johnogrodnickfanclub 0 Report post Posted February 3, 2006 I really don't think it would've mattered, this team is a looooooong ways away from doing anything. isn't that what they thought about the rams until martz and vermeil arrived? sometimes...i think the right coaches and the right framework make all the difference in the world... martz would have been great...he's no nonsense, all business type of guy that doesn't put up with idiots...and he's very good at his job... we messed up. we should have gave him the money he wanted. it's not too late! go back and offer him his bottom-line figure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Matt 1,049 Report post Posted February 3, 2006 By the looks of things it wasn't money (as Martz would lead you to believe) but that, in the end, Marinelli didn't appear comfortable with the hire. Kind of odd, considering he was "offered the job", but there's NO WAY IN HELL the Lions balked at giving Martz $1.5m/year for 3 years. That said... I think the Lions should approach Wisenhunt (sp) from the Steelers after the Super Bowl, and I think they will. He runs that power game that Marinelli keeps talking about, etc. I'm not sure if he's still under contract after this season (probably is) and a move to the Lions would be a 'lateral' move even with a pay increase, plus it appears that Oakland his hot for him, too. Wisenhunt is the OC right? I dont see any reason why he would leave Pitt to take the same job here. Even if he got a pay increase, its way too risky for him. He needs to use Pitt as a springboard to move up to head coach, if not this year then next year. If he came here he would be in a position where our offense would HAVE TO produce or his stock for becoming a head coach in the future would be hurt drastically. Like if he came here and our offense still ranked in the 20's, who the hell would want him then?? Unproductive QB's and WR's, s***ty line....way too much of a gamble for him. Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted February 3, 2006 The same reason the Lions wanted to talk to Tom Moore? Well of course im not saying the Lions shouldnt approach him, my point is simply why in the world would he leave an offense with proven talent to come to Detroit for the same position?? He'd have a better offense in Pittsburgh which would help his head coaching resume like it did Mularkey. Come to Detroit and have struggling offense, and your shot at becoming a head coach is next to nil.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted February 3, 2006 With regards to Tom Moore, it would make alot more sense if he were to leave and come here. Being in the league so many years maybe he would look at the Detroit situation as a chance to prove himself. But I dont see any need for Wisenhunt to do that. Being in the league so many years maybe he would look at the Detroit situation as a chance to prove himself. But I dont see any need for Wisenhunt to do that. Why not? Moore has more of a proven track record, IMO, than Wisenhunt. I don't see a difference between the two outside of the offensive philospophy each has. I tell you, though, this whole Martz saga is pretty interesting.

betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted February 9, 2006 Is this true? Because if it is this is huge news for the Lions It is. Martz has actually signed this time. Link. The terms are officially undisclosed but thought to be $4 million for 3 years. Martz has all the reputation of an offensive genius, but sometime during the Thanksgiving game against Atlanta, the hopeless optimist Lions fan in me disappeared and was replaced with the jaded cynic Lions fan. So I'm going with wait-and-see. Martz turned Marc Bulger and Ryan Fitzpatrick into offensive superstars, and I do think the Lions have a better defense than the Rams. The question on everybody's mind now will be: What does Martz thing of Joey Harrington?

There's Kevin Jones and the Williams boys. Talent, if not established talent, but it's there to work with. The Lions' cupboard isn't bare. But I still want Matt Schaub. mannysBETTER3434 1 Report post Posted February 9, 2006 (edited) Poll: How many seasons before Martz becomes interm head coach? (Serious Question) I'm with Red, I would love Matt Schaub, but I really think we will end up with Volek from Tenn. Plus with Vick running all over ATL would be dumb to trade away a good backup QB. What are our draft/FA needs? Steve Hutchinson , from SEA would be nice. Do you think were to high to draft D'Brickashaw Ferguson from VA? Of course we could draft another WR since Rogers looks like a bust Edited February 9, 2006 by mannysBETTER3434

betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted February 10, 2006 Hey guys, when I see images of Ford Field I'm always impressed. I know it's a new stadium, so the facilities would be good. I'm assuming most if not all you have been there. What are your thoughts? Ford Field is brilliant. First off, the suites are all stacked up on one side instead of in between the lower and upper decks. That means much, much better views from the cheap seats. ("Cheap" being relative.) Second, as you may have read, they incorporated an existing building into the design. They tore down about a third of the Hudson's warehouse, built in the 1920's, and attached the stadium to the rest. The team's offices are now there in the old warehouse, as well as concession stands and stores for the stadium. There was even talk of putting a hotel in the warehouse, but I think that fizzled. The brick and windows on the warehouse were replaced, and the exterior of the new part of the building was designed to match the warehouse. They did this so well that from certain angles you can't tell where the old building ends and the new one begins. The main atrium is gorgeous. There's so much brick used, inside and out, that you really get a very urban feel, and unlike a lot of stadiums they've built, you can't mistake Ford Field for any other stadium or any other city. Heaton 1 Report post Posted February 10, 2006 The media is already predicting the Lions to make the playoffs next season. I don't get it, I see zero reason to believe the Lions will "snap out of it" just because of a new coach and Mike Martz. No offensive line, no QB, an injury prone running back, a WR who can only make the circus catches and has shown to be incapable of making the easy routine plays, another WR who has a substance abuse problem who probably won't be back and LB's who would be 3rd string on most other teams. Wow, you're pessimistic. Then again, I haven't exactly read that the media is jumping on the Lions bandwagon.....where'd you hear that? Anyway, we have half an offensive line, which is better than none, and what's that about the linebackers, you can't be serious??? By the end of the season, when Bailey, Lehman, Holmes, and Davis were all down, sure, but those top four are probably in the top five or seven groups of linebackers in the league. If there's one big strength on the Lions, it's the front seven.

The Rams went 4-12 in 1998 and ranked 27th in total offense. Martz became their offensive coordinator in 1999, and they went 13-3, ranked first in total offense and won the Super Bowl. course, i also realize '99 was the year they discovered kurt warner, acquired marshall faulk, and drafted torry holt... also...i wish we got John Ramsdell as our qb coach...he was martz's qb coach of late...he was supposed to come to detroit, but when the martz/detroit deal went south he signed with san diego...dammit...if only he would have waited a little longer...
