The Official List of Hat Tricks

Howe never had a game with a goal, and assist and a fighting major, but the hat trick is still named after him.

Are you sure it wasn't in OT?

Positive. I've always argued that most 5 goal games are more impressive than what Mario did. His was a fluke of situations (even strength, power play, shorthanded, penalty shot, and empty net). An anomoly that is rare, but less impressive than say Fedorov's where the 5th was an OT winner and not into an empty net. Much like hitting a double, triple, and two homers is more impressive than hitting for the cycle, but less celebrated as the cycle is "unique".

According to Wikipedia (RAYOR) Howe had a Gordie Howe Hat Trick on 12/22/55. Lemieux's 5th goal was empty net (the others being power play, short handed, even, and penalty shot).

Since it's Wiki, I believe it until told otherwise. :)

I've heard that he never actually had one, but I haven't done any research on it.

OH OH! NOW I REMEMBER THE FORSBERG ONE.

ahem...

The Peter Forsberg Hattrick:

A goal, an assist, and a debilitating injury.

I forget where that one came from - I think TSN....

i thought the mario lemieux hat trick was one goal, one assist, and radiation therapy all in the same day.

I say the Steve Yzerman hat trick should be having your jersey number retired, getting a road named after you, and getting your humble personality booed by 20,000+ fans that think you are a god amongst men

Don't forget that Sergei's were the team's only 5 goals, that adds to the impressive factor IMO.

Wikipedia is a good place to start, but one shouldn't stop there. There might be subtle difference. Rob the Badger says a fighting major, but Wikipedia says "got into a fight." So maybe Howe got into a fight, or even picked up a minor penalty, but not a major.

I've heard that he never actually had one, but I haven't done any research on it.

Seems like I read or heard he had, or maybe I just assumed it.

Anyway I'm curious now to know the truth.

According to this Evan Weiner article he did.

I've always heard a Gordie Howe Hat Trick referred to as one goal, one assist and one fight, not a fighting major.

If you get into a fight, there should be a fighting major penalty to go along with it. If it doesn't get recorded on the stat sheet, how will anyone remember it happened years down the road?

Same why everyone knows Babe Ruth hit a homerun with two strikes on him, and to not be shown up by the pitcher he pointed to centerfield and on the next pitch he hit a bomb to centerfield. There is no recorded evidence of that but the people at that game say it happened. Or we can even talk about when Wilt got 100 points and there were no reporters at the game but the crowd at that game made a big deal of it and now it's taken as fact.

Not all fights get the major. Most do, but some will only draw matching minors if they aren't worthy of the major.

All three of the colleges I've gone to won't allow wiki to be used as a source. but it's great for finding reference links.

I remember reading that Gordie Howe never got credited for an actual Gordie Howe hat trick. So maybe he did have a goal, assist, + fight night, and just never got official credit for it. I wonder where I can look to find the official story of the whole thing.

I thought that this 'cartoon' might inspire some conversation, but I didn't think that it would take off in this direction. Hmm.

I don't know a single college or university that will allow wikipedia to be used as a source, at least not a credible college or university

And also we needed all 5 goals to win the game...that was impressive imo. I loved that game. I used to have it on tape...don't know if I still do....
