Darren McCarty Progress Thread

I just listened to an  interview with Babs on WBBL1340am and he said the Wings will offer Darren McCarty a contract. It will be up to Darren to earn a spot. He said Darren still needs to get into shape and loose some weight and get up to NHL speed. It's all up to Darren.

First off, link to a real website saying Ellis got wavied.

I am not convinced he did.

Unconfirmed.....

I will tell you my sources tell me that Detroit has a one year deal on the table for McCarty right now. His agent is discussing adding incentives to this minimum contract.

Holland hopes to have him on the plane and playing Saturday.

The following is an article I found on NHL.com. Sounds like D Mac is really making an impression with Holland.

Tough guy Darren McCarty close to a comeback with Detroit Red Wings Canadian Press Feb 20, 2008, 3:31 PM EST DETROIT - Darren McCarty is close to joining the Detroit Red Wings again.

General manager Ken Holland said Wednesday the team is "leaning toward offering him a contract."

McCarty played in Detroit from 1993 through 2004. He has been productive in comeback stints with the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins and the International Hockey League's Flint Generals.

He was scoreless in 32 games last season, his second with the Calgary Flames.

McCarty was a fan favourite in Detroit, where the physical forward helped the Red Wings win three Stanley Cups in 1997, 1998 and 2002.

Awesome thread, ICEMUNKEE! 17,000 views, and he's this close to signing. What a ride. C'mon Mac!

Thanks T.Low. To think we just started his watch barely two months ago. Way to be Mac. There is still a ton of doubters and non believers, 97.1 for example has been saying it is a charity case and only to fill seats. I don't believe that, I believe he has a little to offer. GO MAC!!!!

Great story on MAC's comeback during the 2nd Intermission of the Pens/Sens game on CBC. It seemed pretty recent cause it had footage of the hat trick and also a short interview with MAC at the end. GOD PLEASE get him to our playoff 4th line!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hopefully it'll show up on youtube or something.

Cheers to DMAC!!

MLIVE:

General manager Ken Holland said he has made a contract offer to Darren McCarty. It's for the league minimum for the rest of the season (about $100,000, prorated). McCarty has not accepted yet. There's no reason to believe he won't accept it, though. Once he's signed, he'll remain in Grand Rapids on a two-week conditioning stint.

McCarty WILL join the Wings a week from Monday!

"There seems to be some misinformation floating around about Darren McCarty's status, so I asked Wings general manager Ken Holland to clarify. This is what Holland told me: McCarty will join the Red Wings a week from Monday, after his two-week conditioning stint in Grand Rapids is done. And he will remain with the Wings through the end of the playoffs. Holland said there is absolutely no chance that McCarty will remain in Grand Rapids past the conditioning stint because he can't be waived. The deadline for putting a player on waivers, Holland said, was last Monday, prior to the NHL trade deadline. So even though McCarty was listed on the Griffins' 22-man Clear Day roster, he's not eligible to play for Grand Rapids in the playoffs. " Mlive

'McCarty Can Help the Wings' -- Michael Zuidema

http://blog.mlive.com/fivehole/2008/02/mcc...uggling_re.html

"I think he definitely can (help the Red Wings)," Zuidema said. "The Wings' big question mark people have brought up is toughness and I don't think there's any doubt Darren can bring that up."

"And bringing in a guy with three Stanley Cup championships can only help you out. If he can bring some secondary scoring, which the Red Wings have been desperate for, that'd be just a bigger bonus."

just sayin'

as much as i like hearing dmac is back and gonna be with the wings. i hate 1 thing.

less or maybe even no downey..

Lets be realistic, as much as I love Downey's toughness and fighting, he's pretty useless otherwise. I mean, we all know he's not here to score but he doesn't even generate offense occasionally. C'mon, 0 goals, 2 assists in 45 games. Meanwhile McCarty has come back strong in Grand Rapids, 5 goals, 5 assists in 13 games. McCarty has a habit of scoring big goals at big times in the playoffs, even if he'll only score a few total. I know McCarty is not as good as he was 10 years ago, but its a virtual guarantee that he will produce more than Downey and be comparably tough. Plus, as a bonus, he'll put more fans in JLA which will help our home ice advantage.

If anyone here thinks Mac is going to supply the Wings with secondary scoring, im sorry, he wont. He's just going to instill some energy into this team and bring another dimension of play, along with butts in the seats at the joe.
