betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted June 21, 2006 As would I, was just kidding cause that was the same 2 Atl gave us for Farnsworth. But theres no way in hell theyd even take back Miner for Smoltz. Miner does look like a player though! Plus we got Miller coming next year (if he gets signed hopefully), and Tata who i think has got "it". I just have that feeling from seeing him in the pen earlier that theres something there. This just makes Humberto Sanchez expendable, who has alot more trade value than Miner and Tata because of his stuff as well as gaudy minor league numbers. I think you're getting overexcited with Miller. Verlander only pitched a couple games last year and didn't do very well, and Miller supposedly doesn't have the stuff that Verlander does. I'd bet on Miller spending 2007 in the minors.

Yeah, i tend to get overly excited about prospects! I heard after the CWS, if he gets signed of course, Miller would then probably pitch some at AA Erie. IF, and i know thats a big IF, he got signed and did that it would put him ahead of Verlander. Because of the holdout, if im remembering correctly, Justin didnt pitch for us in our minors after the college season 2 years ago. Hey you never know, look great at Erie and he could be seriously fast tracked next year by starting out at Toledo (or dare i say...nah i wont say it.. ) As for his stuff, his slider is devastating and almsot on the same talent level as Verlander's fastball. He also throws a fastball of his own between 93-96. While i'd give Verlander the overall edge cause of his curveball, I dont think theres much difference between the two. I think Miller be can compared to a left handed and taller version of Bonderman. Edited June 22, 2006 by Lou_Siffer
dallas27 7 Report post Posted June 24, 2006 Good effing game tonight, much jealousy for anyone who went. With Kenny pitching tomorrow and Bonderman on Sunday I don't see why they can't get two more wins. Can't wait for Tuesday when they go up against Clemons. Hey you never know, look great at Erie and he could be seriously fast tracked next year by starting out at Toledo (or dare i say...nah i wont say it.. ) Verlander did indeed shut it down and not pitch for the system after the college season was over because of the contract talks. I read somewhere that the Tigers prefer it that way anyway, that even had Verlander signed, he would have done strength and conditioning work only and then pitched in the Arizona Fall League. Miller would be the same way. Ease their arms into the grind of big-league work is the idea. Remember that it's quite common in college to have a full week in between games for starting pitchers. As for tonight's game, love the bat work by the Tigers. It's much more fun to play merry-go-round on the basepaths than just hit a couple home runs. Better all around: demoralizes the opposition and makes the pitcher throw more pitches. Scott Speizio gets the Golden Sombrero tonight

Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted June 25, 2006 Holy s***..I dont know if there was something wrong with the radar gun or what, but Zumaya hit 104! I'm not gonna doubt it, because it could be attributed to all the adrenaline he was feeling after the Tigers tied it. It bounced around from 99-102...then bam 104. I havent seen the paper yet today so im curious if theres anything written about the gun not working right, cause that is some serious gas ive never personally seen before!! It seemed to be working right all night and on track, unless they just amped it up a little when Zumaya came out to get the crowd going.. What a win! Now lets hope after this we can beat on the Astros! Show the NL wassup.

St. Louis probably can't wait to play a team like the cubbies or brewers now. 10-2 against the NL Central, only single losses to Cincy and Milwaukee blemish that. Been absolutely chewing up the National League. Of course, the Pale Hose are 10-1 as of right now, with a game against the 'Stros tonight. Frickin' White Sox. Oh well. National League right now can't hold a candle to the American League. The AL this year has won something like 61% of the interleague games. Hopefully Houston can at least take one tonight, it's really obnoxious that here we've won 9 of our last 10 and the Sox will be 10 of 10 if they win tonight. Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted June 26, 2006 Aubrey Huff to Detroit is starting to gain a little steam, and he's actually been hot as of late even though his BA is still only .236. Its said Tampa would want a pitching prospect from us, hopefully we can get away with just giving them Jair Jurrjens...although Tata seems the most likely candidate. (i would think humberto would be considered way too good for Huff). Aubrey can DH against righties, as well as play occasionally at 3rd, 1st, and RF. And when he's not starting he can make for a good pinch hitter.
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted June 26, 2006 A while back there was a post about Bonderman, and how he may never be the ace he was projected to be because he didn't have the chance to develop a changeup in the minors, and won't have the chance to experiment in the majors. Here's the rebuttal, finally: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article.../606260395/1050 Rosenberg of the Freep details how Bonderman learned a new grip for the change from Kenny Rogers and has been unhittable since. If that's the case, then will it be ridiculous or what, to watch Bonderman and Verlander grow from here on out? Rogers deserves an extra million from Ilitch for that. So far he has: -Taught all the pitchers how to field their position. -Brought Mike Maroth to the next level, teaching him (a fellow soft-tossing lefty) how to really mix, match, and control his pitches. -Shown Jeremy Bonderman a new changeup. -Exerted a calming influence on rookies, like Miner, Verlander, and Zumaya, thrown into key positions. -Won 10 games and pitched his way to an All-Star berth, possibly as the starter. This guy needs to be a pitching coach. I demand the Tigers hire him as such, or at least as bullpen coach or something, when he retires. Has he been worth every frickin' penny of that $16M or what? BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted June 27, 2006 I remember my reaction when I heard they signed Kenny for 8 million a year was, "what the f*** is DD doing??" I wish everyone on this site who thinks they're smarter than Holland would remember that they have access to a very small percentage of the information GMs have available. I'm watching the game on FSN Houston right now, and their announcers are giving the Tigers quite a bit of love. Although after that 5 run 3rd inning, they might stop

Although after that 5 run 3rd inning, they might stop I remember thinking, holy crap, he's 41 and not only did we give him Pudge money, they gave him two years. Faaaaaaaaanntastic. Little did we realize that money was buying a second pitching coach. The legacy he's alraedy left on this pitching staff is unbelievable. Between Leyland's frequent visits to the mound without going to the pen and Rogers' tutoring, Chuck Hernandez must feel like the biggest fifth wheel.

BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted June 27, 2006 Both the Astros TV and radio guys were giving the Tigers a lot of love tonight. The radio guys were talking about how they hoped to get one last look at Tiger Stadium this road trip. The TV color guy was really excited about seeing Verlander pitcher on Wednesday. People are starting to realize. Personally, I'm content to NY and Boston have all the attention, the less pressure the better, at least that's my way of thinking. Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted June 27, 2006 (edited) I was happy we signed Kenny Rogers, not cause of how he might pitch though but because of the camera man incident lol. I figured hey if things get bad at least he might blow up or something and assault someone, you know, give us some entertainment! But of course i'll take the winning, calm, and teacher version of Rogers over that! Leyland seriously has the midas touch, everytime he goes to the mound to have a chat a potential big inning by the opposing team is killed. Its happened numerous times with Bonderman, once or twice with Colon that i can remember, and last night again with Miner. I dont think its too early, just pencil in the Mets in the World Series. The National League is pathetic aside from them....and hey how about a blast from the past with Munson and Dave Borkowski last night? Is Randy Smith over there? What i love about this team is every game, it is a new guy stepping up with big plays. Monroe and Gomez had big hits today. Tomorrow it could very well be Polanco and Granderson...next day it can be Pudge and Shelton....that is what I love about this team.
