Anaheim not exactly the new Hockeytown

umm, why the hell would the NHL put an article on their website like that?

Yeah, let's post an article about how the hometown of one of the Stanley Cup finalists could care less about hockey!

When it comes to promoting hockey, the NHL is its own worst enemy.

Unfortunately, you guys are so off base on this one, it isn't even funny. Geographically, Anaheim (or LA or Raleigh or Nashville, etc) will never be a "Hockeytown". It is what it is.

Anaheim has only had a team for 12 years, and Detroit? Probably a little bit longer.

To say that Anaheim has a team that no one cares about is 100% wrong. People by nature like winners. I recall not too long ago when the Wings had to give tickets away too.

I am not a Wings fan, but I come here because there are some good discussions about hockey in general. Also because I have a good friend who posts here and is a huge Wings fan (you know who you are).

All I am saying is don't try to make an argument when there isn't one. Anaheim will never be a hockey town, it will never have the educated fans of Detroit, Toronto, New Yorks, etc. No more than Fargo, ND will become the Beach volleyball capital of the world.

Can't comment on that one... but I am growing vastly sick of OLN kissing anaheims ass each and every game. That grows very tiresome. Doc needs to shut the hell up. ANd eddie needs to stop calling him DOC!

What type you got going? I prefer Mo' Cheese the best :P OLN is such a joke station. All of those guys in the peanut gallery are so full of themselves.

I can see where you wouldn't care about the coverage, I mean its probably more pro Anaheim than your actual announcers are...

I do enjoy Pennywise though... now that (I believe it was you who told me anyways) I know who it was. However, Vancouver does not play that song like I thought. Anybody know what song Vancouver plays that sounds like Olay Olay Olay?

I lived with someone who grew up in SoCal. The one thing I know for certain is they have thin blood. Think about it. These people are used to warm weather and shorts. It gets into the 60's and they turn on the heat. Do you really expect them to be lining up to go sit in an arena that has to be cold enough to keep the ice frozen?

HATE that guy. Oooh, he can point really fast. BFD.

On the point, I went to a CHL game back in March. Youngstown Steelhounds, just for the shoutout. Anyway, this guy behind me taps me on the shoulder and says "you look like a hockey fan (I was wearing a Wings hat, so naturally he'd think that), this is my first time, how many periods are in a game?"

It's about the most basic question one can ask, but I didn't get mad at him. Why would I? He was there, which means he's somewhat interested in becoming a fan and it making some kind of effort at it. Hopefully he enjoyed the game and will be back for more. And maybe next time he asks someone a question, it'll be about hand passes or something a little more advanced. I just hope that that guy is nice about it and answers the question, instead of laughing at him for not being a hockey lifer.

I think hockey fans tend to be our own worst enemy when it comes to drawing new fans in, we tend to be kind of elitist about things like that.

Born and raised in Michigan myself. The blood has thinned but i went out last winter with my cousins and played tackle football in 10 degree weather in shorts so i still got it.

haha...that is hilarious. I say we kick the Ducks and the Kings out of California. That is Sharks territory

I dunno about the Kings, but the Ducks certainly need (and have needed) to be rescinded or relocated (there's a huge gap between Northern Cal and Seattle with no team, for instance).

Yeah, I found it funny that articles of late called Anaheim the new hockeytown. Hockey isn't even on the radar in Socal compared to the other sports there, such as College Football, NBA, NFL, College Basketball, and the MLB. That essentially puts hockey at #6. I can understand, since these are mostly coming from Socal Newspapers, that they may be just trying to ignite their fan base (or create one?) by these statements, but this is a terrible example.

I hope it's just lower California that's like that, I'd like to hope shark fans from the north are a bit smarter.

We're not all stupid. FYI, Valley Girls don't sit around twirling their hair in their fingers, saying 'OMG' and shopping all the time. SoCal is not as depicted by the media and everyone's general ideas. I'm here in Florida and no one believes me when I tell them I am a Valley Girl because I don't act like they do in the movies.

My point is, you can't generalize. Yes, we have some stupid fans, but who doesn't? It just seems that they look for the stupid fans when it comes to the Ducks.

I definitely understand your point of view with elitism, and that perception is impossible to deny unfortuantely. I speak of this very loosely and in an extremely generic sense, but I often sense this type of behavior in Canadians looking down on U.S. knowledge of hockey, and northern states and hockey fans looking down on fans in more of the southern states. Again, I know and am not trying to portray all Canadians or northern hockey fans like this.

Maybe some of us, myself included, should maybe reconsider how we would have address the non-fans quoted in this article.

The Ducks vs. Kings final reference, I can let slide even though it should be second nature to recognize that these teams either play in the same conference or play each other on a regular basis (and would never meet in a SCF).

But at the same time, when you think Minnesota is in Canada, that has nothing to do with lack of hockey general knowledge. I hate to sound disrespectful, but that reference is just a lack of common sense.

Like someone else said, it isn't like they were at the Pond asking these questions to the people that actually give a rip, they go to Newport Beach which is a good half hour away and talk to people who find it more important to go to the beach than to go somewhere to watch the game. This isn't exactly the best piece of journalism ever. It was an article written by the Canadian "media" to try to get people to believe that every person in the Honda Center thinks it's the regular season and we are playing the Royals.

I thought it was funny because I know that there is a much better fan base than the one depicted here and the fans at the games have been awesome ! Especially during the SCF. I don't know why we are pushing this 'New hockeytown' garbage because everyone knows that Anaheim will never be solely a 'hockeytown'.

Hockey is growing out here and the people that truly love the Ducks are loving our success right now.

Heh, you're right not all girls from SoCal act like valley girls. I'll tell you what SoCal stereotype is not only annoying but very true out there though.....The psychotic drivers! I swear driving in / around the LA area is like a freaking warzone. :scared:

As far as the goofs in these interviews, I can understand getting a little defensive for you guys (and gals) that are actual hockey fans out there, and play the game yourselves and follow the sport. I'm sure the fake bandwagoners are probably more annoying to you than us since its your name they ruin. I believe every fan of football is a fan of hockey that doesn't know it yet, and there's alot of football fans in SoCal, so they'll catch on its just a matter of time.

I don't think anybody is trying to offend you by finding it funny, I know I wasn't it just comes across that way to us.

I guess its because hockey has been instilled for generations around here, if you ask anybody in Michigan, or even the tri-state area from grandma to child, chances are 9 times out of 10 they know whats going on with the Wings. Some more than others, but the people who don't know are a the minority. As you know from our member's avatars there's our friends from Europe and all around the world on here that are hardcore fans.

Just as an example of the local hockey fans around here, this link is a Dearborn cop's 911call who thinks he and his wife are OD'ing on pot (funny I know). Anyways, this guy BELIEVES they are dying, and in the middle of the call he asks the score in the Red Wings game  If that doesn't say it all, I don't know what does.

"The score is tied 3-3 I just wanted to make sure I wasn't hallucinating" <--- that is priceless

edit: I suck at spelling

What sensable people would support a bunch of dirty goons with the refs in their back pocket to claim "Hockeytown"?

I remember back when hockey was an honorable sport... now it's gone to s***... Thanks Ducks!!!!!

So I guess the Ducks leading the league in penalties, the Red Wings having a fair amount of 5-on-3 PP attempts last series against the Ducks, and Ottawa having 11 PP opportunities in 2 games against the Ducks so far don't count then....:scared:

Nomination for the most illogical post this month.

You're talking to the wall SWF. His opinions on Anaheim won't change.

You're right though, it is illogical. And stupid.
