redwingfan19 293 Report post Posted March 3, 2007 Franzen just looks possessed! Calder was a great pickup, he reminds me alot of Cleary, both play the same kinda style. Franzen is a beast out there I loved that hit he put on Kieth, just flattened him. The Mule should take some boxing lessons in the Summer, he's a big guy and very strong, It be great if he learned how to fight.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted March 3, 2007 Calder doesnt hit and doesnt fight,... the phrase tough and gritty forward just doesnt seem to fit for me (more-so the tough part of it) Betuzzi? Yes. Calder? No.

Was thinking the same thing....Franzen looks like he should be able to beat the skin off a guy, but he allows himself to get punched and pushed around and just takes it. Johan needs to learn how to throw them thangs before guys cheap shot him like they've done Homer his whole career.
Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted March 3, 2007 Calder was definitly a good pickup. He goes hard in the corners, is good with the puck, and has the potential to put up some decent points. Good overall pickup by Kenny. Calder doesnt hit and doesnt fight,... the phrase tough and gritty forward just doesnt seem to fit for me (more-so the tough part of it) Betuzzi? Yes. Calder? No. Can you at least agree he's better than Williams? While Calder is no Fedoruk, he's not a perimeter player like Williams. Williams never went into the corners and got the puck. Calder has done that more in two games than Williams had done with the Wings all season.
SweWings 45 Report post Posted March 3, 2007 I'm really happy with what Calder brings to the team. I've been complaining about Williams for a while now but I think this is simply because the role he was given with the Wings wasn't one that fit him and it didn't work very well. The Wings just didn't need him. Hopefully he'll have better development for the Hawks. The addition of Calder makes our team better and more complete has he does things that other players on the team don't. We'll see what happens during the rest of the season and the playoffs and more importantly the players available but if the price is right I'm not so sure that he wouldn't be a decent long term addition on the team. He's young enough too. We'll see what happens. For now though he's definitely bringing something to the team. I like!

Im just disputing the notion that he's the answer to what's a tough and gritty player. Theres a distinct difference between someone like Jamal Mayers for example, and Calder. One's considered tough and gritty, the other isnt.

Theres a distinct difference between someone like Jamal Mayers for example, and Calder. One's considered tough and gritty, the other isnt. Holland acquired Bertuzzi for the toughness and grit... Calder is a good handworking player... even tho you say he isnt tough, hes playing physical out there which says more than some other Wings... i like both pick-ups and our toughness and grit have been addressed... Guest EZBAKETHAGANGSTA Report post Posted March 3, 2007 I wouldn't call him physical in the sense that he's a big hitter. He's gritty. He's not afraid to go into the corners or into a crowd; he's willing to pay the price. I was at the 6-2 game and he got involved in some scrums after the whistles the tv may hav e missed. Guest LivingtheDream Report post Posted March 4, 2007 I absolutely love him. So much that he's probaly already one of my faves. Seriously. He's brings a lot to the Wings. He's really fantastic along the boards, strong as heck on the puck, good on the pk AND pp and really knows how to cycle the puck and doesn't give up on plays. Really tough fella as well. You are so right. People call him gritty, but along with that he has heart and gives his all all the time. Reminds me of McCarty or even Maltby of old, but with much better hands. Intense, heart, effort... He is EXACTLY the kind of player we needed. Too bad we couldn't have found one or two more like him. Because of his 100% effort I hope a few other Wings wake up and realize they need to notch up their level of play. P.S. Speaking of effort, what about the kid Matt Hussy last night? Mickey was raving about how he played his a$$ off every shift. I tell you, these young hungry guys can teach some other 3rd and 4th line Wings a lesson - again, notch it up, or get out of the way for someone else who is 100% into playing his all. SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted March 4, 2007 Two solid games from Calder so far right now. Surprised how he's gelled in fairly well with Franzenstein and Bob. I hope this keeps up but it's only been 2 games, let's not get ahead of ourselves here.
zata40 3 Report post Posted March 4, 2007 Calder looks like one of those players who have hidden talent, but it doesnt show until he's surrounded by others with great talent. good find holland. calder willl help us alot
Guest paveldatsukthenextsavard Report post Posted March 4, 2007 i really like his style of play, especially for the playoffs, he's willing to dig the puck out of the corners, and it seems he never gives up on the play. i also like how many times he takes the puck away from the other teams defensemen, particularly behind the net
Covenant 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2007 I like the way he keeps the puck away from forecheckers down low on the boards, he seems great at that. Feisty, etc. But, I think the KEY point here is that he seems to have given life to Mr. Villified Lang. Yeah, he still turns the puck over deep down low on the left faceoff circle every game LOL, but after that goal the other night.. was it just me, or was he shooting (skating slightly) every time he touched the puck. Get that damned puck to the net, let Kyle pick up a couple of rebounds. Whatever Mr. Calder brings to us in the playoffs will be a huge benefit I'm thinking. So, when Sammy comes back... which line? Franzen seems very very hungry to solidify his second line role?
Mors 201 Report post Posted March 4, 2007 Babcock will have some tough line choices when everyone is healthy, 'cause right now I'm really liking the Franzen-Lang-Calder line.
