Crosby carried the Pens tonight

There is already a few threads going around about Crosby and especially this Busch league 3rd star... but I agree completely.... I guess it goes: NHL POSTERBOY 2 assists > UMBERGER 3 goals + 2 assists...

No kidding.

Why all the crosby hate?

As I said in the other thread, they almost always try and pick one of the three stars from the losing team. Crosby was the only player on the Pens who had a two-point night.

There's no conspiracy here. Jeez.

we're talking about something as unimportant as being chosen one of the stars for the night. It's not like it's the Hart Trophy or anything.

When your team loses 8-2 and you yourself have a -3... I don't care YOU ARE NOT A STAR! and there are no stars from the other team. I have seen plenty of games where Red Wings are all three stars on a nightly basis...

It should have been Lupul, Umberger and then Richards ... ALL +4 mind you... all +7 away from Sid the Kid.

But he did bring ratings via TV crowd so i guess that is worthy of a star.

I'm gonna say Biron, Laraque, and the Hattrick kids all brought better ratings than the secondary assist king.

Hehe well Crosby brought them into the game... the four you mentioned MADE the people want to keep watching :)

I don't even like Philly or have any ties to them now that Roenick is gone... but i was shocked at seeing the stars last night after seeing the score and the production from the Flyers.... Kinda funny this thread was started as i was feeling the same way seeing it... "WTF, mate???"

I'm disinterested in Crosby. The NHL ruined him for me. Malkin is by far my favorite Penguin.

I wanted to see Briere, who someone on here ranked as the 4th best stickhandler in the league.

I think I'm more shocked that people actually take the time to go see who was voted 3 stars in the building after each game. I doubt most people do that, I think people are simply looking at this game and finding something else about Crosby to ***** about, kinda pathetic if you ask me.

The 3 stars is a stupid, in building thing that no one cares about. What I find silly about it is that when the game goes to a shootout, the guy scoring the deciding goal in the shootout is ALWAYS a star. I may be wrong in the always part, but it certainly seems that way.

Exactly.

Ripping on Crosby for these tiny things, like being named a third star (which he has no control over), is just as bad as the people who praise him for every little thing and make it sound like he scored a highlight reel goal just by farting at the puck.

Actually, that would be a highlight reel goal, but I think the point still stands.

1. Crosby has no control over being named the star other than performing on the ice.

2. The game was 2-0 Philly early and Crosby made a great pass through about 4 people to set up Whitney on the 1st Pens goal. Then he got the secondary assist on the Sykora goal soon after. Let's not forget that the game may have ended 8-2 but early on it was 2-2 and Sid helped get them back into that game at that point.

You act like the people who named him the 3rd star are the same ones who write all the articles about him.

The Pens didn't lose that game because of Sidney Crosby. They were horrible. Their goaltending was atrocious and their down low coverage with embarassing.

Not too mention that late in the game with all the powerplays against, those weren't Sid's fault. He wasn't the one taking bad penalties and putting the Pens in a bigger hole.

I could care less who the 3 stars are for the night. And frankly, unless you have tracked the 3 stars for a period of time across all 30 teams in the league you have absolutely no basis for saying that a minus player with 2 assists should not be a star.

Seriously, you have no idea what, how or who has been chosen as the 3 stars and no basis with which to formulate a rational position on why Sid should've not been named.

My guess is if you looked at the hundreds of games and their 3 stars you would be able to find plenty of examples where a guy had a better night than the next guy on paper but wasn't named a star.

This is just more bitching about Crosby because most people like to ***** and complain. People are whiners by nature.

Of course its not his fault he was chosen a star... I was more discrediting the 3 star selection process. Crosby can't help tha the league gives him free press publicity even when he is a -3 with 2 helpers (meaning he was on the ice for EVERY philly even strength goal... and can only guess right now whether he was on the ice for the Philly PP goals)... that just doesn't sit as a star... Hell Coburn was 1g 1a +3 on the game.... HE DESERVES a star over Sid in this game

Of course it not Sids fault he can do no wrong... its every one promoting the s*** out of him who is at fault.

I agree, I went into exhausting detail in another thread, but the jist of it is that the NHL has T.O.ified Crosby to me, in the fact that I can't look at any hockey news without some mention of Sid the Kid, no matter what he had done. Malkin is the man, great hands, nose for open spots and a big body. Crosby is ruined by overexposure...

I don't blame Crosby for that, and I don't blame him for being chosen as a third star either, the discussion isn't about hating Crosby, I believe its all about how much people are finally tired of hearing about him, no matter what he does. This is just another example, thats all....

Well, you can't please everyone.

Was just a few short years ago hockey fans wanted a star to be promoted, another household name other than Mario or Wayne, who people who didn't even watch hockey have heard of.

Now they have one, and now people are either sick of him, hate hearing about him, think he sucks, overrated, or simply know he's the games top offensive player.

Americans may be sick of him, but in Canada they can't get enough. Three press conferences for each Canadian city the Pens played in this past week. Like they said at the beginning of the Vancouver game, they can't remember the last time fans would line up more on the visiting teams side than the home teams side to watch the team practice a half hour or so before puck drop. He does get a lot of hype. He deserves it though. I saw him play live about six times now, and the guy is just unreal.

Pens fans love hearing about him, obviously, and if a guy like Dats or Zetts was promoted like Sid, everyone here would be happy but fans across the country would complain too. My girlfriend loves Lecavalier, despises Sid because of the press he gets. Like few have said, that's not his fault, he doesn't control the coverage he gets. She thinks Lecavalier should be just as promoted. And she's probably right, he's the best or second best player in the league now, and the same thing would happen. People would think of reasons to hate him too. People bashed Gretzky (I still do), Lindros, and Mario. People will continue to bash Sid.

Far as the game last night, the Pens didn't look good after the 1st period, that's for sure. They did take too many penalties, some of the dumb, and maybe the roap trip wore them out. Also, I think their goaltending was horrible. I'm not saying they would have won with Fleury, but had he been in (and healthy) I think it would have been a much closer game.

The Flyers have their number this year. But the Pens left a bad taste in their mouth. Blowing them out 8-0 last year, Sid scoring 6pts, and the only divional series that one team won all eight games. So after losing eight straight against the Pens last season, Sid picking up about 22pts or so in those eight games, the Flyers come out hungry every game. Biron helps to. That guy is one of the best goalies in the leauge. I wish the Wings woulda traded for him last year. But Ozzy is far better than I expected this season. Hasek, he still scares me sometimes.

I would like to point out that I was not watching the game on television to watch Crosby.

I was watching the game because of Crosby, well, at least at first, after a bit I was just waiting for Laraque to do something awesome (which he kind of did, but not totally).

When have you ever seen Laraque do anything awesome? His gentlemanly behavior on the ice is a disgrace to any enforcer in league history, and got on my nerves long ago. I know nobody on Philly's team could take him, but what's the point of having this guy on your team on a night where you have 4 fights, and he's not even one of the people fighting.

You said it, he's "gentlemanly on the ice" and yet no one can take him, I think that's awesome.

its kinda sad...if you think about it...he's not going to be able to carry this team for the whole season...the pressure is going to get to him at some point or another...and what if god for bid it...but what if he gets hurt who's going to be there to pick up the slack??

I'm not hating on Crosby. I just question the person who selected the three stars. The headline I wrote was to make fun of the media and all the Crosby articles they write. Looking at it again I should've wrote "Crosby-led Penquins fall to Flyers 8-2." The kid is under a tremendous amount of pressure and kudos to him for handling it so well.

He carried the load last year, im sure he can do it again. He played hurt last year and did well. And I would go with Malkin

Sometimes it is actually pretty awesome the way he controls the puck down low and he does throw heavy hits every now and then. There was a hit 2 games ago where he just leaned into someone on the boards and squished him. I'm not sure if that guy played the rest of the game or not.

In terms of the Philly game, believe me, he would have loved to fight, but their whole team is afraid of him. You can't fight if you don't have a willing partner. Eager throw a nice elbow into Laraque when Laraque had his head down, not looking. I didn't catch what Larque did, but he obviously wanted to fight (got a 4 min roughing penalty). Eager had none of that and chose to fight Roberts instead and proceeded to get his ass whooped by Roberts. He didn't play for the rest of the game.
