#2534468 Lines Thread

Checking is something a player need to learn too and especially the Wings could use a forward with some grit. Mantha got the tools so yeah if he doesn't make the top 6, let him try a bottom 6 role and then send him down after 9 games.there is really no harm in that.

#2534388 Holland signs 4 year extension with wings **MOD Warning Post 130**

Seriously Frank? Whether people like to admit it or not Alfie and Weiss were two of the biggest guys last year.

Oh you meant a player of Hossa's stature?  Yeah they don't hit UFA status anymore.  Parise and Suter were the last ones and 1 team out of 30 got them for hometown reasons.

Who exactly are these Hossa-calibre players we're missing out on??

Also, you couldn't be more wrong about our prospect pool.  Nothing past Pulkkinen??  My god man....  I can't tell if you're trolling or just that blinded by your pessimism.

Mantha, Athanasiou, Janmark, Nosek, Nastasiuk, Larkin, Turgeon, Bertuzzi

If that's nothing then I want a whole lot more of nothing...

I've said CENTER prospects after Pulkinnen. Larkin can play either center or left wing and till he is ready nobody will know at which position he is going to flourish.

Good god Alfie wanted to play with a bunch of Swedes - at this point in his career he is a depth player plain and simple - and thought this team would have give him a better chance than his old one, there were also reports of him being pissed about the lowball offer from the Senators.  Weiss top UFA seriously ? The guy came back after a serious injury and nobody knew if he would be fully recovered or not turns out, he wasn't. So till he shows huge improvements this season I wouldn't even call him a good signing save for a Hossa type of signing but maybe that doesdn't fit the rose colored blind thoughts of some..

As for missing out Niskanen, Ehrhoff ?! They may not be Hossa type players but both were the by far best UFAs this year and we didn't get either one, period. So a GM can't have the luxury of stating "I don't know why they aren't coming here.." because that  means this teams future would solely depend on almost every prospect reaching their expected maximum potential and how often does that happen ? (hint the number is lower than 1...)

Holland has his work cutout for him and he better figures out how to get top UFAs to sign here otherwise this will be a looooong 4 years.

I'm so sick of that Kings argument, this was a team most people had as a cup favorite before the season. They underarchieved during the season, fired their coach and in typical kingsstyle put everything together when it counted --> playoffs. Lombardi saw flaws fixed them and brought the team two stanley cups.

With UFAs not wanting to come here, some of the prospects soon need to turn into first pairing defensemen and others are expected to at least soften the blow Pasha and soon after Zetterbergs retirement will cause this team. Also I don't buy this we are making moves once the team is ready excuses anymore, we got Hossa because he basically offered himself by signing a one year contract. Holland sadly has become very very cautious in terms of improving a team and now we are seeing more and more the results of that.

After Niskanen, Ehrhoff went elsewhere most would have been fine with staying put, creating some cap space and let the youth play and what happens ? He overpays and re-signs a borderline second pairing defenseman for 8,5 million, brings back a player who is done and will soon bring back one with another sore back and for what ? Just to keep a stupid streak alive, I gladly let the streak end if it means letting the youth play and if some don't plan out ppackage them for veteran help (not for 2 months of service....)

Even Babcock said  that the team is not going into the right direction, so sorry but I don't see the point in icing an exact same roster again and the healthy excuse more than done.

If I were Babcock I'd start looking to other teams.

I'm sure he is already putting Mario's number on speed dial.no way he now re -signs with this team and I really don't blame him his job is getting harder and harder each year

I don't think so their owner is loaded with money and is their version of our own Mr. I. Their rebuild is exactly how should be done create a new core and add to it through the draft. Mark my words Buffal is going to be a damn scary game in a few years.

#2533156 Tatar Signs 3 Year Deal $2.75 mill AAV

Posted by frankgrimes on 28 July 2014 - 01:37 PM

It may only be retaining a player we certainly should have retained, but this is still very good news.  It's easy to forget the time when Tatar was buried in GR and getting frustrated.  He's a talented young scorer that we have locked up for 3 years of what will be his peak physical ability.  And if he becomes a perennial 25 or possibly 30-goal scorer, he'll be worth well in excess of $3 million per year by the end of this deal, so I won't lose too much sleep over whether or not this feels like an "overpay" when the cap hit comes out.

Couldn't care less either I'm just happy we have him locked up for 3 more years. If he can score around 20 - 25 goals annually that would be absolutely fantastic - to quote 'Babs :) -

#2532893 Dekeyser signed. 2 yrs $2.187 million AAV

Posted by frankgrimes on 23 July 2014 - 02:37 PM

Do you really see him ever topping out with something similar to Girardi's peripheral stats, though? Even if DD had the extra 10 or so pounds that Girardi has, I'm not sure he'll ever throw a ton of hits.
I really think he's comparable to Marc-Eduard Vlasic - which, coincidentally, would also be good for us.
I'd LOVE for him to add 15-20 points of muscle in the next few seasons and use his weight better, but I'm not sure he will. Now I just wanna see a monster DeKeyser, making strong tape-to-tape passes and hammering the other team's forwards.

I'd agree about the hits, but I'd also say that it's hard to gauge his willingness to use the body because he's so light right now.  Increase his weight (which will surely happen) and he may well develop that part of his game as he's got the skating ability necessary to be a hitter in the league.  I'm convinced his relative inexperience and skinniness keep those hit numbers down (for now).

If he tops out as either Vlasic or Girardi that would be fantastic just wait till he bulks up and his hits will arrive.

#2532728 'District Detroit': Red Wings' New Arena Details Released

Posted by frankgrimes on 21 July 2014 - 05:00 PM

Guys and girls let's not overreact here.

Don't get me wrong I would love such a beautiful arena with all the lighting and colloseeum like seating but so far these are only pictures of the project. When it comes down to actually building it nobody knows if they aren't going to chance some things here and there just to get it done in time etc.

I honestly believe there should and can't be any discussion about the name, it has to be named after an ex player or even more deservingly about the guy who turned this franchise around from top to bottom, our very own Mr. Mike I. I love the term ICE (Ilitch Center of Entertainment) Arena :-)

#2532486 Babcock Interview on 105.1 this morning

Posted by frankgrimes on 18 July 2014 - 01:27 PM

The thing with Babcock is, he has proven at every level that he cares about his players so I really believe that. When guys like Weber, Crosby and Toews are talking that highly about another coach that has to mean something.

As for his contract situation I think he is downplaying it a bit which is the right thing to do don't get me wrong. Others have mentioned it already what incentive does he have to sign here longterm? Holland is making his job more difficult every year, this roster hasn't improved since 2009 and once Godström retired things went even more on the downside. You just have to look at last season this roster had no business making the playoffs and yet the kids stole the show and somehow Babcock and the boys managed to still do it. This season looks like it may be the exact same roster just one year older so the job for Babcock is (again) more difficult. Why would he deal with that, if he could coach guys like Backes, Statsny, Schwarz, Pietrangelo (having Reeves to stick up for his stars), Crosby, Malkin all soon to be or in their primes ? Super Mario and Burke will pony up whatever amount of cash it takes to lure him to the Pens.

If the Wings are missing the playoffs this season I think heads will roll (Holland) and Babcock will be looking for a better opporunity. Don't get me wrong I'd love him to stay but it i clear the direction of this team isn't going the right way, the center depth is almost non existant and nobody knows if Marchenko won't return to the KHL or if Sproul can be that long needed RH offensive d man.

Putting myself into his shoes I would really prefer to see how the season - including the Trade Deadline - goes and then decide if I'm still willing to adapt to an ever increasing challenging, when I have the opportunity to coach young superstars on other teams with a brighter future. People who aren't appreciating him now will do so once we are facing a Babcock coached team and our new coach even its Blashill get's absolutely schooled and outcoached.

I love his answer about not wanting to be coached and I fully agree with it, if people really don't want to be fairly pushed and coached to become better players then Detroit isn't the place for them. That being said I don't think guys like Ehrhoff or Niskanen are afraid of that they sadly saw better opportunities elsewhere or our offers weren't good enough.

#2532310 Alfie wants to play

Posted by frankgrimes on 17 July 2014 - 02:51 AM

Nothing shocks me any more...well, I guess I'd be surprised if this team excites me at all next season.

Like I said at least sign an enforcer to make the games more entertaining and protect our two superstars + young players.  But overall yeah I agree this could very turn into the exact same roster which got embarassed against the Bruins and barely made the playoffs just one year older and with teams now knowing how to play against Nyquist, Tatar...

Nashville has a lot of tools in place, although I don't think Laviolette is the right choice and Ribeiro is well a locker room cancer...anyway I believe this is Poiles last chance to save his job

#2532195 Red Wings & the Media

Posted by frankgrimes on 15 July 2014 - 07:24 PM

I consider myself a big fan of the Red Wings but knowledgable - like this blogger is pushing it - would put it way too far. Anyway, after reading news how the Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Philadelphia and Boston are handling their players I can understand why organisations don't want to give too much out.

The only point I somewhat agree is that the team and especially management aren't taking critics very well, as proven by an Email from a poster here a few days ago.

But the media has to understand one thing: The job of a hockey organisation is to ice the best possible roster, players are paid to perform on the ice not to be media-monkeys.  Putting myself into Kessel's shoes I would have declined every interview with a Torontosun reporter till they are accepting that I'm shy and don#t want to talk to them, till then no comments no interviews.

Sometimes the media thinks they are way more important when in reality they aren't even important.

btw. for the 24/7 stuff the media considered it "boring" boohoo down to earth hockey players acting like always, so no forced stories or Bryzgalovs quotes for you ? Cry me a river, I thought the insight about Babcocks decisions and how he reacts to pressure have been outstanding.

#2532079 preds prospects Viktor Arvidsson and Kevin Fiala shootout moves

Lol, I'm acutally Swiss and even I think that this is not a big deal...for sure not worth to post it here...

Fiala is not NHL-ready. Needs at least one more year in Sweden. Pretty sure he'll return.

Then don't read it, problem solved.

PredsFan is providing a lot of useful information and at least in my mind an absolute enrichment for this forum. Sometimes it's really nice to know what's going on with other organisations and be it just for comparisons.
