GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 What do you guys think on how long Nick will stick around. Do you think that he'll play into his 40's like so many other great defensemen have done, or will he call it quits when his contract is up, which I believe is next year? Personally, I think that he has many years left where he can still put up huge numbers, but I don't see him as the type of guy that will be willing to stick around into his 40's, so I think this could be Lidstrom's final year. Heaton 1 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 He has said he wants to play until the 2010 Olympics.
stevie for president 42 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 he has nothing left to prove. 3 cups, a gold metal, a conn smythe, the norris should be renamed Lidstrom, and if he retired right now he would be a 1st ballot hall of famer and have his jersey retired. Who are the best defencemen of all time? 1. Bobby Orr. is lidstrom #2? not many dmen get attention so im kind of confused.

DreamsofHope 2 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 Next season will be his last ... If this is the case, I see the redwings struggling to maintain their dominance in the regular season after this year.
SweWings 45 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 He'll quite likely play until 2010 unless something drastically changes. After that he'll likely stay in Detroit as his kids have been born and grown up there and they don't really consider Sweden home. I think he should be able to pull that off. He's definitely durable enough. When it comes to how he'll be ranked - he's the best "modern" defenseman no doubt. But comparisons to previous eras are going to be tough and I don't think I want to get in on that considering how some other topics have turned out... DEVILSWATERBOY 10 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 Here is a question is his family in Michigan? If they are then I have to believe that he will stick around until they graduate out of high school any ways it is hopeful thinking

interminded 1 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 Of course he hasn't anything to prove. But he obviously enjoys hockey too much to even consider retirement. I think he'll play till the Olympics 2010 (the season 09/10 that is..) and then take it one step at a time.

redwingfan19 293 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 I'm pretty sure Lids is going to retire from the NHL after this contract. I think he will go back to Sweden and play there for a couple years till the Olympics then after that officially retire from hockey.
Williams29fan 6 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 .I think he will sign maybe a few 1 year contracts after he becomes a free agent, until the 2010 Olympics.

SweWings 45 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 ^^^^ Not sure on that one he has stated many times that he intends to move back to Sweden he really loves it there and misses it. Perhaps, but during the lockout they tried to live in Sweden but it didn't work out because of his family (his kids mainly). Not surprising Sweden is probably only a summer thing for them... Opie 308 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 When ever he leaves it will be a tough job to replace him. Think about it who else is out there that compares to him? It will take two men to replace what he does all alone, we as wings fans were blessed to be able to witness his abilities. In 15-25 years he will be talked about like Orr is talked about by us (those who didn't see Orr play) the difference will be in trying to explain a video tape of Lids playing to a newbie to the Hockey world. Orr you can show them the classic photo of him flying through the air and say this man changed hockey. Maybe that pic of Lids diving to save Grier's shot would do some justice. Wingsfan4life19 26 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 When ever he leaves it will be a tough job to replace him. Think about it who else is out there that compares to him? You can't replace Nick Lidstrom. We'll need 3 or 4 Dmen, who can play significant roles, in order to ttake Nick's spot. Like someone said, He'll probably play in Sweden a couple of years, then in the 2010 Olympics. I suppose it does depend on his kids schooling. Any idea how old they are? kylee 727 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 its hard to think about the Red Wings without Nick, but it was the same feeling about Steve. i dont want to think about it heh. but i hope he plays through 09/10, thatd be just awesome, but then again people in the thread are saying he will retire from hockey in that time, not the NHL? hmp.. Like someone said, He'll probably play in Sweden a couple of years, then in the 2010 Olympics. I suppose it does depend on his kids schooling. Any idea how old they are? I met his son at a family reunion of mine. One of those crazy connections, but it was my stepmom's family reunion, and his son is friends with my stepmom's brother's son's son. They also play on the same hockey team. If i remember correctly, he's around 11. Why he was there, i have no idea. Though if i was that age, i'd want my friend at a family reunion too. Also, his kids go to a Swedish style schooling that was set-up as part of his contract (if i remember correctly again). My guess is, he's back to Sweden asap unless somehow the Wings set-up a almost guaranteed cup winning roster.
WhiteLightning91 105 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 I'm pretty sure his kids play hockey. All I know is that one of them plays goalie. I don't know what the others play.
BigTex 1 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 Nobody can replace Lids, nobody. He's the best defenseman in the last 40 years. I pray he plays another 2-3 yrs. He seemed to really enjoy being a captain, maybe that's enough of a challenge that he'll want to do it for a few more.
Chase 0 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 I think lids will stick around a few more years. Like someone said before, it seems he enjoy being captain and likes the challenge of it. That should be enough alone to keep him around a few more.
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 According to this place he has been retiring for the last 5 seasons. Yeah, because people have been saying hes going to retire in the middle of a contract. I think hell sign a one year contract after this one and be done with the NHL. Echolalia 2,961 Report post Posted July 23, 2007 Hes not going to retire after this year. I think he would stay at least until we get Zetterberg locked up for another 5 years or so. But so what that he has nothing else to prove. Nobody plays hockey just to prove a point. Everyone who has ever laced up the skates initially did so for the fun of it, and even though it has become a career for Lids, it would be a very big decision to hang em up after this year, and never play at a level where his skills can flourish. Hes healthy as an ox, especially for a defensman and especially at his age, and although he won't play as long as caveman Chelios, it will be more than just this year.
