Hiei 192 Report post Posted December 17, 2007 http://www.thestar.com/News/article/285910 In an interview from Russia, Medvedev confirmed that former Russian NHL star Igor Larionov and Goodenow are members of a so-called "working group" that's starting the league. Goodenow travelled to Moscow this week to discuss the prospective league, Larionov said. anyone see anything coming from this?

Hiei 192 Report post Posted December 17, 2007 Why shouldn't a country like Europe have its own NHL? I think it'd be wonderful, except when you'd have London/Berlin or Berlin/Moscow....Dunno how big the REAL big arenas are over there. In the article, it says the one in Helsinki is the largest in Finland at 13,400 Capacity.

Yzerfan1999 81 Report post Posted December 17, 2007 (edited) where did our education system go wrong Hahah. Well, in all fairness with EU expansion and the Shengen Agreement, Europe practically is a country. EDIT - as for the thread question - I think it could work given time. It would suck to see all of the great European players NOT come over to the NHL, but like they were saying on HNIC on Saturday night, the NHL wouldn't mind expanding globally anyways. Maybe the two leagues will eventually merge ala NHL/WHA? Edited December 17, 2007 by Yzerfan1999
NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted December 17, 2007 Why shouldn't a country like Europe have its own NHL? What's to stop Chris Chelios from heading up this new European NHL? Sorry, for some reason your question reminded me of dear old Sirdrake. Where is that goofy bastard?
Wings_Dynasty 267 Report post Posted December 17, 2007 So there will be a NHL League (Americans and Canadians) and a EHL (Euros and Russians). Then there will eventaully be a Champion vs. Champion game, where the Euros will be thoroughly destroyed physically, but win the game 13-2.
VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted December 17, 2007 This is good. I'm sure some Euros would stay in the NHL, and Canada and America have more than enough good players to beat the EuroLeague.

WingNutt 12 Report post Posted December 17, 2007 Not a bad idea, although what would happen to the RSL ? and other Elite European leagues? either them or the new (europe) would fold. I think it would be great for the people of Europe but bad for all of us, all the talent would stay over their and we would never get to see guys like Datsyuk, Ovechkin, Selanne, Zetterberg. the list would go on and on. Although not fair to Europeans to never see them either, along with guys from this side of the planet. Crosby, Yzerman, Lemiuex, etc etc. If Igor is supporting this then I will support it, he has done a lot of good for the sport and is a class act, great caring person. and if anyone can make this happen, Larinov can
Izzy24 44 Report post Posted December 17, 2007 What's to stop Chris Chelios from heading up this new European NHL? Nothing, I suppose. Do you think he would put a team in Greece?
lfd250 1 Report post Posted December 17, 2007 Well, I suppose it was bound to happen, however do they have the money to compete with the country of "North America"? Granted the Euro is doing better. Stay tunned.
Stu in Israel 0 Report post Posted December 17, 2007 H. L. Mencken, an American intellectual of the early 20th century, once said, "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public," and in our own time, Gore Vidal once said (similarly), "Never underestimate the ignorance of the American electorate." However, regarding the topic itself, I tend to agree with Wing_Nutt that an "NHL Europe" would probably mean a major cut-off of Europeam talent to North America. Each country could be like a "Division" within the league. So the RSL would remain in tact as would the SEL and FEL. I actually love this idea as it would keep idiots like Yashin out of the NHL. I don't want anyone in the best league in the world who cares about $$$ only. Let them play 44 games in the new EHL and make all the rubles their heart desires. The NHL will always be a great product to watch even if a handful of the worlds best aren't playing in it. Edited December 17, 2007 by Hank

mooose kiiisses 0 Report post Posted December 19, 2007 (edited) PLEASE DEAR GOD LET THE NICE EUROPEANS TAKE BETTEMAN SO THE NHL CAN BE RUN BY CHELI OR HULL AMEN NOBODY will even come close to touching him with a 30 foot pole. And I for one don't want Europe to have him either. That would be lasting damage on them and us. On second thought, he would destroy hockey around the world..
