Red Wing fans

These are my thoughts after watching another convincing victory over the Habs last night; how lucky are we, as Red Wing fans? We have just been blessed with a HELL of a team for over a decade, thanks to great coaching, great scouting, and great management... Which other team can boast about their front office like we can?

It is so easy to see that we are spoiled rotten by this team!!! So here's my thanks to the Red Wing organization, in these holidays, for giving us something and someone to cheer for; for giving us something to think and talk about other than gas prices, war, or our crappy day at work

and last but not least, thank you MATT for giving us a place where we can post such messages and share the great memories this team is giving us!

PS: I am not drunk nor high right now, just a really satisfied Wings fan from Montreal :P

I love my Red WIngs too. Awww :hehe:

We're very damned lucky to be Wings fans, rooting for a team that's made the playoffs the past 15 or 16 seasons in a row (I lost count!) and more often than not fielding teams that have good potential to win the Stanley Cup year in and year out, despite what people here might say otherwise because we aren't "tough enough" or the weekly Red Wings goalie rant of the week how goalie #1 sucks because of ABC and goalie #2 sucks because of XYZ.

We are very lucky and unfortuantely a lot of Wings fans overall are spoiled take this team for granted I think in the grand scheme of things, when some franchises can't even make a dent getting into the playoffs or make a deep playoff run year by year.

Extremly fortunate!

I am a former Michigander living in NorCal now and I still follow all my teams. Always been a huge wings fan (obviously) but I love my Detroit Lions.

Talk about two different situations.

One team gives me nothing but heartache and the other makes it so easy.

Got to love the Wings! We owe alot of thanks to the people behind this organization. They've made it super easy to be a wings fan over the years.

Decade schmecade. More like two. Starting work on #3. Guess who won the Norris Division 20 years ago, in 1987-88?

Consider....

The Wings have appeared in the playoffs every year but one since 1987 and are working on a 16-season streak in that regard. That's six more than the #2 and #3 teams and 12 more than #4. This is the longest current streak of any North American team in any sport. No end in sight on that one.

3 Stanley Cups and 4 Finals appearances.

All-time record holder for points in a season.

5 President's Trophies. (No other team has won more than 2.)

13 division titles.

The Wings are the last team to successfully defend the Stanley Cup.

Mr. Hockey is a Red Wing. The Captain is a Red Wing. Just think about those nicknames for a minute and what they mean.

The Wings can claim a worldwide following of fans unmatched by any team in the league. And they have a tradition - Winged Wheel, legendary players, legendary names, the octopus, and 10 Cups - as great as any that can't even be considered by the vast majority of the league.

What this means is.....

[arrogance]

The Red Wings are the premier hockey club in the entire world. Period. And they play, right here, in our own city of Detroit. Not New York, or Toronto, or Paris, London, Moscow or Rome. It's why we are Hockeytown, and the rest of the world is not. Doesn't have anything to do with having 90% capacity instead of 100% at the arena.

[/arrogance]

It's nice to reflect on that every once in a while for some perspective, especially before bitching OMG why aren't the line combos different?

We're lucky to always have a competitive team.... But that's also a curse, because we're usually feeling disappointed and angry at some point in the spring when the Wings lose in the playoffs.

Also, I much prefer some other team's styles of play and a lot of their individual players to what we've got, but it's not like you can just go and change the team you've cheered for all your life.

And I'd like to add to that list the fact that the Winged Wheel is the most recognized sports symbol in the world, according to something I read a while back.

I totally agree with the original post, in fact I blogged about it recently:

http://inultus.livejournal.com/2007/11/01/

Excerpt from my blog:

"Welcome back hockey, and welcome back Redwings, who once again sit at #1 in the entire league with 14% more points than any other team. People in Michigan need to stop taking a #1 team for granted and start watching hockey again. If the Lions were #1 we would be excited as hell, so give the Wings the same appreciation, because they do it with heart."

I'd like to think that's true, but I somehow highly doubt it. The olympic symbol certainly counts as a sports symbol, I really doubt the winged wheel would be anywhere near that. Maybe the most recognizable hockey symbol.

I am also pretty sure that a couple of soccer team logo's may beat the winged wheel!

I'd think the New York Yankees logo would be more recognizable than the Wings logo. And if it's just hockey logos, what about the Canadiens or even Leafs?
