awesome job kenny, now lock up cleary and Z

...how many times do we have to say Zetterberg is not a UFA until 2009? CBA rules state you cannot negotiate until the player is in the final year of his contract, so cannot lock up Z until at least start of 2008-2009 season. But I do agree with ya, as soon as he can, lock him up! IMO he deserves MORE money than Dats...

Nyet. Doesn't matter when the contract is signed, you can't affect the current cap hit on a contract extension.

His new contract and cap hit does not take effect until next season.

Interesting Mack_Attack, as that being the case, i'm curious as to why Holland would move on this now, rather than waiting until next spring.

Not sure where or when i read it, but i thought that with any extension signed before December 31st, the final year of the previous contract became part of the new contract, on a cost average basis.

In that case, any player due for a salary reduction would be extended in the fall, where a player who would be due for a raise (Cleary for example), would be tabled until the new year, as to not impact the current year's cap number.

But if that isn't accurate, maybe what i read was speculation, before the details of the current CBA became known.

$1.58 for a cap hit is about a fair fig.

Aside from Lidsy and Cleary and Quincey and Valterri (and lions and tigers...), there's also the matter of Ozzie. He will be our starter next year. Deal with it, Kenny! :P

Yay!! Great contract length and I'd even go as far as to say it's a bargain even if he's a bit old - he's healthy, doesn't usually have injury problems and he's VERY useful. All in all - I'm very happy...

Don't worry, Datsyuk and Thornton are looking like very good deals at 6.7+ for 7 and 3 (for Thornton, I think) when compared to some of today's salaries, and in 3 years (with rising caps), 1.6 million will be chump change. This is a better deal than Maltby's.

IF Z signs a deal near the Datsyuk number you are looking at this team potentially having two of the top three biggest/sweetest deals in the league.

Thornton at 6.7 is highway robbery, Datsyuk at 6.7 isn't exactly a misdemeanor either, then if Z gets around 7 that again is thievery!!!

I know this won't be a popular thought but we overpaid. I like Drapes but his worth is below $1M/year in my opinion.

Then consider the 200.000 / 300.000 a bonus for being a loyal Red Wing for al those years of dedication and love for the franchise and his teammates.

Guest Hatethedrake!

You know it's nice to see some Red Wings fans be happy over Draper re-signing. For a pay cut no less. Real Red Wings fans understand Draper's value to this team. Same goes for Maltby. There is a reason why the Red Wings are at the top of the league each season with a legit shot to win the Cup. Continuity with players who can play a role and succeed. Draper defines that. The intangibles he brings each game cannot be measured by stats. Just in wins. Stanley Cups. Success. Holland knows that. Draper wants to be here. I am very happy #33 is going to be a Red Wing for likely the rest of his career. I am happy most you guys feel the same way I do. Take a look at Red Wings Central. Those guys are not real Red Wings fans. Talk about stupid. Everyone on there hates that Draper re-signed. Those people give real Red Wings fans a bad name. I thought only Leaf fans could be that dumb but I guess I was wrong. Even Wings fans can be morons. Just none here. So thanks again.

Good deal ... 3 year and im sure he would retire after ... I dont think its really too much that were paying for him ... i think it's perfect .. let's not forget that cap going up ... Lets go Kenny get Lids under contract too ... i hope lids takes like a million or a million and half cut to have a more cap but hey even he doesnt want too ... give the man his money his worth every penny

----> Rafalski for norris ??? :P 6 million a year pretty cheap lool ??? guess anaheim not only team that have 2 norris players that are still capable of being great .... and we still have chelios :D

I don't like draper and we wayyy overpaid for a defensive forward. This will bite Kenny in the nuts down the road. Maybe we'll sign maltby to six year, 8 million contract next....

That's more like it! I thought this thread was getting far too positive. Now I'm sure we're still on LGW.

FWIW, I think the deal was very fair. I can't see how people can spend much time complaining about it other than the fact that that's what we do around here.

Good price for the right term.

Even though he'll be 39 at the end of the contract , only $1.25 will hit the cap that year and he'll probably still be speedier than 75% of the players on our team.

This is a fair concern--it's hard to know how rapidly a player's skills will decline when they get in their upper-30s, especially when they rely a lot on speed, as does Draper.

That being said, I'm really happy to see this deal. And the way the cap has gone up each of the past two seasons, the salary won't be a burden in terms of cap space.

...and yet, it's also very true. :D
