1/8 GDT: Detroit Red Wings Vs. Dallas Stars

Right, I haven't trawled through the 7 new pages of comments since I went to bed last night, but I think I can gather the general gist. Probably much the same after any Wings loss.

Therefore, I am going to post my spiel, which may be long and quite possible boring, so I can get it out of my system. Hopefully, without offending anyone.

Last night's game was disappointing. It was disappointing for the fans, but I'd wager it was even more disappointing for the players.

Things started out well. We bypassed the usual slow first period, and came out all guns blazing. Three quick goals and we chased Turco from the net. THIS is where things started to go wrong. Not because Hedberg came in and played a blinder, he was solid but we never really forced him to make hugely remarkable saves. The goalie switch, as it was intended to do, fire up the Stars guys. Suddenly they were thinking "We have the best netminder in the league, possibly the world, and OUR crappy play has led him to be pulled." Suddenly they started playing as a team. And suddenly, we stopped.

Now, the eternal debate. Chris Osgood. He didn't have a good game. And I think if you ask him, he will say the same thing. Nobody can have been more disappointed with his play last night than Chris himself. However, when there's a loss, it's far too easy to blame the goaltender. Whether it's Chris Osgood, Manny Legace or Martin Brodeur. Let's not forget that Turco was pulled, but I wouldn't ever suggest this makes him a bad goalie, or detracts from his records over the season thus far.

The most casual observer of hockey will blame the goaltender for all losses. Why? Because a mistake by a goaltender is far easier to detect when you're a hockey novice than a mistake by a defenceman or a forward. Goalie mistakes have disasterous consequences, much more so then mistakes by forwards and even defenceman.

If a goalie had never been pulled in his career, if he had never let in bad goals, then he would be the most amazing goalie in existence EVER. Osgood didn't play well, and we know he doesn't play well when he's not given back to back starts. That is one of his weaknesses. One of Manny Legace's strengths is that he has the capability to come in cold and play several games very well. However, it's still my opinion, much as I love Manny, that he lacks the stamina to play the bulk of a season. That shouldn't really be too relevant however, as that is why we have two top class netminders.

I digress. It's easy to blame Osgood for the loss, and I know people will, particualrly a hard core of people who always do. It's easier to come to terms with the fact that one player was responsible for a loss, rather than the fact that the whole team didn't play well. It's much easier to find a scapegoat for a loss, than actually sit down and think aboout it rationally.

We lost because we sat back after we chased Turco, and let the Stars walk all over us. Osgood didn't play well, neither did a whole bunch of guys on the team. I think if we're going to discuss who was to blame for a loss, it's only fair we look at the whole picture, instead of jumping on the back of Osgood, as we seem to do every game.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say some Wings fans watch games WANTING us to lose, and WANTING Osgood to have a bad game, just so they can come on and claim they are justified.

Just my two pence worth.

Ha. Check out these two articles. Babs is pissed, usually he'd come out and say something bout the play of our goalie. Not this time.

Babcock puzzled at fall out in play

Stars barrage buries Red Wings

Hmm...interesting indeed. Thanks for posting!

And it's all Osgood's fault of course... rolleyes.gif

For us to be up 3 goals and just stop playing for the most part in the middle of the 2nd period, that's just inexcusable. Remember, it takes a team effort to win. It appears we came out playing as a team, then tailed off in the middle of the game...that's not good.

I'm sure Babs had a nice talk with them after that game.

It's good to see that Babcock realizes that it wasn't Osgood's fault.

Nobody's saying it's ALL Osgood's fault (that I see anyways). And of course goalies play badly from time to time. But how many time this year can Ozzie apologists keep saying "Well, all goalies have a bad game now and then"?

Look at his stats this season. Manny has a .922 save percentage compared to Ozzie's .888%. I could go on and list every other category (goals against, wins/loses, overtime record, shutouts, penalties, etc) and it would be the same thing. The only stat of Ozzie's that I think Ozzie MAY have a better record in is assists.

But my point being, is that Ozzie is not having a good year. The Ozzie apologists can say "other goalies have bad games too" or "goalie x is a good goalie and his stats are bad this year", but it doesn't change the fact that Ozzie is not playing well (overall not playing well, obviously he has great games now and then).

Did Osgood have a good December? Sure he did, but he certainly wasn't great (except for one game). Manny's goals against and save percentage for the entire SEASON is better than Osgood's GA and save percentage in December.

The other thing Ozzie apologists bring up is the fact that Osgood doesn't seem to play well after sitting. Well, if that's true, it doesn't bode well for Ozzie. Babcock isn't going to sit a better playing goalie in hopes that SOMETIME down the line Osgood will start playing better. If you play well you play, if you don't you sit. Osgood's going to have to find a way to play better when coming in cold or he's in trouble.

Look, I used to be a HUGE Ozzie fan. And I'll always have a warm spot in my heart for Ozzie. But I still remember quite clearly his last year in Detroit where Manny played half the season because Osgood kept having bad games. I truely feel bad for Osgood. I had hoped he would have a great season, because I know he loves Detroit, and Ozzie HAS won a cup for us. It's just not happening, yet. Maybe he'll turn things around the second half of the season, and I certainly hope so.

But everytime Osgood has a bad game and people complain about him, please remember that it's not JUST that he had one bad game, but how many he's had this entire season so far.

I hope Osgood picks it up, but Manny's my favorite goalie, and he's played like the better goalie this year... so GO MANNY!

Finally a poster on this board that doesn't need to bash a goalie to get his point across. thumbup.gif

Yeah, he definitely was really good in December, and just recently has had two bad games. But like you even mentioned in your post, there is still half a season/playoffs left, and we all know a lot can change from here on out. I have faith in Oz, always have always will. I think he'll turn it around.

With two most recent games I was happy to see that Ozzie is coming out right about the middle of the pack so far in stat wise. He doesn't have to win each and everygame for me, just enough to get us into the post season.

My wife just informed me that her boss is giving back our tickets (he bought them off of us for Xmas present to his dad and the day was bad) so that we can now go to Thursdays game against the flyers... Yeah I was a little overzealous about selling tickets this year to get money back, that I sold us right out of the 2nd half. laugh.gif

So im thinking he's got the tickets. smile.gif

Excellent, triple the support biggrin.gif

We will try to get there for warmups... I am picking Jeni up from Wayne State so we will already be down there...Not sure what Jersey Jeni will have on, either her Osgood or her Legace I would gather...I will be wearing my Rivers jersey that night.

Let's all appreciate that we have a great back-up in Ozzie!

I know you're trying to be funny, but part of the problem is that Ozzy isn't a good backup.

If Legace plays well and for the first time in his career carries the load as a starter, I have even less confidence in Osgood coming off the bench after sitting for a long stretch.

EDIT: I'm definitely not saying we should continue to start Ozzy even if he's playing poorly, just that the idea of him in a true backup role makes me worry even more about his performance. And also worry about Manny's ability to carry a heavier load.

The words Ozzie & Back Up just don't go together. And I seriously don't see that happening. Two bad games in a row isn't gonna push this guy to being back up already. No way.

Awesome! Do you two have good seats? I'm usually in section 108 or 102. Depending on who I get the tickets from. lol

I like Osgood and Legace, but that has nothing to do with hockey and winning. There is a salary cap and with that comes along a lot different attitude towards everything. Our team can not go out and spend 5 million a season for a Turco or Luongo at this point in the season.

Hockey is a Business and it is about WINS, not a popularity contest. We need a goaltender who can play good now and give us WINS NOW, not later or 2 months from now. Same goes for a goalie in the playoffs.

I do not care if the Red Wings dress up Mowers in goalie pads, if he gets the job done and gives us the W's consistently, then I am all for it.

Definetly not as good as you, but we are Row 11 Sec 214... We are pretty much right behind the visiting goalie, just below 1/2 in the Upper bowl. A nice perk is that we are dead center in the row so no annoying people getting up for Potty breaks during play. I absolutely love the location of them and won't be moving unless we can get lower bowl seats next year. My best friend and his wife have tickets two sections over in row 8 so we can see each other from our seats.

The philly game will be bitter sweet as I traded my Kesler and the Canucks tickets to her boss to get this game so he could take his dad to the canucks game... Bummer because I really wanted to see him again after the game, but I will just have to wait until Playoffs or next season.

there is not a bad seat at the Joe.. thats for sure thumbup.gif

That's true. I remember when I went to the Michigan vs. MSU game last year my friends and I were in the last section, and last row in the Joe yet we still saw everything fine, and had a great time.

Speaking of sucky broadcasts, did you folks in the Detroit area get any kind of Wings post game show tonight? Up north here, they switched right to some other crap on FSN, and I never got to hear what kind of lame excuses Babcock came up with. Usually he sounds like the past ten Lions coaches after these losses, with gems such as, "We just can't do these things if we expect to win games," (usually said right after the Wings have just done those things for the umpteenth time this season.

there are varying amounts of time dedicated to stuff related to post-game coverage, but it's very hard to digest their broadcasts in general. it's produced somewhere in the northwest and the anchors are totally disingenuous in their approach. they act as if they are fans but are really professional broadcasters who do one show per timezone. a few years back, while in colorado, i saw the same guy who acted like a detroit fan doing the intermission/post-game show for the avs.

the radio (1270) is where it's at. too bad there's a signal coming from charlevoix on the same frequency, or you could probably pick it up.

Comes from Seattle. It's a joke the way they act like they care about Detroit teams. The best part is when a Detroit team plays a Seattle team, you can watch them twice, one time with a bias towards Detroit and later with a bias towards Seattle. I have no idea why they can't produce a show here, they have some local talent here that'd work.

the radio (1270) is where it's at.  too bad there's a signal coming from charlevoix on the same frequency, or you could probably pick it up.

So the DSR is really in Seattle?
