Sergei Fedorov91 24 Report post Posted February 18, 2008 Because he's 35 years old, which is almost too old but still young enough to take this seriously, I say the man deserves a shot. Maybe we wouldn't be sitting with 3 cups in last decade or so if he didn't tell the NHL we weren't going to be questioned at the heart anymore by pounding claude lemieux's face in. I think I heard somewhere where Mitch Albom wrote he shouldn't have to pay for a meal in detroit for the rest of his live. He should at least be given a shot. Grittzkey 1 Report post Posted February 18, 2008 I liked Drake last game. Seemed to bring a more physical presence, especially compared to some of the other Wings. Drake has played solid all year, Just hasnt been throwing the infamous cheap shots nearly as much as i was hoping. Hopefully we can see him get back to his ole GunHoo style of play soon.. Game against Dallas was a good site, When he is with Malts/Downey all 3 of them seem to just crash and bang like its nobodies bussiness.. and i love it. Drake has stepped up his game big time the 2nd half of the season. he's even getting scoring chances. i really like him on this team. he always seems to be throwing his body, obviously isnt afraid to drop the gloves and take on anybody - will stick up for his teammates - and i absolutely love seeing that. i think the Pain Train did that either earlier this year or last year (probably both) and he gained a lot of respect because of that. Inultus 12 Report post Posted February 19, 2008 This might have been posted earlier in the thread, but the recent Griffin's game article, the picture and caption is priceless: http://griffinshockey.com/newsstats/releas...?article_id=990 "Darren McCarty separates Alex Henry from his tooth during a second-period brawl." Holy crap I'm going to have a seizure from the terrible camerawork on the game highlights. Anyway, McCarty has 5 points in 5 games, which is a better ratio than anyone else on the team! That's great news.

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted February 20, 2008 nice job dmac, 7pts in 6 games =D Yeah, I don't know how being the best player on the Griffins means he's not ready for the NHL. I understand he needs to continue his conditioning, but it seems to me he's a step ahead of any other Griffin not named Howard or Quincey.
puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted February 20, 2008 I don't know if adding Mac will bring us a Cup... but I do think he would contribute more than Drake (sorry...) and he does know how to win. He would bring the desire and show the young ones how it's done. He could be Downey's sidekick -- assistant *** kicker? What a story, if he make it back this season and the Wings win it all. I love a good hockey story.
Viperar 16 Report post Posted February 20, 2008 I completely agree Loo, I would much rather see D-mac getting a chance to do what Drake has already had half a season's chance to do, and still hasn't done it.

wingsfan75 2 Report post Posted February 20, 2008 Not to mention that Mac has some of the biggest playoff goals in Wings history. He usually takes his game to another level for the playoffs.

Really i see no reason against it, and neither does Holland apperently. I understand everyone is coming around to Downey more and more, and I give props to those who supported him from the start I like the guy as much as the next, but lets be realistic. Downey is NOT a better hockey player than Mac, I don't care how old mac is now, the fact he's "had his chance" with the Wings and all of that jibber jabber he's simply a better all around player. And that's TODAY, not "the mac of 5 years ago...blah,blah,blah". Another month of conditioning is exactly what Mac needs, with the Wings or G.R., and than i don't see how you could possibly want Downey in a 4th line roll in the playoffs over Mac. Hell, I don't even care if Mac puts on a Wings jersey this year (would love it though) as long as he shows enough to EARN a contract from the Wings, which apperently he has, that's huge and a true sign he's back and turned his life around for the better. Looks like I might get to say "welcome home Mac!"

Looks like I might get to say "welcome home Mac!" You can't scratch Downey for McCarty. He's earned his spot on this team, especially after the Colorado game. He's also one of the most popular guys in the dressing room. I like McCarty and I want him back on the Wings, but I'd much rather see BOTH McCarty and Downey in the lineup compared to Ellis/Kopecky. Believe it or not, I'd take McCarty and Downey over Drake too, despite he recent grittier play. Am I wrong here?

Believe it or not, I'd take McCarty and Downey over Drake too, despite he recent grittier play. Am I wrong here? Lets face it, Downey hardly sees the ice past the 10:00 mark of the second period now, what do you think it's going to be like in the playoffs? Yes I agree, Downey has earned his roster spot, as has Ellis and Meech have. I don't see a whole lot of ice time for them in the playoffs either. Kopecky has been playing well lately, but I don't see him getting more than 8 mins max in the playoffs, besides, IMO he's not going to be here past the 26th. As much as i like the guy, no ones going to want Hudler, up front they'll ask for Flip (can't move him unless it's for Hossa IMO), or Kopecky possibly Ellis as a throw in. I have no problem if the Wings pull a big tough team in the playoffs having both Downey and Mac in the line up. That's the point though, you should be able to be flexable and have a few different looks you can throw at the other team. And i'm not knocking Downey in any way, I like the guy and get excited everytime he's on the ice cause you don't know what might happen, but in the playoffs i just think your going to have to have something else to offer. mac has the basic hockey skills downey lacks, no matter how many people think they know he doesn't cause he's now "old". Alot of all of this depends on other trades, and who does or doesn't leave the team thorugh a trade. Something else to think about what if Downey gets hurt, who's going to fill that roll? I guess i'm trying to say you have to sign this guy to a contract no matter what, the 23 man roster expands, and if he can get his conditioning up (no doubt he can, it's actualy one of the easier things to improve in your game) it's really a no brainer. shannyfan1414 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2008 What a great story this is. I'm so happy that he has really rededicated himself to coming back and playing in the NHL. redwing_sparty 0 Report post Posted February 20, 2008 this should be a great pick up for us. he should come very cheap, so we can still make some good moves at the deadline. He has more to play for than drake does so I think he will give a better effort. They ought to bring him up as soon as the sign him, and put him in the game against edmonton. Then they can really evaluate what they need to work with him on to make sure he's ready for a playoff run. Remember the hat-trick in game one against colorado in 02? sweeeeeet!
