If Dom does decide to leave, I hope we don't suffer from the dread "Martin Gerber" syndrome. That's where a good team goes out and throws millions at a supposedly stellar goalie, in the hopes he will show up again next season -- and then he doesn't? Ask Ottawa about that.

Who says Giguere is the answer? Yes, he's doing fine this season, Last year's playoffs: GAA 3.40 sv% .864

At least if Kenny does this and we get stuck, we have Ozzie to rely on.

I know there's no reason to compare, but since the thread is actually about Hasek --

Regular season Dom: SO 8; GAA 2.05; sv% .913

Regular season Giggy: SO 4; GAA 2.26; SV% .918

Salary Dom: $750,000

Salary Pads: $4 million Belfour bucks

If Giguere can get a huge contract off of his performances, the way Gerber did in Ottawa, then more power to him where ever he lands this summer.

Puckloo, I completely agree with you. Giguere is hugely overrated, just hugely. People don't realize how inconsistent he is, they get fooled by the media as you and I know can be a reality. His whole game is first save mentality, being in position, etc. etc., he is brutal side to side and with recovery. Also, people don't consider what is going to be happening down the road with the goaltending equipment...you sign this guy to a 7-8 million contract for 4 years, 2 years from now guys are going to be wearing 8 inch wide pads and their mother's sweater for a chest pad if Bettman and his scoring-obsessed cronies (i.e. Brett Hull, Ed Olczyk, Keith Jones, various general managers) do their damage. That or bigger nets. You'd be better waiting for Kiprusoff after next season, or, even better, hey, maybe giving, what, a young goalie a chance like everyone says they want to!

Edit: If you want a stopgap for this season, get Belfour. Yes, Belfour. He played really well for Florida last season, believe me, I watched plenty of their games and he was solid, maybe a step down from Hasek but you can see he knows what he's doing out there. Read: stopgap

Belfour is not as good as Osgood and would cost two or three times as much.

If we don't keep Hasek, the ONLY reasonable answer is to find a cheap, effective backup or to go with one of the kids in that role.

Ooohh, he better come back. Otherwise we're screwed next year.

I disagree. I don't know about you guys but I did not think for a minute we'd end up within 6 wins of the cup when we started this year. This team is too talented and driven not to find a way to win consistently. (knock on a hole-filled composite stick!)

I really should have put drafting a goalie in the first round would be silly. I'm very aware of the above thanks. What i was responding to there was the fact that some people would like it if Dom retired, we draft another goalie in the first round, start ozzie, bring up howard (he's not ready) and then put our newly drafted goalie in the ahl. This is why we have free agency, it would be prospect sucide to bring jimmy up now, and shove kid right out of college directly into a starters role in the ahl.

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound so snotty.

This year's draft doesn't sound like it's very deep, so I would imagine Detroit--picking 27th--will go with the best available player no matter the position, even if it's a goalie. I agree with you that the free agency route will be better for filling a spot in Grand Rapids and whichever team replaces Toledo as the Wings' 2nd farm team. I also agree that Howard is not ready for NHL duty, and putting him in a backup role would be even worse than starting him regularly. He won't get any better on the bench, he needs to play full-time in the A.
