Detroit Lions Preseason Thread

Bengals 26 - Lions 27. Just watched the game, had my dad tape it since I work 2nd shift and I have to admit I am really pumped right now. Great comeback. I was in my usual preseason mode of just watching certain players and seeing how they fit in but when they started to make a comeback I got into the actual game. Calvin Johnson looked great, nice back to back catches from O'Sullivan.

I have to say Martz is the best offensive coordinator in the league hands down. He has got the morbid Lions franchise rolling with excitement not seen since the Barry days. I know it's only preseason, but with detroit we have to start somewhere and experiencing winning at any kind of level can only be good.

While it was nice to see the lions comeback, still preseason and they still have a lot to prove to me before i will ever get my hopes up again.

I was totally shocked that we actually pulled out the win. Sure its just preseason. But its still nice to start out on a winning note. And maybe that will give them just a little more confidence. Bell looked pretty good. And suprisingly, O' Sullivan looked solid. It would have been nice to have a healthy Drew Stanton. I would like to have seen his how his game looks. Overall we looked so-so. Hopefully we can just get through these next 3 games without injury. Cause looking at our schedule, we're gonna need every healthy body we can get.

All I know, is a healthy Kevin Jones, with a Tatum Bell, means we will FINALLY have a good running back core. I have no doubts that our WRs will be on their game. The key factor for any Lions success, is gonna be whether we will have a running game finally. Other then MAYBE this season, we have done nothing to solidify our running game since Barry Sanders. And come on, that was almost a decade ago. But like I said, if we actually have a fully healthy Kevin Jones, and Tatum Bell, for once in a looooonnnggg time we might actually have a running game.

Kevin Jones is out the first 6 games of the season. Hopefully Tatum Bell can overcome fumbling problems and TJ Duckett can pound it in to give us a DECENT run game. Our passing game has to give us breathing room to run the ball hopefully.

If you watched last night, apparently Duckett is the one we have to worry about fumbling.

KJ is out for the first 6 games of the regular season. But it sure is damn nice to finally have some depth! They finally got smart and realized having some no names as backups isnt going to cut it! To actually have Bell AND Duckett...its like woah. Its a really nice combo too, homerun threat with alot of speed...and the big power back.

The entire fate of this season rests on whether you really dont need good corners for the Tampa 2 system. Seeing Bryant get torched makes me worry. Im confident even with the O-line issues that the offense will do its job, but that secondary....ugh i dont know.

tatum bell is a quality back. Not sure anymore about Duckett. If he can be another Zack Crockett like the Raiders had during their Rich Gannon years, then I will be happy.

Who knows. Maybe Duckett can be a Mike Alstott type back. Once Kevin gets healthy. We can come at teams with a Kevin Jones/Tatum Bell one-two punch. And if we need to pound it in with any short yard situations, we have a monster in Duckett. For once in 10 years, im actually fairly happy with our RB core. But as was stated above, Im not so sure yet on our secondary. Especially after losing such a key defender in Dre Bly. But Im still stoked for the season to start.

What Preseason game will Calvin Johnson get hurt in?

If Calvin ends up being another Charles Rogers injury-wise. Im gonna get the noose ready for myself. Cause I cant take another WR flop. First Rogers, then Mike Williams. Hopefully the trend does not continue. I dont think it will though. In fact, I wouldnt be suprised to see Calvin upstage big Roy.

Whoops, my bad. I can't believe with 3 second round picks one is on the IR, and the other two are role players at best....I'm starting to worry about the season again.

Drew Stanton probably wouldnt have played this regular season anyway. Kitna, while not a great QB, is reliable. I worry what the Lions would do if Kitna was injuried for a long time.

Hell, I wonder what the Lions will do WITH Kitna in there. Kitna just isnt a good QB. He's decent at best. Unless he proves me wrong big time this year. Which he should have a good chance of doing, considering the talent we have at the WR position. If he cant flourish with this offense, then he will never do it. But yeah, even with a healthy Drew Stanton, it would still be Kitna's job. But it sure would be nice to have Stanton if Kitna gets hurt. Cause like you said, if Kitna gets hurt, then we're REALLY in trouble.

Kitna is gonna have a better season then people give him credit. Pick him up for your fantasy football team this year.

I agree with you. You don't have to be a big name QB when you have Martz. Martz turned Bulger, and Warner into house hold names in a matter of no time.

The running game will be interesting. Still have questions about Bell. He seems like a solid RB, but you can't judge how he did in the past because he played for Denver. I think we all remember Olandis Gary. I think Duckett will do a solid job when called upon. Nothing amazing like what he used to do, but still above average. I just hope KJ can get healthy sometime. He looked so promising when he joined the league.

One quick note: I don't think Kevin Jones has to miss the first six games of the season. He's on the PUP list, but I think it works differently in the preseason...all it means is that he hasn't passed his physical yet. If he passes it, they can remove him from the list. But if you start the regular season on PUP, then you have to miss the first six games and the team has like 3 weeks after that to activate the player or put him on IR.

I actually saw an article today that said they think Jones could be back for the opener.

It doesn't matter who's carrying the ball. Bell and Jones will both do well if the O-line steps up. They'll both suck if the O-line is up to its usual tricks. This offense is supposedly explosive, but what do we really have? A genius in the booth and Hall of Fame talent out wide. Our running backs have potential but are still mostly unproven, the quarterback has never led a winning team all his life, and the offensive line is, uh, the Lions offensive line. If Foster and Mulitalo are what they're cracked up to be, and if Woody ever turns into what he was cracked up to be, and if Raiola stops getting plowed by opposing defensive tackles, and if Backus' porcelain ankles have been replaced with something that won't collapse the moment the season starts, then the offense can put up 40 points a game and we won't even care that our cornerbacks can't cover bread with butter. If not, the Millen Era will still fall well short of 30 wins in 7 years. (Hint: He's at 24 now.)

I don't understand what people are basing this off of.

Kitna is 34, and has never been a quality NFL QB. Mike Martz or not, he's not a good QB. I'd be very surprised to see him have a good season this year, like many predict.

Tomorrow should be interesting. I wonder if Cleveland plans on playing Quinn at all.

Im with ya 100%. I will be aboslutely shocked if Kitna has a great year. I expect Kitna to pick up, right where he left off last season. A very mediocre(at best) QB. Even with all the WR weapons we have.

I just watched the Lions s***stomp (for most the game) the Browns with 6 Browns fans. Even if it was preseason, it was almost as good as watching the Lions beat the Cowboys in Dallas last season with my Cowboys roomie. You have no idea how satisfying that was.

Now we just need to win this next one, my g/f is a Colts fan.

Almost blew that one away! 20 unanswered points by Cleveland in the 4th. Thought I was watching the 2006 Lions if you know what I mean. ;)

It's nice they won, but like stated by others before, it's only preseason. I'm not ready to drink the Lions kool-aid yet at this point.
