I put the flyers in there because they have kept bobby clarke around so long and he continues to build these big slow teams with players like hatcher

Clarke was gone at the start of this season , Hatchers gone this year too.

They arent run badly , if you had a crap defence and Antero Niittymaki between the pipes , your team would suck too.

They will be much better next season and will make the playoffs , bank on it.

True and I think he's starting to learn that lessen finally though with the moves this offseason so far... at least according to the local sports station.

They also complained about the traffic barrels he known for signing and it looks like Floppa's going to try and pull a Clemons or Favre this season.

Edit to add that Biron has been named the starter and Nittymaki should be healthy enough to be a quality back-up

Flyers aren't slow. The might have big body players and such, but I wouldn't call them slow.

They made it to the cup in 1997 with Brindamor, Gratton, LeClair (I think?) Lindross, I wouldn't really call them all slow, at that time.

Now they have Gagne, Kapinen, Richards, Had Forseberg, they don't seem to be a slow team, just an off year.

I wouldn't call Bobby Clarke an A+ GM by any means, but I woun't call the Flyers slow as well. So I would take them off the list. My top 5 would have to be (not in order)

1. Chicago Blackhawks

2. Washington Capitals

3. Phoenix Coyotes

4. St. Louis Blues

5. Los Angeles Kings

Is this all time or currently? Because In all honesty it seems like these lists have some of both involved.

Right now it has to be for me

Chicago- no tv contract still wins out.

Boston- They seem to be making good moves and bad moves in synchro.

Atlanta- That trade along with the some of their past decisions. If they got defensive help they would make the playoffs easy.

Edmonton- Smyth lost over 100k? Goodbye franchise.

Columbus-They are getting nowhere fast.

All time is something different.

Worst overall NHL? Chicago Blackhawks

Worst overall in all of sports history? Detroit Lions (just had to say it)

Lions have won championships. If they won it would be no different then the Wings who didn't get close in four decades. They would instantly get an energetic fan base behind it and become huge around the country.

Sports is for being optimistic folks, save your negitivity for the upcoming presidental elections.

I pretty much agree with that list, except I think Phoenix has been s*** for the past 5 years or so. Might have to put them higher.

1. Chicago - they earned #1 hands down IMO

2. Boston - beyond the miserable Thornton trade, plenty of other bad moves

3. Phoenix -Haven't made the playoffs since '02 I believe, traded Briere for Gratton and never seem to get batter lately.

4&5. Toronto /Columbus/Washington/Philly - enough mediocrity to be passed around.

Can I add the Detroit Lions and Arizona Cardinals to this list?? :D

Bruins, Blackhawks, and Coyotes popped right into my head before opening this thread.

I wish all the origional six teams were competitive.... :(

Detroit - Best out of all original 6 teams; Stanley Cup contender

Montreal - Competitive; will challenge for playoffs, first or second round tops

New York - Competitive; will challenge for playoffs, conference final at absolute best

Boston - Slowly slipping into pathetic range; very small chance of playoffs

Toronto - Leaf Nation is in misery; very small chance of playoffs

Chicago - Miserable failure; no chance of playoffs

ehhh, i dont really see them making the playoffs but it could happen.

1. Chicago-When you've been around for 80+ years and have three championships to show for it, you know something is up. Add a crazy owner into the mix and you got a franchise going nowhere.

2. Phoenix/Winnipeg-Little success in Winnipeg, started to look good in Phoenix, but wen't all downhill from there

3. Los Angeles-Again, around all those years with limited success.

4. Washington-Good teams now and then, keyword: now and then

5. Florida-started off with a bang (cup finals) but never put a good team on the ice after that

How are the Islanders not on most people's lists? They have been a freak show for YEARS. Mike Milbury was involved, we shouldn't have to go any further, but we can! One of their previous ownership groups was a fraud. The league didn't do their homework and were embarrassed when the new "owners" couldn't come up with any money. Their current owner is a mess. Yashin's contract was an albatross, and now they've bought him out. DiPietro got a 15 YEAR contract (WTF). They hired and then fired Neil Smith as GM last summer. They hired Ted Nolan to coach before they hired Smith, so Smith didn't have a chance to hire his own coach. Then they hired Garth Snow--their backup goalie--to be the new GM. Their rink is a dump. They share second-fiddle status (with the Devils) behind the Rangers in the NYC market. Joke.

That said, they're nowhere near as bad as the Blackhawks.

1. Chicago. Someone needs to step up and force Wirtz to sell the team, it's the only thing that will save Chicago as a viable NHL hockey market. The Hawks get outdrawn by the AHL Wolves!

2. Islanders. See above.

3. Bruins. Despite the BEAUTIFUL new jerseys for next year, Jacobs (the new head of the BOG, help us...) has the O6 franchise in a shambles. One step forward, three steps back for this club.

4. Toronto. For every fan they have, they alienate 10. Everything they touch turns to s***. A real shame, considering Toronto is really the center of the hockey universe.

5. Can't really choose here. Phoenix isn't healthy. Nashville's in real trouble if the sale to Balsillie isn't approved... and they're gone if it is. Washington, see Phoenix. Relatively new ownership in St. Louis could provide results like in Ottawa. Thankfully Disney's out of the picture in Anaheim.

Can we count the NHL itself on this list? ;)

Blackhawks have got to be #1 on the list, followed by the Bruins. I don't think there are two more hated owners in hockey than Wirtz and Jacobs. I think the Leafs go on the list too. Too much complacency in Toronto, they're getting "Lions syndrome" where they know the fans still care and always will so why bother. The Coyotes and Panthers round out the list. They've been bad for too long and are spinning their wheels.

EDIT: And the Islanders. Somehow, though, they're having more success than these other teams, even though they have a very, um, unorthodox way of doing things. But yeah.....they're kind of a clown outfit the way Wang runs things.

In no particular order:

Blackhawks, Bruins, Toronto, Kings, and Coyotes.

Honorable mention to the Isles for their kooky ass lifelong contracts. Since the Yashin deal worked out so well, I guess they figured they'd go for it with DiPietro.

And I agree with betterRed, the NHL itself deserves honorable mention.

In terms of Toronto, it really depends on perspective. If you are a hockey fan, which obviously all of us are, the team is run very poorly. They are not managed how they should be to build a competitive team.

From a business perspective, it's hard to argue. They are the richest team in the league....however, wouldn't that be the case regardless of management? A team in Hamilton would probably force the Leafs to try and build a better hockey team.

I don't think Hatcher is gone from the Flyers. In fact, didn't TSN rank him as the best Penalty Killer in the league last season? If his knee is better than last season (and it was even better than the season before), then he should be just fine.

Hawks, Bruins, and Isles. Those are easy. Bad trades, stupid contracts, horrible ownership, minimal success.

After that, it gets a little tougher. Probably Washington for continually doing so little with so much (well, "so much" might be pushing it, but they always have a superstar or two). How about Columbus? Nice plan to build from within, but they never have got it right.
