An Enforcer

What pisses me off about people saying the Red Wings are ******* because they don't fight a lot is that there not the only team that didn't fight a lot during the regular season, yet the Wings always get singled out. While the Wings only had 13 fights during the regular season and 19 in total(Got facts off DYG.com), the Islanders only had 18 fights during the regular season and 20 in total, the canadiens only had 19 during the regular season and 22 in total, the Wild only had 18 during the regular season and 26 in total, and the Avalanche only had 24 during the regular season and 29 in total. Yet no one talks about the Islanders, Canadiens, Wild, or Avalanche not fighting a lot.

Islanders fight card- http://www.dropyourgloves.com/Fights/TeamS...2007&Team=2

Canadiens fight card- http://www.dropyourgloves.com/Fights/TeamS...007&Team=14

Wild fight card- http://www.dropyourgloves.com/Fights/TeamS...007&Team=20

Avalanche fight card- http://www.dropyourgloves.com/Fights/TeamS...007&Team=16

that's not a very good example because 1. the number of fights is really irrelevant, people were clearly taking liberties on our players during the regular season and we paid for it, we refused to stick up for ourselves and fight back, but if you really want to break down the Wing's 19 fights in total let's see....

Bootland (5), Norton (5) - neither of them are a part of the current line up

Markov (3) - 2 decent scraps, props to that, but his 3rd was the punch he threw at Cajanek (DYG.com adds those)

Lila (3) - 2 decent scraps, his 3rd fight was him getting pounded by Gauthier

Bertuzzi (1) - lol I guess he fought Phaneuf

Franzen (1) - pretty sure he wasn't aware he was in a fight and had no intentions of fighting back

Lebda (1) - nice to see him try and stand up for himself, never threw a punch though

so realisticly our players managed 6 (Markov 2, Lilja 2, Bertuzzi 1, Lebda 1) fights in a full season + playoffs

I know! God, if Phaneuf wasn't such a light weight pansy that would have been a great fight... How are you supposed to fight when you can just pick the guy up and toss him around like a rag doll! I still score that one to Bert the Hurt.

Someone that can skate, hit, fight and score goals? We had him and traded him away.

Sean Avery. :sly:

I know he has a big mouth and says some stupid things, but I'm sure our veterans can keep him in line.

I'd like to see him back with the wings.

You know, his mouth is actually an asset.

Avery's more of a pest than an enforcer, anyway.

No thanks.

Avery's finally getting his crap together in new york. I don't know why he'd want to leave.

And he's hardly an enforcer. He's like Maltby, only with a better scoring touch, and he doesn't turtle quite as much.

Actually, and i have a feeling that all fight fans will back me up on this, going for an immediate takedown in a fight is more indicative of that player not really wanting to engage with the other. An example of this offhand would be Kirk Maltby. The last few "fights" of his i can recall featured him instantly trying for the slam. Or when Holmstom took down Rivet as he getting up off of Zetterberg. Thats definitely not something i hand a win out for if said player lands no punches.

I wouldnt go so far as to it a ***** act, but its certainly not something you get rewarded for.

Bertuzzi was not 100%, and probably didnt want to be tossing blows in what would be a sure battle with Phaneuf. So he just took him down.

I remeber that , He tried fighting Gary Roberts in 05/06. He put him in a body lock and tried to body slam him. I like fighting in the game , so I'll say it , Putting someone in a body lock and trying to slam them , Is more embarresing then fun to watch. I always watch fights on YouTube of the former wings , Guys Like Konstatinov , McCarty , Probert , Kocur , Lapointe.

God Damn , I want an enforcer !

There was also another fight previous to that where he actually got the slam, I want to say maybe Scott Walker. I recall him doing it multiple times. But in any case, im not trying to make this into another Maltby bash thread, just using it to illustrate my point about Bertuzzi not really wanting to fight it out with Phaneuf.

Yup "mailing it in" as opposed to showing up to work.

Deserves and attaboy for dropping the gloves but a shrug for not really doing much

No question about it. A guy who goes for the body slam does not want to go toe to toe. Bert wasn't 100%, so that it is why he went in for the tie-up. Now as far as an enforcer goes I am all for it. But there isn't anyone out there that really catches my attention. All the good ones are locked-up except of course Big George. With the current management in there we will not see a fighter here. The only way it happens is if they accidentally draft one. We can always look at our tapes and reminisce about the good old days of Probert, Kocur, and a few others that graced the Wings uniform. At one time they use to draft enforcers, but that hasn't been the case for a long time

brad staurt fit the bill

Where on Earth is all this Brad Stuart love coming from? Although, I myself have often thought the Wings are right on the edge of something really special here, they're just missing one final piece, and that piece is...Brad Stuart!

I like Stuart. He's a pretty good younger defenseman (and we'll be in dire need of those in a few years), and he's got potential. But I wouldn't call him an enforcer.

What the??? Am I thinking of somebody else on the Flames roster (Dman)?

Maybe it was Robyn Regehr that I'm thinking of, but wasn't he out with a knee injury?

Dammit - hate it when I'm "brain farting"

Regehr/Phaneuf/Warrener are all pretty good scrappers

You've got to be kidding me.

Brad Stuart will be lucky to be in the league for another year. He's an ok defenseman, but his dirty play makes even some of the worst players we've seen look nice. His cheapshots, like wrapping his stick around peoples neck and throats, is eventually going to piss off the wrong person, and I think you know what'll happen after that.
