Matty Ellis. Regular or not?

I don't know if there is another topic going on about this but what the heck

OK

it seems people are taking interests in Grig and Downey but what about Ellis?

Given very limited role I think he passed coach's expectation with flying color. (and mine too) Do you think this guy deserves a regular spot on this team? I sure Do but again we have quite a few promising prospects and Ellis has some competition among veterans as well (Drake). I would guess that if he were on the other lesser teams he would have made pretty solid 3rd line player right away.

Also I dont know why but, Ellis reminds of Quincey last year. some what lanky dudes both of them, but dependable and make safe plays.

So what do you guys think? did he earn his privillage or is he just a dependable backup player? I would say at least that his fine plays and good hustle put some pressure on Franzen, Drake and Kopecky

He deserves a spot.

It's always good to see guys who have that working-class mentality get a spot here, since we need more players like him. Ellis is proving he deserves to stay on this team. He kinda was going to anyways (he couldn't clear waivers) but his hard work and good play is making it all the more easier for management to keep him.

The Wings problem is the 2nd line, but I know Holland will never get rid of any of those 3. So we can pretty much expect to see Downey being bid farewell by next week for Grigorenko. It's a sad shame in my opinion, but I don't want to derail the main point of this discussion, which is Ellis.

lol, there is no way Franzen and Drake are coming out of the lineup, especially Franzen. Kopecky sucks and should be cut/sent down immediately, but there is 0% chance the other two miss games unless they're injured (which, oddly enough, they both are right now).

Oh, and yes, he should stay on the team at Downey/Samuelsson/Grigorenko's expense.

Ellis has been wonderful so far this year. He indeed is beginning to look like Cleary--a very complete player. He'll probably never put up huge numbers, but I think he'll be a mid-range scorer with lots of grit, energy and physical play. Also, I've little doubt he'll become a very good two-way player.

Honestly, my only problem with Ellis right now is his lack of balance behind the net... he ends up on the ice every time. But hey, he does seem to get some chances out of it.

Other than that, he's exciting to watch and he has been much more dynamic this year. Plus, dump-and-chase guys are rare on this team so its nice to keep opponents guessing.

Keep dreaming if you think ellis will replace Sammy, Ellis def deserves a spot on the roster though, and I would agree with you that maybe he deserves it more than Kopecky right now.

What is the damn deal with people not so much ridiculously hating on Samuelsson, but more on the lack of understanding of his role on the team, as well as the concept of different players having different roles on a roster?

Ellis is not here, at least for now, to score 20 - 25 goals. He's here to provide checking/energy/hustle first and foremost. If he scores more, great, but that's not his primary role.

Samuelsson has developed into a 2nd line scoring role in his time here. He's not your main scoring threat, but he can be counted on to pick up the slack on a 2nd/3rd line. If others supposedly suited for that 2nd line could consistently produce (i.e. Flipper or Hudler), then Samulesson could be expendable. Right now, they aren't producing, and he has been for the most part. He's doing his job.

Ellis would not effectively replace Samulesson b/c for now that isn't Ellis' game.

Ellis' production so far has been a good bright spot. He's taking advantage of some injuries right now in limited playing time, especially with Drake's injury as the two seem to have comparable playing styles. Once everybody is healthy, I'd like to see Ellis/Downey/Drake compete for playing time.

So far, kind of by default due to Drake's injury and a little more playing time than Downey, Ellis has taken advantage so far if you compare the 3. Too early though to consider him a full regular though I think.

I hope he keeps it up though.

It seems like some people on these boards believe that if a player isn't a big time goal scorer and isn't a fighter, than they aren't useful.

Ellis should be a healthy scratch come in when someone isnt performing well. hez decent but id much rather have Kopo in. Kopo has potential to be a PWF. and maybe he will beef up a lil.. learn a lil from Drake/Downey and stick up for his mates. yah know..

Im not sold on Ellis and im not gettting off the Kopo train until someone really wows me.. and ellis hasnt made me orgasm yet.

Kopecky has about as much potential of being a powerforward as Kirk Maltby does landing the Rocket Richard.

Thats sounds about right.. so unless Maltby can score 2 goals a game for the rest of the season I would much rather have Ellis than Kopecky.. Ellis has done nothing but impress me so far this season and I hardly ever even notice Kopecky in the game.

Define mid-range. Maltby's career season in points was 37 (14 G, 23 A) and I think that's going to be the upper ceiling of what Ellis can accomplish too.

that's about what I expect, except that I don't see him having an 11 point year down the road... once he hits that 30-40 point plateau he will stay there

Guest Canadian Wings

Is it just me or would you rather have Ellis > Drake?

Although Ellis > Kopecky for more Canadian flavor doesn't sound too bad ;)

i was hoping for Kopecky to pick it up...

but i much rather have Ellis... Kopecky has been our worst player this year...

I had to chime in on this one. Kopecky has had little ice time this year. He is not on the power play, nor penalty kill. He has only averaged 8 minutes per game, so far this year. Babcock has said he wants to get Kopecky more time, but it took him to game 5 to have over 10 minutes for a game. You do earn your ice time, but at the same time, you have to have ice time to earn more. All that extra time given Zetterberg/Datsyuk/Holmstrom is at the expense of the fourth line. Babcock shortens his bench a lot. Kopecky is still basically a rookie, because he was hurt for a large part of last year. It is a little early to be dumping on him.
