timothy1997 0 Report post Posted October 16, 2005 Saying all his recievers are hurt is just another excuse. The best reciever on the team so far this year, Johnson, and Pollard aren't injured. Those two should be plenty to move an offense down the field and score a td or two. Granted the o-line did suck but Joey has to find a way to get it done and he isn't. The time his happy feet would have actually helped him he sticks in the pocket for most the game. See the Pollard catch? They gotta get rid of the right side of the o-line, I'm pretty sure they were responsible for every sack today. And they gotta get rid of Mooch, and the oc, and Millen, and Harrington...you know what? They should just relocate to a different city and rebuild, maybe that will break the qb curse this city has. thats why they built ford field. To get rid of the pontiac silverdome quaterback curse..lol

Yzermania19 1 Report post Posted October 16, 2005 (edited) Admittedly I dont' know much about football, and I am still learning about the game and its machinations (I finally, FINALLY understand the downs!! You don't know how exciting that is for me!! ) but I have watched the Lions consistently for a couple of seasons now. I watched last year because it was the only sport in town (I don't like basketball. At all). I am watching this year because I am a "glass-half-full" type of person. Usually. It's amazing how watching the Lions will change your mind on that. So, based on the last 500 years of futility for the Detroit Lions, here is my opinion (and it is just that - my opinion) on what the Lions need to do in order to win, not necessarily a Super Bowl, but just win - 1. Fire Mooch 2. Fire Millen 3. Trade Joey for a box of footballs and some Froot Loops 4. Hell, trade the whole team, except Jasen Hansen 5. Sell the team to someone who cares The last one is key - sell the team to someone who cares. The Tigers suck, they have sucked for, oh, about 250 years now, and probably will continue to suck for the forseeable future (Jim Leyland is NOT the answer, but that's an entire other thread) but at least Ilitch gives the impression that he cares and appears to make efforts at trying to improve the team, even though they don't work out (Juan Gonzalez) more than they do (Placido Polanco). Old Man Ford has given no indication that he even gives a crap about the Lions, other than as a tax write off. Otherwise, he would have never extened the incompetent boob Millen's contract for five years, and Mooch would have been gone after last season. It would be nice if the Lions had the opportunity to play in the Superbowl in Detroit on their nice, bright, shiny new field, but unfortunately that dream is right up there with seeing unicorns fly outside my window. Not gonna happen, at least not in this reality. Somewhere out there is an alternate reality, one in which the Lions have won the Superbowl several times in the last...oh, nevermind. It's just too far fetched to exist in ANY reality. Edited October 16, 2005 by Yzermania19
Matt 1,049 Report post Posted October 17, 2005 Musings: - I f'ing love this defense. It's pure smash-mouth football out there and those guys KILL people out there. Kenoy has really started to come on in the last couple of weeks and Holmes has had two of the biggest hits I've seen in a long time the past two weeks. - Joey sucks, inept offensive line or not. the guy freaks under pressure, and outside of one great play on a pass to Pollard (set-up *cough* by a great block on Rucker by Jones). - Mariucci sucks. Dallas is right -- he's a predictable little ***** out there. Tollner's either just a cronie or a puppet out there. I mean, they threw the deep ball maybe, what, twice the ENTIRE game? - You guys did know their defense SUCKS against the pass right? - Backus sucks. - Raiola sucks. - DeMulling sucks. - Oh, how I (and Kevin Jones) has missed thee, Sledge. - How about FOX *constantly* showing sideline footage of teammates blowing up on Harrington? Kevin Johnson, Pollard (not so much blowing up, but POed), Raiola (lovers spat).... It's getting worse.. And finally.... What's the over/under on a potential team mutiny between the offensive and defensive units? The offensive guys will just point at Harrington, but still... That defense was LIGHTS OUT today and if you get ANYTHING -- ***ANYTHING*** -- from your offense YOU WIN THE DAMN GAME! /head asplodes
gowingsgo 3 Report post Posted October 17, 2005 Y'all can have Tommy Maddox if you want. That low life insurance selling piece of crap single handedly ruined our defense's stellar effort today. We have 0 picks through 4 games and Tommy Gun goes for 3 picks and a fumble on a handoff that would have sealed a potential GW field goal. I'd have rather seen Charlie Batch's game today than insurance boy.

It's kind of funny, when you think of it, since the majority of the football pundits pegged the Lions as to having one of the top offenses in the NFL and the *defense* as being the weak link. Ha! Vladinator 0 Report post Posted October 17, 2005 Harrington didn't play great, but he was hardly the main reason for the loss. You can't do much when you're on your butt after every play and the play-calling is absolutely terrible. On the last drive, he made the throw that should have put them in range for a long field goal try (well within range for Hanson), but it was dropped. They also should have had time-outs left to use...poor coaching cost them those... Also, as great as the defense looked all game, that last drive was pathetic. He threw to the same receiver all the way down the field, yet he still ends up wide open in the end zone for the touchdown... Overall, another horrible performance by the entire team. Harrington deserves his share of the blame, but I'd put a lot more on the coaching staff and the offensive line than him. Mariucci is supposed to be a great offensive coach, yet their play-calling is horrible.
BlueMonk 102 Report post Posted October 17, 2005 Oh, the coaching has sucked. But we're starting to see signs of a splintered locker room, and signs that the backs are pointing fingers at each other. I think it's safe to say that Harrington and his receiving corps have no mutual trust in one another. Lots of QBs are exposed to pressure, but most (yes, Joey is clearly below average) respond to it at least adequately. He makes poor decisions. He telegraphs his every move so bad that the defense lines 'em up and makes the play on the receiver before the ball even leaves his hand. You can see him freeze up when he looks down field and his #1 and #2 options aren't quite as open as he wants, and he methodically stares down his RB in the backfield for the invevitable dump to gain 2 yards. A dead man could see the play coming.

No kidding, I have NO idea why they put a RB in the backfield on those plays, have a f**king empty backfield so he doesn't have an option. Ha! Yeah, I hear ya. I mean, we have always had a pretty solid D.. Not great, but always solid, and usually able to keep us in many games... This year, finally since the Barry, Herman, Mortin and Perriman era, we were supposed to have an amazing offense.. But, just like usual it's pee wee at best.. It's been a frustrating 20+ years, and I don't see it getting any better any time soon. What sucks is that the Fords are willing to spend the money, and the do, they just spend it on the wrong personel from the front office on down to the water boy.. And, in my own personal opinion, Mooch was never a good coach, even at Cal.. Just like Denny Green isn't a good coach.. 1 player made each of these coaches have a rep.. You may hate them, but, TO and Moss are simply great and TO made Mooch and Garcia look good.

He threw to the same receiver all the way down the field, yet he still ends up wide open in the end zone for the touchdown... While I agree that the defense should've come up with a stop in the final minutes of the game, I'm not going to get *too* hard on Holt for the blown coverage on Proehl on the TD. The Panthers ran the same play that they had earlier during the game (and on that drive) -- that little cut across the middle of the zone where Proehl was finding room past the DL and under the linebackers... Only on the TD play, Proehl wasn't the one cutting across the line. When the ball was snapped Holt bit on that player (loathe to be beaten again by that play) and that gave Proehl, on his route, to get wide open. That's just great playcalling... Kind of a novelty around these parts, isn't it? And speaking of that TD play... did Weinke even get it off before the playclock expired? It was close, either way... fightfan24 0 Report post Posted October 17, 2005 I thought the clock had run out too -- I was expecting a whistle. If a back up who hasn't played in two years can make those little slant passes why can't Joey. I think Joey needs to consult with that Lucinda Basset from those anxiety attack radio ads -- I think Joey has a panic disorder. Funny observation on the broadcasts the last two weeks -- last week they were saying "Joey needs to stay in the pocket to allow his receivers to finish the passing routes", yesterday they were saying "He needs to get out of the pocket and force the d-backs to think.". Too funny.
