#2524580 Detroit re-signs Gustavsson 1 yr $1.85 mill

Posted by frankgrimes on 19 June 2014 - 11:41 AM

The hype for Mrazek is funny the guy hasn't done anything worthwhile at the NHL level and yet people are already making him the next starter. Reminds a lot on a certain guy named Jacob Markström.

In 11 games in the nhl, he has a 1.8 gaa and a .926 sv%
And obviously he has been great in the ahl also

There are a lot of guys who have done well over such a small period of time but I think you really need to see a bigger picture like 30 games for two seasons to really get a better evaluation

#2524567 Compliance buyout expected to be used on Tootoo

Posted by frankgrimes on 19 June 2014 - 11:07 AM

I think teams should have to pay 100 % of a players contract if they decide to buy them out, it doesn't count against the cap and the players would have a little more security.

Also the Tootoo situation is a bad one, I've always been against this signing saying that I'm really wondering what Holland and Babcock expected out of this guy ? If you bring in someone like Tootoo you should expect energy, a scrap here and there and some decent low ice time minutes nothing more. Hopefully he can sign somewhere else and retool his career there.

I'm really starting to think that this front office has a false idea of what a fourth line should and shouldn't be.

Nothing but the best of luck for him.

Weiss can't be bought out because the deal was sadly signed after the new CBS otherwise perfect candidate.

I think Holland might also want to re-sign him in order to push Howard to be better. Without the monster this team doesn't make the playoffs so having two capable goalies is not the worst thing in the world.

#2524517 Shawn Thornton will not be returning to the Bruins

Posted by frankgrimes on 19 June 2014 - 04:17 AM

If they are facing the enforcer out and let the rats ruin the show, hockey will become like soccer on ice = unwatchable.

It's funny how often Thornton gets called a goon, the guy has skill and brings a lot of energy, leadership teams like the Oilers should be lining up to get him and his leadership. He could do some huge guidance for Gazdic or join the Flames and build the toughest 4 line in the NHL with McGrattan and Westgarth. There is potential for him that's for sure. Guy will be in the NHL next year and thanks god this game needs more not less players like him.

It's also funny, when the team with the softest fourth line in the league is talking about wasting a roster spot on someone like Thornton. For years now our so called fourth line has been a joke compared to the ones from Boston, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Kings heck even Chicago has a more physical fourth line.

Mark my words Chiarelli will regret this decision as soon as the Leafs are rolling into B-town. Would love to see a reinnovation of a grind line and the bash brothers but I also know it wont happen.

#2524230 Eaves is OUT in Nashville

Posted by frankgrimes on 17 June 2014 - 12:28 PM

Eaves seems to be in that tough position where he's not physical enough to be a consistent 4th liner (including injuries), and not skilled enough to play on a 3rd line. He's got really high IQ on the PK, but he's had such terrible luck getting hurt. I wish the guy nothing but the best.

I feel terrible for him the guy deserves to play an injury free season and show the teams what he can do. Maybe he should put on a few more pounds in order to become a physical fourth liner.

#2524062 Avalanche are taking Ryan O'Reilly to club-selected arbitration

Posted by frankgrimes on 16 June 2014 - 04:45 PM

Just to be clear...ROR isn't getting paid 6.5 million because he is worth that.  He got that because Feaster tried his best to screw Colorado and make it an undesirable contract.

It was backloaded so his minimum qualifying offer has to be at least 6.5 million.  Colorado is doing their best to correct the situation.  Which makes complete sense.

How does it make sense? Arbiration is only accomplishing one thing: pissing off the player endlessly do you think Weber signed the enormous offersheet because he wanted to remain a Predator after they took their captain and best player to arbitration? Hardly.

From a business point of view the Avalanche are doing the right thing but hockey is bigger than business, there are also things like relationships, integrity and honesty. If that bridge is burned now O'Reilly will walk at the earliest option and have at least 20 teams offering him the moon. He knows it, his agent knows it  so the Avalanche aren't doing themselves any favors here.

#2523947 Wings sign Tomas Nosek to 2 year entry level deal

Posted by frankgrimes on 15 June 2014 - 03:00 PM

Oh, that doesn't mean I don't care about identification and/or local heroes. In fact quite the opposite is true. If look up the standings of my favorite soccer club Werder Bremen (I come from the area around Bremen) you can tell I don't cheer for them because I only care for points or success.

OT: Really Werder Bremen? Ever since they took the championship away from Bayern Munich I've liked them back in the days. For me it is always about the mixture I want to see local boys, some national veterans and foreigners - but not more than a handful -  who can help the club win and teach the young players on what it takes to become succesful at "the next stage".

North American hockey is pretty thoroughly scouted. Even though there are a good collection of scouts on every team looking worldwide, homegrown gems are much more difficult to go unnoticed than someone overseas. Like Paulwoodsfan said, there's no local talent that hasn't been unearthed yet.

Ya I guess a team like the Wings has a lot of scouts everywhere and if there is no local talent available it is sad but can't change that. The question now is, what did Fisher - who I really love as a scout - see in this kid? Don't know if his old club was good or just average but if the guy can translate his game into the NA style he could be a nice stopgap for the Rapids, till the younger kids are ready. Like I said nothing against him :-)

It's a free chance to get another rooster player maybe even more in a couple of years so there is nothing wrong with this signing. Well done Red Wings.

As for the homegrown thing : It's what annoys me most about European soccer fans. That kind of thing what I call " local nationalism", that can be felt underneath the surface of most soccer games and ultimately leads to the infamous riots during and after the game. Why does it matter from where someone is from as long as he plays for the team you're cheering for ?

Since you are from Europe too I am annoyed by the exact opposite. Fans who don't care about identification and local heroes, same goes for nationalism there is nothing wrong with wanting to be proud of your club by expecting less foreigners and more homegrown boys, especially in soccer where everyone knows there are around 8 clubs worldwide who will get the best of the best.. People who only want to see points, points and success at all costs are the typical gloryhunters and event fans who have helped turning European soccer into what it is today, a business first industry, suit driven industry instead of a sport. In short not even worth watching, following anymore

As for VM;

I fully expect our scouts - who are one of the best in the business - to also look at Michigan boys but there really is a pattern with the Wings and all I expect is a different mixture of players. I know this worked great when others where behind the curve but nowadays almost every team has scouts worldwide so finding gems is a lot tougher. Maybe the kid will be good maybe not but personally I would have prefered another Dekeyser story just at the center position this time.

like you said I think it would be important for Michigan boys to have that special feeling come draft time. I mean every kid dreams of playing for their local club once they are on the cusp of becoming pros.

Nothing against him and my local team has done something similar and I hated it. Why not give the job to good ol Michigan boy ? I think the Wings are running the risk of becoming a very european dominated organisation, where are - save for Dekeyser - are the upcoming local heroes?

Well no more cups for la... 2 is enough

I have nothing against them and to be honest they could be on the verge of becoming a dynasty soon, the team has it all:

elite goaltending - check
elite defense - check
elite two way center - check
physicality, toughness and size - check

Lombardi has done an unbelievable job this team was destinated after beating the sharks being down 0:3

#2523507 Quebec City getting new arena

Posted by frankgrimes on 11 June 2014 - 12:13 PM

Sorry but I don't agree with that, three lockouts failed expansions and focusing on non fans instead of fans, games in Europe, destroying the ASG and now WC. Donald Fehr is great at his job just look at the MLB salary cap and the league isn't playing oversees.

I agree with the whole teams in non-hockey markets. It's crap and a waste of time and money. But there are plenty of fans over here in europe……...

And MLB doesn't have a cap, they have a luxury tax, which is the most ineffective thing I've ever seen. Still allows for salaries to drive further and further north. It's crazy.

Oh OK my bad then but I love that system its the perfect bridge between a cap and open spending

Under the current conditions we are going to see a team in Uganda before Canada is getting another one..

Quite a few actually. The announcers give him so much praise based off past success even after he lets in 4-5 goals, which he has done quite a bit. Yes he has stolen some games, but he is nowhere near the level he is capable of.

A key point being that Quick has shown up huge in absolute must win games most of the time.  The Kings, in general, show up in monster games.  That's what makes them an elite team.
Even on some of his off days, 29 other NHL teams would be glad to have Quick in the net.  Course I would take just about anyone off that Kings roster.

To me it seems like the Kings have some sort of playoff switch and once that one is turned on good luck stopping Kopistar and company

#2523447 Report: NHL to have 5 outdoor games in 2014-15.

Posted by frankgrimes on 11 June 2014 - 02:53 AM

Last time I've looked I found out Brasil has a worldcup going somewhere in July maybe we can have a brasil classic next...

I think part of the WC flair  has always been the outdoor conditions and going back to your earliest childhood memories in terms of snow, weather and difficulties. The NHL is running the risk or ruining the former Star and turning it into a cashcow. Have the big one every two years and make it more about the sport itself than all that bohowaboho event styled "main event" this isn't the WCW.
