Grigorenko update

There seemed to be a lot of talk in the pre-season that Grigs would slink away back to Russia if he didn't make the Wings. Also, I read a recent article claiming that he looked at a conditioning stint in GR as a demotion, and that GR was not an option for him...but then I heard that he would be going to GR, but could come back in about 3 weeks after conditioning.

So, what's the real deal? Will he report to GR? Is he headed back the Russia? If he doesn't get called back up to the Wings, will he pull a disappearing act? I haven't read anything yet that has given me any definitive answer.

Any info is appreciated.

If Grigs goes there will be trouble

And if he stays it will be double

Hehe... In all seriousness though it just seems like he needs to get into shape - which is sort of weird considering that this is Grigs big chance...we'll see what happens...

no he has to go down to the griffins right now, but in his contract if he is in the ahl after november 1st he can go back. but by all the interviews i've read, i dont think hes goin anyway because of what he has said and what datsyuk has probably said to him to get him to stay, and i think he will be called up before november 1st

If he gets called up by November, I'll eat my hat.

Why's that? Did he look that bad to you? Or do you think that he won't be able to crack the lineup. The guy has got to have some talent...he has gotten absolutely glowing reviews from scouts (albeit not very recently). How bad of shape is he in? I didn't get to see him in pre-season.

Grigs reminds me of Daigle there was so much hype around this kid that he started to read and believing his own press,it might just be that he thought it would be alot easier then it is and now its time for a reality check. Time to work boy if you want a spot if not ,I say go back home and give a chance to a kid who has paid his dues.

Well judging from the preseason he seems to possess the speed and stamina of Robert Lang after a Thanksgiving feast...he came to training camp at something like 5'10" 215 lbs, so unless he plans on sumo wrestling opposing players into submission I think he'll be best-served setting up shop on the exercise bike.

red feather and all? hahahaha

what kind of hat is it :)

It's a bread bowl, filled with a delicious chicken salad. I haven't actually worn it yet, but I consider it a hat.

From what I've heard and read, he's out of shape, lazy and has a bad attitude. I don't see Babcock rewarding him so soon.

Except for Grigs was drafted absolutly no where near the spot that Daigle was, and Daigle didn't almost die in a car accident.

He is working, that's what he's doing right now. he's already in G.R., and he hasn't bad mouthed or had a bad attitude about anything. I'm not so sure as to where any of that would be coming from or who wrote it, but pretty much every article I've read he's willing to do whatever it takes to make the Wings. He's admited (to that russian reporter guy who's articles sometimes appear translated on mlive) that the game is way different and faster and it's something he's got to get used to. The front office has said he'll be up after 5 games or so. I assume that means 5 games in G.R. which is probably 2 or 3 weeks. I think it's so silly when the guy's been in the system for a month and he's already labled and lumped into the "lazy, bad attitude, greedy" mold. I'm willing to bet alot of people will be eating more than hats when he's put on the roster and given a legit shot out there.

...lazy and has a bad attitude...

Care to back that one up with some evidence??? Or are you just one of those posters who posts what they think hoping nobody will ever ask them to back it up with some facts...

Out of shape...yea...he was, I'll give you that one. But lazy and has a bad attitude? I read through every article on MLive and have never seen anyone claim Igor is "lazy and has a bad attitude."

Not sure where this lazy and bad attitude thing is coming from. Yes, he did come to camp a bit out of shape, but I think he was taken back a bit by how "in shape" everyone was arriving at camp. I attended training camp and saw him work hard and get along with everyone there. No signs of laziness or bad attitude. He has stated he will do what it takes to play in Detroit even if it meant starting off in the AHL. Not seeing the bad attitude in that...

To me it, showing up to camp out of shape may be an indicator of laziness or a bad attitude. But than again maybe he just underestimated the NHL. I'm going to give the dude some time before I argue for or against him. Although I would love it if those of you that say he is legit are correct. :D

How do you get out of shape if you're not lazy?

And I'd call his desire to go home and play in Russia if he's not given a spot on the NHL roster a good indication of a bad attitude. I don't get the sense that this guy cares about making the Red Wings better and winning the Stanley Cup. He just wants to star treatment without earning it and a big payday (certainly not in the AHL).

So far, I've seen more reasons to be skeptical of this guy's future with us than reasons to like him.

Grigs' contract has an out clause that says if he isn't on the NHL roster a month into the season, he can go back to Russia. He has a family, and a million dollars is a heck fo a lot better for a family than 75,000.

Well for starters i bet there is a heck of a lot of cultural differences to take into consideration.. I bet his picture of a training camp is that you train for the upcoming season, much more than he thought.. And to me it seems hes willing to do quite a lot to get a chance to play in NHL. And as others have already said, what would you do if you were in his situation? Think about that for a while, a child and wife, none of you even know the language, and if you decide to go homw a big fat paycheck awaits you, and safety, a culture you know well, your home and family are close.. I could go on. Not everything in life is hockey you know, i think Igor knows that quite well considering his history.

How do you come back from the devastating injuries like has if he's lazy?

Igor isn't out of shape like you or I are out of shape. The RSL is a different league from the NHL. There they use training camp to get into game shape, whereas here you'd better already be in shape. And that's NHL game shape which is a completely different animal from RSL game shape. Shifts over there are longer, slower, and more tactical rather than all out up and down skating/hitting/etc... He's used to pacing himself and you just don't do that here. Had the Wings had his visa in order, he could have figured that out during the rookie conditioning camp during the summer rather than during training camp. C'est la vie.

He already took a pay cut to sign with the Wings. The move to the AHL has dropped that lowered pay by another 90%. There is no reason for him to stick around in the AHL toiling away when it isn't a better league than the RSL. The AHL won't help him get up to NHL speed, which is his only trouble so far.
