It's good to hear we've got someone just about ready to come up, hopefully he'll work hard and make it. As for Ozzie, it doesn't surprise me he plans on retiring. I just hope that Babcock treats him better this season and actually lets him play in some more games. I think he wants to stick around here after he retires so maybe he'll help mentor the young guys.

    Brett Lebda signs with Toronto

If Lebda does even half-decently in Toronto, I guarantee there will be people bashing Holland for not re-signing him. Included amongst the people will likely be many of those who spent a significant amount of time bashing Lebda in the past. They'll accuse Holland of not seeing his potential; they'll accuse Babcock of using him incorrectly; they'll lament his loss and feel sorry for themselves. It'll be hilarious. Toronto doesn't even have one viable forward scoring line, and they have all of one defenseman (Kaberle) who can move the puck effectively---and that defenseman just so happens to suck at defense.

Osgood will be turning 38 this November and his contract is up after this season, so it is no surprise that people are already speculating that he will retire. I don't remember reading anywhere about Ozzie himself mentioning retirement, but he really doesn't have anything else to prove, other than perhaps wanting to win another cup before he retires. I hope he earns more playing time this season, he has a realistic shot at passing Grant Fuhr and Glenn Hall on the all-time wins list, and if he splits the starts pretty evenly with Howard, he may even catch Tony Esposito, pretty much guaranteeing himself a place in the HHOF.

Stan and Scotty Bowman have virtually nothing to do with the Stanley Cup winning roster... Dave Tallon built it, and the mess that came with it. As far as the off season, it's not a stroke of brilliance it's the obvious move to get draft picks for players. There isn't an option A B C or D... there is only an option A... shed salary, get picks in return... any GM would be doing the same thing, the best one and the worst one would have to make the same decision. No one is arguing that Scotty Bowman isn't one of the greatest minds in hockey and that his son Stan probably inherited some of that knowledge... We're just saying you can't credit, nor fault them for the Cup or the mess... let's see where Chicago is in five years before we go crowning Stan the savior of Chi-Town.

    Remaining Free Agents

Drapers usefulness is getting limited but he can still play well enough for a 4th line role. Holmstrom had 25 goals last year and to say he needs to go because he's soft is just ridiculous.

How are you dealing with the off-season?

I actually wish the Wings would win the Cup in early April; there's just way too much stuff to do in the summertime. Our TV is rarely on this time of year. This is probably an hours ride from my garage.

Take off your Homer glasses and see the facts: Chicago Blackhawks 2010 Stanley Cup Champions. Detroit Red Wings 2010 also rans. That is the Hockey's Holy Grail grabbed by the nuts. Mission accomplished. Talon, Bowman & Bowman, whoever, hockey is back in Chicago after a long, long absence. They could have farted around like Toronto and not gone anywhere and not gotten any picks in return for going no where. But instead, Chicago took the bull by the horns and won the frickin Stanley Cup. And now they have a 2010 Stanley Cup and better picks than the Wings do. The Bowman's were handed a great roster that would self destruct at the stroke of midnight after the '09-'10 season, and they are getting a lot more out of the scrap pile than anyone thought they would. A core group of awesome talent (a ton of Olympians), and some periphery players to fill in and step up. Where's the sarcasm you're hoping for? It's one thing to hate your rivals, but it's another thing to underestimate them.

After Helm and Abdelkader, the Wings do not "need" to sign any forwards. Counting Ritola, Hudler, and all returning forwards who are currently signed, the Wings have 12 forwards NOW. That means Helm and Abby push it to 14. As far as defense, the Wings have five returning defensemen signed plus Kindl. Janik is also signed and Meech will be signed soon. The longer this goes, the less likely it is Modano will be a Wing. As for the defense, unless the Wings can find a good physical, defensive type who can play well and is cheaper than Lilja was, the Wings will be going into the season with the current group.

Which ramification do you think Chicago is more afraid of. Offending Huet and POSSIBLY other free agents, or not being able to ice a competitive team due to Huet's contract? Easy choice. They will bite the bullet to have cap room over the image of honoring contracts to a fault... Hate to break it to you, but there is no honor in the way they NEED to do business even if it isn't what they want to do. They have already had to trade away half of their team that signed contracts after winning the cup, they already look bad, one more move in waiving Huet won't make them look that much worse. I hear your point about honor and image, and that there are ramifications that will affect the way that free agents look at their team, but you are over valuing that concept. When it comes down to cap compliance or honor, they need to pick cap compliance. Waiving Huet gives them a better chance to fill out their roster and ice a competitive team, plain and simple that outweighs the honor of not waiving Huet. It is a business, and that is how the decision will be made.

What does that have to do with what LeBron did to them and that organization? He was what a team could call truly their own, and they were lucky enough to draft one of their own. Maybe he shouldn't have called Lebron out like that but for every action there's a reaction. No athlete has ever held a handful of teams hostage for a couple of weeks, not telling anybody anything about what he's thinking of doing, only to air his own "special" on a joke network, and then stab a franchise and it's fans in the heart. Do you know who controlled that team? LeBron did. They asked him what he wanted and he told them who to get. They bent over backwards for him to build around him and finally bring home a championship, and the loser couldn't even deliver it when they needed a leader. He keeps them strapped this whole free agency, forcing them to not be able to sign any free agents because they have their money ready for one of their own to stay, only for him to bail on them like a coward and now all of the rest of the good free agent players are gone. He didn't even call them up personally to say thank you and goodbye, or didn't even help them to compensate with a sign and trade. LeBron became a joke, and always will be known for what he just pulled off. And I like how you call another city's fans classless. How would you feel if our most beloved athlete, say Yzerman (if hockey was even bigger than basketball or football), came straight out of metro Detroit and we drafted him as one of our very own, became an icon and all that, management kisses his ass as he demands who he wants to come play here with him, still can't deliver a championship, then when free agency hits, he holds the team hostage on his own national TV show because he's a huge egomaniac, then decides to bolt like a coward to a stacked team to make it easier for him to win a championship, basically spitting in our faces? You'd feel embarrassed and sick to your stomach, wouldn't you? Act like you wouldn't be pissed off and react out of emotion. I'm sure a few out there would burn his jersey. Come to think of it, I seem to recall how people here react to Hossa-- Pretty tasteless sometimes. Or even Fedorov. I just don't understand how people disregard what LeBron just did to them but yet call out their fans for being classless, yet most people here talk s*** about Fedorov and Hossa leaving and don't even know the whole story about why.
