Jason Williams used to be one of my favorite wings. I know that he never really lived up to his potential (except for two years ago maybe) but do you think it was really worth it to trade him away to a division foe (even though they suck) for Kyle Calder? Its easy to look at the trade now and think it was awful just because of how productive calder was for us, but i think that williams would have fit in well with our team this year, and if nothing else he was a solid second or third liner that could score. I just think if your gonna trade for a rent-a-player, that player should be a little better than calder and you shouldnt give up a guy like williams.

williams sucked here... didnt fit in well... cost us too much money. if we still had him here we'd only have around 2 mil in cap room for the deadine... we dont need him.

Williams would chip in with a goal here and there but really he was plain ordinary. Just too many turnovers that would undo all of his good work.

I liked Jason, but probably only because he was canadian, not even my Red Wings bias could help me, I knew how bad a player he was. He and Lang are doing good in Chicago and Im happy for them.

But for the most part yeah, guys that leave the Wings usually leave on good terms and you still cheer for them.

we have huds,flipper, and kopy, and all are better or as good as williams, we didnt need him. Dont get me wrong, i liked him, but we got so many young players we are developing, that we are running out of room. Williams is not going to get to much better, so we got rid of him. Our other young players have lots more potiental than he does, thats all.

anyways i think it's better than he's with the hawks, he gets more ice time, so he'll probably get a little more goals too.

I just find it so humorous that our two biggest scapegoats now play for Chi-Town. Seeing them succeed there beyond expectations is good though, both guys mean no harm.

I think it would be a stretch to say that Williams was a legit second line scoring threat. He is a solid skater with good speed, and decent hands. He just doesn't have the ability to score consistently at the NHL level. He ate up too much cap space and didn't give enough return. Moving Williams, IMO, was a necessity for the Wings to re-sign Dats and Z.

I know Lang's played well against us this year, but it shouldn't be a surprise. He's in the NHL and is a good hockey player. Thinking that we'd only have one regular season loss so far if Lang wasn't on Chicago is unrealistic. It's Hasek's rough start that cause those two loses more so than Lang's goals.

Trading Williams was addition by subtraction. He was playing terrible. But it did seem, to me, to maybe be a psychological/confidence-type issue, so a change of scenery might've been just the ticket for him.

i never said he would, but he is still better than williams ( that is as long as he dont hurt him self )

He absolutely sucked here last year, he's a defensive liability, he doesn't really fit into any role, and he had another year left on his contract.

I'm glad he's gone.

It wasn't so much a Williams for Calder deal. It was a move to get rid of Williams salary.

By making the trade the Wings had the option to dump Calder and were no longer on the hook for Williams $1.6 million this season.

I would like to remind everyone of something - Williams was a colossal *****. Any team that even threatens to hit him or has harsh words for him is going to render him pretty much ineffective. After that Torres hit knocked him goofy he was never the same player. He seems to have regained some of his confidence in Chicago, but he also has Lapointe and Koci to protect him and make a feel a few pounds heavier, here he was on his own.

He's a skilled player and the Hawks got the better of that deal for sure, but I don't believe he would have ever regained his confidence or scoring touch here in Detroit. It's better for us that he left rather than stayed and better for him too.

Williams was as boring a player as it gets. Good for shoot-outs, and beyond that he brought nothing better to the team. He brings NO intangibles to this team and nothing that it doesnt already have.

Which means given the same circumstances, Kopecky should be able to score close to 50 points in the NHL in a few years just as Williams did. Not saying it will happen, but the fact that he has similar scoring history to Williams indicates it is far from impossible.
