Illitch, Ken Holland, and Jim Devellano are the ones Feds betrayed/burned when he left. Mike is dead, Holland is gone, and Devellano's job is rumored to be a no-show job at this point. It's no surprise that the orgs attitude has now shifted to positive on Feds. So Jimmy Ds job could be so no-show that a speech or attendance wasn't even attempted, but I'm willing to bet he refused. Why wouldn't we as fans want to hear from the guy who was so instrumental in recruiting Feds early on? Jimmy was likely the only one to object to retiring Feds number and didn't attend out of protest IMO... Edited January 15 by Jimmybigrigs69
Jimmybigrigs69 572 Report post Posted January 15 (edited) Also - I've shared this before - but I have a very good friend who is socially connected through friends to tigers president Scott Harris. Scott's complaint about Chris Illitch is that Chris is cheap (won't let him spend money on the team) and operates the tigers like a business instead of going all in for worlds series wins. You know Chris is running the wings the same way. Mike was the opposite of this. Obviously a good businessman as well, but he saw the value in spending more for titles. Not just extracting short term revenue. This Feds retirement reeks of business. The 5 game package. The flip of attitude. The fan appeasement. Everything. The cold hard truth is 91 got retired for the money and bc yzerman was his buddy. If Mike and Jimmy lived forever it would never happen out of principle.
