Curious to see who everyone's top 5 best fighters are. Notnecessarily who's having the best year so far, just who you think the best are. My list right now would be:

1) Georges Laraque

2) Donald Brashear

3) Derek Boogaard

4) Brian McGrattan

5) DJ King

King might seem like an odd choice, as he doesnt really have the big wins like the others, but i consider him to be like one of those college football teams who just continues to climb up the rankings without a really good strength of schedule...like a Boise St type.

I like your list, although I'd probably put D.J. King ahead of McGrattan, and would put Godard at number 5. You nailed the top 3, but I still hesitate calling someone a fighter when they fight 5 times a season, and bearhug 4 out of those 5 fights. But, I guess that's the way it is now in the NHL. Oh and yeah, Lilja's not yet in my top 5, but when these other guys stop ducking him, then he'll probably be on this list.

RIght now, other than owning George Parros, King doesnt really have that BIG name on his win list. So its hard for me to vault him over McGrattan....although i do think King has the ability. A shame the scheduling sucks cause i'd love to see him tangling with Laraque, McGrattan, Orr, etc. Godard's definitely in my top 10, although i didnt really like his showing against Semenov.

D.J. King last year beat Shelley, Parker, Hordichuk, Shawn Thornton, etc. In fact, he's beaten everyone except for Boogard in their fight last year, where he held his own. Another guy to think about even though he never fights anymore is Chris Simon. I can still see him beating anyone in the league.

Those really arent big names imo. Shelley's a big guy but really isnt that good, and Thornton is a bottom tier heavy as is Hordichuk. Parker i guess can count, but when the last time he's really done anything... its not like beating the Parker of old. I dont want to sound like im trying to discredit King, as he's one of my favorites right now and i see him being top of the heap material. Just saying he hasnt really proven himself yet against the real good heavies to be ranked any higher than 5 at this point. The one great guy he fought, he lost to. So we'll see, i'd love to see him come out this year and beat Boogey!

Agree on Chris Simon. Other than Laraque, I think on any given night he could beat anybody in the league.

After Laraque got knocked down by Brashear, i think he'll be on a mission to take it to Boogaard. I say Laraque will put the hurtin' on him.

my current top 10 is

1 Georges Laraque

2 Donald Brashear

3 Derek Boogaard

4 Brian McGrattan

5 Andrew Peters

6 Wade Belak

7 Colton Orr

8 D.J. King

9 Eric Godard

10 Raitis Ivanans

until its about mid season I don't really plan on changing anything.. Peters hasn't done much this year so his spot in the top 5 is in jeopardy, Godard is active but not dominating subpar opponents, Belak isn't dressing... sucks balls Laraque isn't even playing tonight I had this game bookmarked for a long time

Looks like a pretty good list to me, but for 2 names. Belak at one point i thought was borderline top 5 but that was a few years ago. I dont feel like he's a top 10'er any more. The other one i'd question is Ivanans, i think he's on the lower tier of the heavyweight spectrum.

I agree, Belak has been too timid ever since Orr broke his nose. He can still throw with anybody, but his fights are usually boring nowadays.

Yeah now that you mention it, his decline does seem to have started around the time of that fight. I used to think Belak was an entertaining player, but now he just seems like one of those fighters you dont really care about anymore..kinda like Jody Shelley. His fight with Koci was great, but other than that he hasnt been anything special.

Belak is hard to rate because he is seldomly dressed and doesn't always open up but he can still go with the best of them.. hung with McGrattan last year, win over Peters, win over Orr, win on Brash... he can beat any top 10 HW on any given night so I just wouldn't feel right leaving him out of my top 10

as for Ivanans... theres a few HWs you could throw in the 10th slot I suppose, Thornton, Roy, Shelley, Parros... I just like Ivanans because he had some nice showings last year and he hung with Laraque and Boog

I was worried about Belak after his fight with Orr in '05 but IMO he redeemed himself in '06 when he dominated Orr in a slugfest and then went toe to toe and edged Brashear the same week...hasn't lost since then

Should be seeing King vs Boogaard once again tonight! Wouldnt be suprised to see them go twice, unless the first fight is a real war.

Go get him King!
