Guest Jeremy88 Report post Posted October 20, 2007 Well, I'm actually really glad we've got Downey. I think we need more guys who will bring that kind of hockey to the table if we're gonna win the cup Go Downey and Drake!
Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted October 20, 2007 Great article. Now for all the guys that say enforcers arent needed, LISTEN TO WHAT ZETTERBERG SAID! I want to see some more of that, were the kinda team that always makes comebacks, fights that have meaning behind them, give us that momentum. There are only 3 things that get a team really excited. 1.) A fight 2.) a defensive forward scoring (Drake,Maltby,Ellis, etc.) 3.) a big hit Now we have the players for all three, this should be an entertaining season. Wings_Dynasty 267 Report post Posted October 20, 2007 (edited) Here is some praise from Z and Babs about Downey's recent play and the McDouchebag fight. Miss fights? Meet Aaron Downey Exerpts: "I don't like seeing guys taking liberties with my teammates, and it's not going to happen (any) more, as long as I'm in the lineup," Downey said Friday. "I didn't like what McLaren was doing in that game," Downey said. "You got to send a message. And I'm sending a message right now. No one's going to be messing with this team this year. If anyone touches our skilled guys, I'm going to be there for them." "It's great to see," Zetterberg said. "I think all of us got a little extra energy when he did that and it was a great fight. It changed the momentum back to our side. It doesn't happen that often, but now we've had four fights this year (Drake has the other three). It's good, it belongs in the game. The fans like it and we like it, too." "I thought that (fight) was really good, but I also thought that all the games he's played he's been effective," Babcock said. "He knows how to play. He's never going to be accused of being overly skilled or overly fast, but he is overly determined and he's a great team guy, says good things and does good things and makes our team better." I just saw this thread here but since my arictle is a little different it shouldn't be too much of a problem. zettsyukwall415 0 Report post Posted October 20, 2007 I thought this part was pretty funny. Zetterberg was asked if he's ever gotten into a fight. "Just with his sister," teammate Kirk Maltby said, as he walked by. Responded Zetterberg, "World Championships with Malts. I kicked his (butt)."

daniel1 32 Report post Posted October 20, 2007 Downey will give the team a lift and guys like him are usually locker room "glue", they keep everybody loose, aren't afraid to laugh at themselves or prank somebody either. I played with a tough guy who once cut up pictures of male underwear models and stuffed them in the coaches briefcase, then undid the latches when it was sitting on the bench after a game (we were on a losing streak at the time), the briefcase spilled open and all these cut out undies shots came flying out. It was hilarious and broke the tension we had all been feeling, the coach laughed his ass off and knew exactly who did it, although he couldn't prove it. We had a great bus ride home, gelled and bonded a bit, then won 5 games in a row. Guys like Z, Dats, and Flip will love having Downey on the team and will enjoy playing the game more; thus play better too. I hope he sticks here for the year. By the way, I have head Parros is the King of Comedy in the Ducks room... he does an amazing Al Swearinger impersonation apparently... now THAT would be fun to watch. I noticed that mark during the game Thursday, too. I figured that it was a result of the butt-end he got from Rob Niedermayer on a faceoff during Monday's game. (The one that wasn't called and then seconds later Detroit was called for a minor.)

I think that in a fight Maltby would probably win though. Why is the word 'butt' in parenthesis? They do that to words all the time and it doesn't make sense. Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted October 20, 2007 I feel the Zetterberg comments are so significant for us pro fight guys that i decided to replace my one about Holland! Now i'll be able to point to it all year when someone says fights have no impact on a game...I love it. Right on Lou. To here it from Zetterberg's mouth is fantastic. Even though we've heard it from every great player forever such as Gretzky and Yzerman for some reason people still just aren't convinced. It's also important what Babcock said, which echoed the comments I made defending Downey this past week, that he's been very effective and not been a liability on the ice. Where's the Kopecky article? Where are his teammates voicing their appreciation for what he brings? As of right now, Downey has earned 1-2 minutes worth of Kopa's ice time IMO. If Kopa wants to play 8-12 minutes per game he goddamned well better start doing something other than falling down whenever he comes into contact with somebody. Lamothe 5 Report post Posted October 20, 2007 OH YEAHHH! Downey! This is what I like to see and love to hear. He'll never be anything amazing, but man is it nice to have such a positive guy on this team who will stand up for his mates. Worth every penny of his 525k contract lol. wingnut40 176 Report post Posted October 20, 2007 It's because Zetterberg did not say butt............! You mean he said ASS!!!?? HA, Hank's a sick player, but fighting wise he's a pansy. Glad we got guys like Downey, Drake, Draper, Maltby, and Cleary who will defend teammates. I remeber in one of the games in the duck series Rob Neidermayer was pushing Nick and Cleary comes over, pushes Neidermayer, and then punches him square in the face. Yemack 1 Report post Posted October 20, 2007 I must admit. I thought Scrappers were dying breeds of hockey and fighting doesn't play significant role in hockey anymore. Now I have changed my minds about 'Tough guys' I hope Holland changes his mind to after sharks game. Good to see Downey is also contributing in other areas. He maybe a great addition to our team. I guess this makes Babcock's decision a lot harder about who to dress.

redwingfan19 293 Report post Posted October 20, 2007 So, seems the coach and players like Downey. That should put the whole we don't need an enforcer issue to rest. I remember someone saying the Downey fight had nothing to do with the out come of that game. "It's great to see," Zetterberg said. If Kopa wants to play 8-12 minutes per game he goddamned well better start doing something other than falling down whenever he comes into contact with somebody. You all need to chill out about Kopecky. There is a reason Babcock is putting him out there instead of Downey. Maybe because Downey has absolutely zero talent other than fighting? Give Kopecky a chance, we're not even a month into the season yet. Downey gets his few minutes of ice time each game, gets in a fight, gets under a few peoples skin... and he's happy and so are you guys. They don't need him out there for more than 5 minutes a game in any sort of role other than what he's in right now.
wingnut40 176 Report post Posted October 20, 2007 Downey & Drake OK - I agree Cleary - 50% / 50% Draper & Maltby - No way... Well, the other night when Maltby was whacked in the face with a stick Draper and Lilja ran in there and started killing people. I guess Malts is a bit of a pest and all he does is trash talk, but if one of our boys was getting attacked you can bet Maltby would jump all over them. Why do we call them boys any way? They're grown men.

Its really great to hear it from a skilled european player like this. If the comments came from a guy like Cleary itd be nice, but would have nowhere near the impact on the people here. I love the fact that Zetterberg, a european guy who'd never ever fight himself, sees the benefit of it. It goes right along with what guys like us have been saying, how guys fighting and sticking up for each other is beneficial to momentum and morale. One of my other favorite pro fight comments was from Teemu Selanne 2 seasons ago, who pointed to the Beauchemin win over Iginla as the turning point of their playoff series. Hank just earned alot of points with me! Lou, Downey has convinced me that the Red Wing players want a tough guy. I think he'll be great for this season. However, I also think that at the next available opportunity, we should get a real heavyweight. I have no problem with getting an upgrade in the fighting department, but what are the realistic odds that the Wings will use a guy who's a legit heavy? (and god forbid...not the greatest skater in the world, which most obviously arent) The Downey/Roy types is really the best we're going to do in that area.
