It's a case of a handful of nickels trying to get a dollar but I'd try for a deal of Kronwall, Filppula, Quincey, Emmerton, and a 1st for Ilya (with an assurance he'd re-sign). If it ever gets to a point of trading Ilya away, they'll want as many pieces for the future as possible. Granted Kronwall is a couple years older than Ilya, but what can you do? it does help somewhat that Waddel gutted their farm at the last deadline. Undoubtedly other teams can come up with better packages, but yeah. That's what I'd offer (or work my way up to, you never know if he's crazy enough to take less...). norrisnick 1 Report post Posted October 24, 2007 Why wasn't I surprised to see Filppula's name there instead of Hudler's? Because he has more trade value than Hoodlum? I'd wave good bye to anyone but Z and Nick for Ilya f'n Kovalchuk...

TheBadOne 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2007 how about? Hell, if we're getting into fictitious enforcers... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6wKapwxh-w Though to be honest, there's a guy out there who's probably a better match... Say what you will, but if this isn't proof that fights can be used to win hockey games, I can't help you...
Opie 308 Report post Posted October 25, 2007 That wasn't proof that fights win Hockey games, that was proof that a player will stand up for another on his team. I have been a staunch Downey non-supporter, but I will say him sticking up for his players gave them a good boost of energy. But that energy had nothing to do with the third goal. That was a fluke backhander that after it went in had more shark players hanging their heads and zapped more energy from them than when Lids hit the 100'-er to start the demise of the Canucks in 02. The body language of every shark player told the story. They were deflated! Now had the game been 2-0 or 3-0 sharks and then Downey fought and then the wings came back I would be the first person on here eating crow. However that fight didn't have an impact on the score of the game. It did energize the guys, but that 3rd goal was not a goal created by the energy the team had. RedWings Gone Wild 6 Report post Posted October 25, 2007 We got Downey and Drake to add toughness to the team (and yes, I'm aware Drake is old and not well suited for the role)... As it is they have one point between them, and haven't done much else other than fight. I'm sorry, but adding more "toughness" to the team isn't going to make us better. At this point we have one line that's essentially carrying the team in scoring, i'd say getting a few more scorers is our only legitimate need. That being said, I do miss seeing fights regularly. However, I'd rather win a cup than watch a bunch of fights (after all I can watch them on youtube).

However that fight didn't have an impact on the score of the game. It did energize the guys, but that 3rd goal was not a goal created by the energy the team had. At the same time, you've got Kyle McLaren running around and playing rough with the players, even injuring Drake in the process. Last years Red Wings would have played a more timid game, giving SJ the opportunity to use their roughness to affect the mental game of the guys on the ice and subsequently win. This year's Wings, however, had Downey tell McLaren to STFU with his fists, sending the message to the SJ bench that they aren't having any of it. Is a guy going to resurrect a 6-1 game through fighting to change the score to 7-6? I doubt it. But in close contests, when the other team is going to resort to cheap tactics to try and get two points, then they gotta be set straight or your star players will worry about it. Grittzkey 1 Report post Posted October 26, 2007 Ill be happy with a player who will crash and bang and contribute on offense when needed. as much as i love fighting. i dont want dead weight or a person who cant contribute to the Offense. My Ideal Player Detroit Redwing, Would be a mix of current players Cleary / Downey / Sammi. a person who will crash/bang/fight/put the puck on a net.

They'll need Downey vs Nashville when the mighty midget Tootoo does his usual skating around looking for a fight routine. The Mclaren fight probably didnt do more for the Wings besides send a message that "we're not tolerating this stuff", but I think that it's good to have someone who will play that enforcer role when teams try to intimidate us with the rough stuff. Opie 308 Report post Posted October 26, 2007 (edited) I agree, it did send a message to McLaren, and others but it did nothing to change or impact the outcome of that game. It may have prevented Z from getting his back hurt, for this game at least, but the game was won by a goalie giving up a bad goal at a very bad time. Between Drake and Downey the wings have shown that some one will exact revenge for a dirty hit. However, that goal was not scored by a star player that McLaren had been chasing and abusing, nor was it even a good shot. Nabakov should have made that save even if he was sleeping on the ice.
