Detroit Pistons (and NBA) Playoff Thread

Driving to the hoop shouldn't ALWAYS constitute a foul, the Spurs went to the line TWICE as much as Detroit last night, it should always even out at the end of the game.

Foul shooting should not always be even. Most if not all the time in an NBA game the team with the most foul shots wins the game. They do so because they get fouled at the end of the game by a team attempting a comeback or because the aggressive team created contact. When a team gets in the penalty during a quarter you become at a major disadvantage because a slasher like Ginobili can drive to the basket and create contact and get 2 free throws just by driving hard. This makes the free throw disparity look worse than it is because an offensive team can use the penalty situation as a major advantage if they have the right coach and can hit free throws.

Detroit isnt creating good contact. They are settling for jumpers or floaters in the lane. Rip is coming off of curl screens and avoiding going to the hole hard. For good reason too, he has Tim Duncan patroling the paint waiting to block his shot.

Sheed in the high post or baseline isnt going to create calls. The only guy I can think of who is physical is Billups and he is getting to the line because he isn't afraid to drive and create contact.

Tim Duncan gets to the line because he is going to take you off the dribble from the high post (elbow) or because he uses his pump fakes to draw his defender in the air down low.

Ginobili is a wild MF'r and he is going to create contact, whether that be an offensive or defensive foul.

Again, the refs arent taking the ball out of the Pistons hands and handing it to the Spurs. Detroit isn't getting good looks because the Spurs D is rotating aroud and switching on the screens, slipping the weak side defender strong side and rotating the weak side wing defender to weak side post. If the Pistons can rotate the ball up top they will have some good looks but they have been forcing shots on close outs.

Sometimes the close out shots are easy, in San Antonio where the shooting backdrop is different than everywhere else in the league, teams shoot a lower FG %. Imagine shooting a jumper where you are wide open but there is a 6' 4" to 7' player running full speed at you with their hands up at your face. Detroit will shoot better at home and thrive off the home crowd energy but they aren't winning 3 games in a row against San Antonio.

Well, where do I start...

Ben Wallace, The 3 time defensive player of the year, has been completely non-existant in this series, the Miami series, and the latter half of the Pacers series. He couldn't guard the lane to save his life! His missed free throws are terrible! He's a professional for f***s Sake!!!

Rasheed Wallace, the key to the series. Not shooting, not rebounding...Hell, he's barely even on the court! He just stands there watching Duncan shoot over him. I think it's time for a trade...I hate to say it...

R.I.P. Hamilton- He cannot shoot free throws or jump shot anymore..He's even missing layups! I don't know whats wrong with him, it looks as if he can't keep up anymore...

Tayshaun, I don't even know what to say...missing 2 footers.....Inexcusable.

Chauncey Billups- Cannot play defense against Tony Parker, it wont happen... 0/1 3 point attempts? What the Hell!? Turnovers are killing him...

McDyess, he's too nervous and his knee his hurt too much for him to play like he's able to. When he hurt his knee in Miami, that was it for him...His defense is non existent

Larry Brown- When your team is being raped in the First and second quarters, call a timeout, put in the backups.. (Hunter, Dupree, Campbell, Ham, McDyess) May not be much help, may even put them in a bigger hole, but hey!, What have they got to lose!? I want to See more Darko!!!!!!

Honestly, You can't give the Spurs all the credit. They're playing better than they usually do because it's like playing a college team for them. 4 turnovers in 15 seconds...C'Mon now... 7 3 pointers would have won the game...but sadly, the Pistons mad 0 3's.....Has that ever happened in a playoff game? I hope the Pistons wake up, but if they don't, I hope the win 2 so the Spurs can win it on Home court...

He hasn't been playing that well, but who the hell do you think we'd get for him to replace what he does? He's not have an awesome series, but seriously, trade Rasheed? The guy who put us over the top last year? Jesus man get a grip, it's not like if we lose this series next season we won't make the playoffs. Adjustments need to be made thats for sure, but goddam, lets not be so dramatic.

Nice!!!! Just a quick question though - why wouldn't you go, JohnO?

The Pistons have got their hands full the next few games...and I'm pretty nervous about that. unsure.gif

Edit: Tayshaun and Rip have definitely got to start shooting better from the field. Hopefully we start getting calls our way instead of any time Ginobli or Duncan drive the lane we got a foul. 'Sheed also is going to have to be a huge factor in these next few games if we want to stand a chance.

I understand you're mad that the Pistons are getting punked at their own game but you're excuses for them have run out. Officials don't miss shots or turn the ball over, the players do.

For the record I am NOT a San Antonio Spurs fan but I do enjoy watching them play. I am not a bandwagon Spurs fan. You won't see me with a Spurs flag on my car or a Tim Duncan jersey. But you will see me pointing a finger at you for being cocky enough to call me out on a basketball topic when you're obviously lacking game knowledge.

"but the refs don't really matter when you aren't hitting any shots."--Dallas27

Did you ever see me making excuses for the Pistons getting beat so badly? I said numerous times that the Pistons aren't hitting any shots, so if thats an excuse well I guess I am making excuses. I said that the refs were making some bad calls but I never said that they lost the game(s) because of them. And for the person that was saying something about game 1 and 2 being reffed differently...well they use three different refs each game so that would be the reason.

And when did I ever call you out? I never did you just seem to have some personal vendetaa against me. You were the one that started all this crap, even in the other thread, by stating all you see is crap coming out of my mouth. I don't lack game knowledge, fly to Michigan and talk to me in person. I don't have time to sit here and spend 1 hour writing a 5 page summary of every game, I am a scratch golfer, have more important things to worry about smile.gif And maybe you say that becuase you just like to take a part of my post that you don't like and say something about it and disregard the rest. For example: You totaly ignored my ideas on Sheed and just went straight to the obvious "games aren't won in the first quarter," come on dude, you don't think I know that? I've been playing sports for 17 years, including winning States in Hockey, are games won in the first period?

Ok maybe i went a little overboard...I'm just really angry at the way they are playing. He needs to play better! He can easily stop Duncan...But he isn't and it's pissing me off!!

Here's an interesting twist on the so-called biased reffing in these NBA playoffs.

Who's the biased ref?

yow...

Crawford worked game 2...Garretson worked game 1.

Interesting indeed....

EDIT: Game 2 against Miami was the only game Neithr Crawford nor Garretson worked. And Miam iclosed that game out with Dwyane Wade going nuts and scoring 20 points in the 4th quarter and playing some of his best defense. Detroit played well enough to win...Wade stole that game in the 4th.

In other words the Pistons could easily be 12-0 in non Crawford/Garretson games, which have for the most part been called fairly. Looking at ridiculously officiated games like game 2 of the finals where Craw and Garish are in charge, you have to wonder...these guys' have officiated the Pistons to 1-7, other guys to 11-1....it could just be a coincidence..but could easily be intentional attempts to cause the Pistons to lose.

You guys know for a fact that gowingsgo and Rampage will just come on and say we are crying and making excuses for the article above. That article is interesting though...very interesting when you add in "dude, even the spurs own ice man george gervin said on national tv that the pistons just aren't getting the calls...," courtesy of JohnO.

The whole referee conspiracy thing is way out there. Compare it to baseball and the different strike zones for umpires. Some have bigger, some have smaller strike zones. The players all played 82 games and all had a chance to see how these refs call games. In fact, the team probably has a report on how each ref calls the games. They know what they can and cant get away with on the floor with the refs out there. The Pistons need to adjust to the way the game is being called and play basketball. The refs arent there to change the outcome of the game. The players do that.

I guarntee 100% that you wouldn't be saying this if the games were reversed in Detroit's favor and Detroit was up 2-0 in the series.

edit: and for the record, retired referees have come out and said that they would indeed call games differently for who was out on the court, so Duncan will get more calls than Rasheed and Ginobili will get more calls than Chauncy, all because of who they are.

Well, tonight is the game to see if the Pistons can still win it, or not. I believe if they go down 3-0, they're done. Period. Rip and Tayshaun HAVE to start makin shots more. 'Sheed is also going to have to be a huge factor in the game! I think finally playing back at home however will help them a bit.

Let's go Pistons!!!

Oh, and one quick question - anyone know when the game starts? Thanks!

Wow, that definitely will not be good for San Antonio if Ginobili is injured seriously.

I liked the early turnover Big Ben caused and the nice slam to finish it off.

C'mon Pistons!! Let's Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
