#2360993 2/24 GDT : Canucks 3 at Red Wings 8

Most exciting and best win of the season for the Red Wings. Loved their effort and determination on the second night of a back-to-back against a real quality opponent. Special teams seem to be improving lately, which is positive going forward.

Tatar and Andersson have to stay. That third line right now with Eaves is fun to watch. I know they probably won't once the healthy bodies start coming back, but I think they have both proven to be NHL ready and productive no less.

Brunner just shoots from everywhere, something the team has lacked since Hossa really. He's blowing my expectations completely out of the water so far. Nice to see that natural goal-scorer wearing red and white.

This team is a roller coaster, but the highs have been quite entertaining so far. They can compete with anyone when they want to.

This has been the most exciting game of the season so far.

Red Wings are buzzing. Great energy having played yesterday. Kill off the penalty and keep on them in the third.

The officiating is horrible.

If anything, we need more guys like Tootoo. It's not like the Red Wings are overwhelming teams with skill these days.

Derek Dorsett calling another hockey player irrelevant is hilarious. He's such a clown.

#2359291 How much of the current trouble is attributable to injuries?

Posted by GoWings1905 on 22 February 2013 - 08:09 AM

I would say the injuries have been impactful, but by no means completely to blame. I thought going into the season this was maybe a 6-8 seed team if things went right. Needless to say, almost nothing outside of a couple players has gone well and now it appears just getting in at all will be quite challenging.

I think the biggest problem in relation to the injuries is the sheer number of them. A couple at a time you can maybe survive, but 7-9 guys out on average is unbelievable and would be tough to overcome for even more talented teams. For the Red Wings, it has completely put players in positions and roles where they don't belong.

Helm, Franzen and Smith are major losses IMO. With even just those three playing, I think it puts the Red Wings closer to in the playoffs than out. One of Bertuzzi or Samuelsson being healthy would be nice too since Babcock won't use Tatar in the top-six and either of those two is better than Cleary and Abdelkader. Granted, that's why you don't rely on multi-year contracts to spare part veterans to fill important roles.

Overall, I don't see the Red Wings making the playoffs without some good fortune in the health department very soon. Even if that's the case, I doubt they get out of the first round anyways. Being a borderline mediocre playoff team is the worst spot to be in the parity driven NHL. The Red Wings have a lot of work to do this summer/years ahead attempting to infuse some new talent onto the roster and creating an identity going forward.

Don't even feel bad about the loss. Just watching Datsyuk tonight was enough for me.
Babcock has got to wake up sooner or later though. Had he started the 4-on-4 OT with Datsyuk+Z/Tatar we would have probably won the game.

Definitely agree. I figured Z would be with Brunner, but to use Cleary with Datsyuk isn't acceptable at all. Tatar, Filppula, Eaves. Anybody else but Cleary.

The most frustrating part was seeing the Red Wings completely control play in the third and then Nashville gets two rather flukey goals after generating nothing at all. Pretty fortunate win for them and kind of fitting for the Red Wings fortunes lately with injuries and breaks.

They will win most nights with that type of effort. However, they have to do it more consistently now. The halfway point is quickly approaching.

Datsyuk 4-on-4 for all five minutes would be superb. Watch Babs have him out there with Cleary and he'll get caught in the Nashville zone leading to an odd-man rush the other way.

Wings are playing hard and inspired hockey. Could have threw it in after the rough first period or falling behind 3-2.

I hope they get the second point they deserve.

Get Tatar with Datsyuk. What is Babcock doing? Stack the top line if you are going to waste Datsyuk with those two.

Only down a goal is not a bad outcome at all after that. Multiple injuries, four penalties and some questionable lines.

Datsyuk was insane. Such a treat to watch.

Pavel Datsyuk is having an unbelievable period of hockey. If you can get Cleary a goal, things are really going well.

Kindl takes penalty number three. White needs to find some different sticks or a new team would be even better.

Why is Cleary always on the ice? There is an abundance of capable and better PK options in the bottom-six.

Oh great, another injury.

#2357180 No need to panic

Posted by GoWings1905 on 17 February 2013 - 11:41 PM

I'm not going to panic. This team is about what I expected so far: average and wildly inconsistent. They will probably be fighting for a playoff spot all season and won't advance far, should they get in at all.

It's somewhat easier to swallow if you can just accept that our hockey team is mediocre. Trust me, it's frustrating to admit at times personally, but I think realistically most of us saw this coming. The expectations in this city are insanely high and rightfully so given the standards of success this organization has achieved recently.

Watching Z, Datsyuk and Brunner now is fun at least. I want management to give the kids an expanded role the rest of this season to see what we have for the future. These Red Wings are not championship quality and Cleary, Samuelsson and Bertuzzi have no place in years to come. At least they shouldn't if the front office would embrace playing some prospects more.

It would be nice to see what a healthy roster could accomplish. However, I still have my doubts of their ceiling as they won one playoff game last year with Lidstrom and Stuart around. There are parts I like about this group of players, but it seems to be overall severely lacking an identity and the rest of the league has caught up or surpassed Detroit in the skill department.

This off-season will be crucial. I don't think there needs to be a complete rebuild, but some significant retooling has to take place if the Red Wings want to seriously contend in the near future again.

Three straight losses to rookie goalies. Just can't put 60 minutes together, but not entirely surprising considering the injuries and lack of talent mostly.

No reason for Samuelsson and Cleary (or Bertuzzi) to be playing in the top-six on this team. Let the young kids get an expanded role the rest of the season and see what we have for the future.

Z, Pavel and Brunner all on one line is a catch 22. The third line played well, but where else does the scoring from? I haven't seen Filppula do anything for awhile besides pinch poorly for the third goal tonight.
